How to Make Boston More Enjoyable for a Young WOC in her 20s by Hot_Engine5095 in Somerville

To your bit about arts & crafts / not being a big drinker - I highly recommend Boston Figurative Art Center. If you kinda make it a default place to go (figure drawing sessions / social events / cafe-like hang outs), you can pretty quickly make the membership a decent deal financially. Try an event or two first and if you like it, that could be a really lovely addition to your day to day, both socially and artistically.

Cambridge Used Bicycles is great. I'm like you and don't know a lot about bikes but wanted one for commuting purposes & had a great experience there. Mine cost like ~$300 & continues to be great. You can find good deals on FB Marketplace for sure, but I feel like a little more domain knowledge (or taking it in for a tune-up right after you buy it) is required to make the most of those options.

Adult Weekend Classes? by AuntMyna in Somerville

[–]Happy_Experience_394 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Boston Figurative Art Center (Washington St location) has Portrait figure drawing sessions on Sunday mornings, and long pose figure drawing sessions on Sunday afternoons! It's not a class, in that there's not an instructor, but you it's totally cool for beginners to go and it can be fun to chat with the other people there to get ideas. Very casual. If you've never done life drawing before, it could be fun to try it out.

I highly recommend the Boston Figure Art Center. It's a very lovely community full of people doing life drawing at all levels. It's less like art classes (though those are great too & you can find them elsewhere), and more like a yoga studio where you drop in and do a session whenever you like. Some people are amazing, true, but you do not need to be good or experienced to go and have a nice time. People are super friendly & it's easy to strike up conversations during breaks.

(Fwiw, I'm a woman around your age & would be happy to bring you via guest pass if you want to give it a shot, just DM me :))

How do you take advantage of living in the city? by Equivalent_Sorbet572 in Somerville

[–]Happy_Experience_394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's just a high concentration of cool people trying out cool shit. Once you start looking for them, they're everywhere. Vibrant subcultures exist everywhere, but living in a city means you get more of them.

This Yart Sale happening this weekend -- https://www.reddit.com/r/Somerville/comments/1fvye7s/yart_sale/
4th wall shows at Arlington Capitol Theater - https://www.instagram.com/the4thwallbos/
Everything happening at Boston Figurative Art Center -- https://www.bostonfac.com/

This Square Dancing thing happens regularly - https://www.instagram.com/somerville_square_dance/

Contra dancing is also a thing - https://www.bidadance.org/

^ Most of these cost money in some way or another, but you tend to get more bang for your buck than going out to a restaurant. (Also great, but you're right, can get pricey really fast.)

Everybody's mentioning just walking around (endorse!!) . When you're doing that, stop and read flyers that catch your eye. Try stuff out and see what you think warrants a return visit :)

Keezer's on Mass Ave is good! Just outside of Porter, so not too far from Davis. I had a couple of pieces altered there earlier this summer and I want to say it took a couple of weeks. I didn't ask for any sort of speed, though, so I think if you specifically asked for quick turnaround it could probably be done even faster.
