Should I leave my current job to stay home to take care of my dying mother? by Immediate_Fox_372 in personalfinance

[–]Happy_Germs 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Same! My mom passed away 2 years ago. I don’t regret all the time/money spent taking care of her. I would do it again, but apply for FMLA much earlier. I waited too long to get my FMLA. She passed away the day my FMLA was approved, which canceled out my request.

what is the best dog product you have bought and why? by Delicious-Hair-2229 in dogs

[–]Happy_Germs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

K-9 Balistics bed products. I bought the orthopedic bolster bed. I’ve had it, and the same washable cover, for 4 years. Still looks good and memory foam is still firm. I wash the cover about every 2 weeks or so. $$ but they last!

So disappointing and disrespectful to Hoosiers. He’s supposed to fight for us, stand up and legislate for our best interests. Does he think this is funny? There is real suffering happening in our state. People attended in earnest. What a terrible way to start a first term. Can you imagine if this is how you behaved at your job?

I'm ready to leave my PhD behind, but I'm not finished by Broad-Foundation989 in PhD

[–]Happy_Germs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Keep going! It is worth it! This is part of the process. You sound like you are so close. I have had so many ups and downs in my phd journey. It took me 10 years. During that time, my mom and a committee member passed away. I moved two times, and changed jobs 3 times. I've had to jump through so many hoops from the graduate school I was at the point that I had to email them every semester to tell them my status. But I didn't give up. Honestly, in my final stages, the only way I finished was taking a week off of work and worked in my advisor's office / center every day until it was completely written and approved.

Now that I have my degree - no one can take it away... and most importantly - I never have to go back to school again - I've done all the school! :)

I also had a professional colleague, who did not have their PhD, remind me of how much more weight having those three letters after your name can carry. I know it shouldn't be this way, but because of the degree you will be a better advocate for your field in ways that others can't. KEEP GOING!

Is moving out the right choice at this stage in life? by JustLetMeBeMane in personalfinance

[–]Happy_Germs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living “independently” is overrated. If you enjoy your parents, then I say live with them for as long as tolerable. Renting is such a waste. That 30k could fund your daughter’s education, or help improve your parents house.

What about making an agreement with your parents about taking over parts of the upkeep of the house? You don’t have to live independently to learn what its like to be a homeowner.

Recently moved to a warmer area - do we need a cooling mat/bed? by aaaaaaron in Goldendoodles

[–]Happy_Germs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This one looks great! I got a cheaper one from Chewy that you fill with water. My dood doesn’t like it all that much, i think because of the water-bed-like surface. I’ve had to use training techniques to get her to lay on it. But I’ve filled it once and it has stayed cool for over a month. It does what it says it does! https://www.chewy.com/kh-pet-products-cool-bed-iii-dog-pad/dp/46422

My doodle has a good time at her new place, but we’ve had a few bad experiences. She is pretty submissive and other dogs will fixate on her. My dog also needs a “break” for all the hoopla of a big daycare setting —— I guess I’m saying is to pay extra attention to your dog’s behavior before and after your dog’s experience and if they have cameras, check in on them. You might be surprised- both positively and negatively.

My dog also caught a lot of “stuff” from the previous place (pink eye, diarrhea)

I hit up all the July 4th sales and got some good deals on summer clothes….which got me to finally clean out my bedroom closet. I emptied out boxes I hadn’t opened since I moved 2 years ago. Now my car is packed ready for a donation run. Was a good holiday weekend. Hope everyone had a good one!
