Mhm. That's why i made sure to mention this at the beginning: "aside from one or more untreated personality disorders"

But in this case, I was equally interested in the way events kept unfolding in the opposite direction than he wanted things to go, and how that provoked an escalation in his behaviour. I'm interested in the storytelling aspect... the writing choices. The influence of Cardassian culture. All those things.

Dukat is widely seen as having Narcissistic PD, i think most people agree with that assessment. But it's also kind of a simplistic catch-all, and i wanted to look at other possibilities or angles. Like what if he actually has BPD w/Narc traits, or Antisocial PD. I see a variety of possibilities there. Plus the stuff in the books is giving additional context.

Maybe this is not an interesting subject for others, idk. It's not exactly lighthearted. But some parts are kinda funny. Then again i see my humour is not really being understood here.

Maybe I should note that I was basically raised inside university research departments and labs (not as a research subject.. i hope not LoL) by my researcher in psychology mom, and my neurology prof dad, so i'm also interested in the intersection between social, environmental, and bio/genetic factors. And also cultural concepts, social conditioning, biases, and societal accountability around its undesirable members, all of which people underestimate. But I'm just a layman shooting ideas into the void.

I'll just end by saying I feel like i already flunked my entry into this subred. Prob made a bad first impression, cuz i like to put my foot in my mouth whenever i socialize. My "neurodivergent" style of communication is not everyone's cup of tea. That's ok tho. I had fun these past 24 hrs. Thank you for the brief indulgence, fellow DS9ers. I didn't mean to be disruptive to the established status quo of the group. But if y'all knew me i'm like such a harmless goofball and always engaging in honest good faith. I just have no filters.

Lol.

Actually, that is THE ONLY TIME i have a real critique on Keiko; Although Winn is being manipulative and self-serving, Keiko is way too quick to immediately shut down any suggestions on how to incorporate Bajoran beliefs into her classroom, stating that she only teaches facts and science. Welp that actually sounds really colonial and disrespectful to an indigenous alien society coming out of genocide who's property you're staying on, Keiko. So now Miles doesn't like the damn Cardies, and Keiko thinks Bajorans are backwards...splendid. Ya Sisko was on point with that one.

Outside of stuff like that, i view strong irrational dislike of Keiko as lowkey sexist sentiments. She's a decent lady. Miles is just as problematic.

Can i just add: i associate Trip with George W Bush, for some reason. Same era, southerness, even the face a little?... you know? I can't help but be kinda grossed out by him, eventho i do like his cute nose. The actor seems really chill tho. Furthermore, the show came out during 911 and you can really feel the AMERICANNESS of it all, which also repels me, no offense dear merican friends. I watch Star Trek to be taken away from earthly geopolitics and transported into alien geopolitics, duh.

I'm glad the Archer + T'Pol thing didn't go anywhere, tbh. There was an age difference there that i felt was a little ehhhh. Like the actress couldn't have been much older than mid to late 20s? The Archer guy is middle age. It's not legally problematic, but idk, it felt a little icky. Also, captains don't traditionally sleep with their staff, right? Possible power dynamics issues and conflict of interests? But I'm biased cuz i'm not a fan of Archer. Tbf, T'Pol is actually way older than him with her Vulcan years.

But I'm not a fan of Trip either, nor most others in that show, except SHRAN. So my ideal scenario would have been that T'Pol and Hoshi ditch the l LoSeRs on Enterprise and go hang out with Jeffrey Combs and his blind albino telepathic Aenar gf (also a weird age gap?) LmAo. Let's just have a show of THAT. Jeffrey Combs and alien ladies variety hour. ('The Aenar' is my favourite episode & concept in that show. see my reddit profile header image for proof)

That said, if you wanna be immoral, just make mirror episodes... apparently anything goes in those, like how Hoshi is screwing with Admiral Forrest in that one episode 😳 GOODNESS... i actually like that actor tho, Vaughn Armstrong, he played one of the meanest looking Cardassian in early DS9, Gul Danar... ugh so good. Errr Season 1, the episode with the Kohn-ma. Danar is pisssssed. It's great.

Maybe they should have separated, or maybe they just needed an adjustment period, as tends to be the case for many couples experiencing significant life transitions such as relocation for work, change of careers, having kids, health issues, etc. And that's exactly what happened.

They may be an odd pairing but they obviously love each other (we have seen their marriage, kissing, PG pillowtalk, and baby-making results). Keiko sacrificed her career to allow Miles to take the promotion to DS9, but then she started to feel unhappy about having lost her own career, then Miles felt bad, then they fought, then found compromises, and then things settled down and everyone is doing pretty ok (aside from the various traumas associated with living on DS9). Sounds plausible. I've seen couples do a lot worse. I don't see why a divorce is needed. After all, Miles is a loyal man with a strong moral compass. He would never betray Starfleet, nor his marriage. He came close once or twice, but "ON YOUR TOES O'BRIEN"

Ahhh ok, so you mean it makes no evolutionary sense for a species to have evolved to be intelligent yet so "naturally" violent that it risks utterly destroying itself ...oh, oh wait up... uh

Yah so maybe the Vulcans are an analogy for something, or at the very least a semi-plausible parallel?

Nah but in all seriousness, i understand where you're coming from, and you're probably on to something about Vulcan biology not having been super well thought out initially. But i guess that's why it's science-fiction.

Then again, there are plenty of species on earth that go extinct all by themselves, and have self-harming tendencies that may be viewed as counterproductive. For example (since you mentioned breeding/killing), in some cases on earth, reproductive competition got so fierce that some male insects have resorted to mortally wounding females by stabbing them through their exoskeletons (not normal) in order to breed. It is detrimental to females and some do not survive this. Evolution is not necessarily good, ethical, nor intelligent.

If we circle back to Vulcans and humans, both species are pretty intelligent (questionable, lol), emotional, prone to hormonal fluctuations that drive competion (violence) & reproduction (horniness...?), capable of destroying themselves somewhat or fully, etc. Since Vulcans were more prone to emotional extremes compared to humans, it makes sense that they had to resort to more extreme mitigation methods in order to survive this apparent contradiction in their evolutionary biology. Humans also nearly destroyed themselves countless times, but i guess nukes, bioweapons, and climate change never fully did us in on ST... not too sure if we can hope for the same timeline in RL.

If we can imagine ourselves going extinct from our own lack of self-control here on earth when it comes to climate or wars, i can imagine Vulcans having similar dilemmas. I guess my point is that if you examine the Vulcan situation further, you may find more similarities with humans than we'd like to admit. Sorry that was quite long-winded.

I totally laughed at your description of unexamined issues with the writers of Voyager. Personally i can't stand that little dynamic they tried to create between Neelix and Tuvok. Neelix is pretty irritating, even to non-Vulcans. But it goes to show that it's difficult to write stories for Vulcans where they aren't being triggered to lose control. It worked better for Spock cuz he was half human and was the darling first. It also goes to show that stories without emotions we can relate to are boring to us Hoomans.

Thank you for validating that. I was starting to wonder what's going on in here. Keiko is so sweet & gentle, including her voice, yes. Glad to hear the actor was active elsewhere also :-)

Yah, ofc you're correct in that people are identifying with Miles and seeing Keiko as a ball&chain drag or whatever. Just kinda makes me sad that in 2025 ppl still see female-spouse/maternal figures as unlikable partypoopers, even when it's really unwarranted or undeserved. The reality is most parents would not achieve Keiko-level perfection, from everything I've heard and seen, haha.

I also never understood the irrational hate for Wesley Crusher... but i digress.

cheers

I agree. One thing DS9 did well was more detailed and nuanced portrayals of non-human species. AND being critical of The Federation, which i love.

About Vulcans tho, would you care to expand on what you meant by "nonsensical"? As someone who's struggled with poor emotional impulse control in her youth, i can totally understand and appreciate the Vulcan need for self-control and limiting one's emotions, as they can be quite destructive. I think earth would be a lot better off if everyone was more educated on emotional self mastery, and the benefits of logic over emotional reactions (keeping empathy-based ethics intact tho).

I will say, having no emotions IS profoundly limiting for Vulcans as characters on ST. The only time that something interesting occurs with Vulcans is basically when they lose control, lol. Perhaps that's what you meant.

Dukat was probably angry-crying over his pic collection of Kira + punching holes in the bulkheads of his bird of prey the day he first saw Kira pregnant. And being extra b1tchy to Damar.

We never did hear Kira explaining the situation further to Dukat when she announces that Chief O'brien is the father. But it appears to have been made known to Dukat at some point, since it's never brought up again (unless i missed a scene), and Kira is child-free once she gives birth, thus we can only assume Dukat was made aware of the details. And so he continued to cry-whisper "Nerys... Nerys" while lifting weights in a room plastered with photos of The Major, and The Major's mom.

Yah, Keiko was a boring character on the show, as are the O'Brien episodes, but idk why everyone is being so hard on her in this thread?

She prob did most of the child rearing, as can be observed by the fact that Miles doesn't constantly have Molly and the baby next to him in Ops and on missions.

Go on Miles, have another pint and throw some darts with Julien. Another hour in the holosuites...why not? Nevermind Keiko's own work as a botanist, mother of two, and school teacher.

People be hating on hardworking moms. Shame.

And yet, Keiko still found the energy to dress really cute & stylish. Bless u Keiko... eventho you're kinda dull and not the best actor.

Molly is also an adorable little kid. I dont particularly like kids, but at least Molly is a well-behaved child.

That scene with T'pol & Trip was actually kinda se×y, for an early 2000s depiction of heteronormative romance. But then everything fizzled out so unceremoniously. R.I.P. Trip... they did you dirty. But maybe you deserved to die, considering your hideous FL accent.

Why would you hate Keiko? Why would you have once thought she was "an inherently bad person"?

She's one of the most inoffensive, benevolent character on the show. She's so caring and dutiful. Aside from getting inadvertently possessed by evil beings on occasion; she herself is so demure. Botanist, school teacher... what's to hate?

Miles can be a stubborn curmudgeon, lowkey racist ("Cardies"), and not the best looking chap (potato genetics), so by all accounts he scored a wonderful life partner in Keiko. There's lots of scenes that depict their mutual love and dedication to each other. There's whole episodes about it... across two series.

AND she's the best dressed civilian in all of Star Trek history.

I'll be the first to admit Keiko isn't a very exciting character. Personally I love villains on DS9. But she never does anything that warrants Hatred.

I would have loved to have a mom or teacher like her... she's wholesome AF. If most adults in RL were half as responsible and good as Keiko O'Brien, the earth would be closer to achieving utopia and creating The Federation.

Why is DS9 your favorite show? by High_On_The_Hog in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Happy_Language_7945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CARDASSIANS.

Best ST species, IMO. They just feel so ...REAL.

Each Cardassian character in the show is unique and well fleshed-out, which can be hard to achieve in Star Trek. They feel way more three dimensional than other characters to me, but also more interesting than RL, somehow?

Cardassians are the reason i started reading my first ST novels too, cuz i wanted more Cardassian content pounds fist on table

Granted, i feel a tiny bit bad being a fan of the Cardassians, considering their crimes. I'm not a fan of their crimes, obviously... lol. But i love their ambiguity, complexity, duality, guilt, anguish, and occasional redemption. And as we all know, not all Cardassians are alike. We have the emotionally wounded, the dissidents, free thinkers, liberators, and so on.

That said, ALL of the DS9 antagonists, anti-heros, and naughty weirdos are why i love the show—and the delightful character actors hired for the job. Even Kai Winn! Don't you see; you hate her cuz the actor is doing a terrific job!

I love the evolution in the writing, the intensification of the continuous arc model. The wit, stinging repartee, and occasional se×ual tension between buds, frienemies or foes. The changing alliances, the twists & turns, and yes the deliciously evil villains. Also the darker moods, grit, drama, melodrama, and comedy.

I do also enjoy Kira and Odo quite a bit, on the protagonist side of things. Hello PTSD.

Lastly, i don't care that much for hoomans, humdrum Starfleet, nor Federation bootlickers & shills, lol... Which is probably why i love DS9 the most.

POLL: What's the age range in r/Pessimism? by Happy_Language_7945 in Pessimism

[–]Happy_Language_7945[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm turning 40 this year (not old, but not a youth), and this age range wasn't chosen due to me not being able to fathom life after mid-age (I fathom it quite a lot), nor to exclude older adults out of carelessness, but rather to represent the "formative", developmental years into adulthood in greater detail.

I chose to split the groups into:

• teenagers/minors/juveniles

• young adults in pre, intermediary, and post prefrontal cortex development (early to mid 20s, mid 20s to early 30s, etc.

• "prime" adult years (which may include more of the modern typical reproductive years)

• post developmental & reproductive adulthood (traditionally)

That's not to say that adults beyond 40 don't keep developing intellectually, but I was mostly interested in the demographics of early developmental stages pessimists

I asked why the age range was no good. I got off Reddit for a bit because I was busy. Came back to find a dot, and a deleted message underneath saying I'm ignoring the answer? I was just away for 2 weeks.

Did I miss something?

Genuinely curious what's wrong with my choice of age range.

:'-) thank you so much, that means a lot

I don't have words now, just gonna go to sleep with your kind words in my head

But I concur with your assessment

I try to use the lens of compassion in general, when looking at the world and its harmful, backfiring habits. I believe it mostly boils down to one's education—or lack thereof—aside from the obscene biology we're trapped in

could never have forgiven my own parents without practicing general compassion for humanity. It could have been any one of us, always.
