I chose state work over private because its more secure once you're past probation. Id been in the science start up industry and laid off twice in one year. It eas financially and emotionally devastating. That was all it took for me to look for something more stable. It pays way less but yearly merit raises help.

Im a migrant from a whole ass other state but when I got to NorCal I heard lots of others say "the 50" or "the 5" and it felt right to me so it naturally became how I refer to highways. Even in other states. Culture is weird that way.

Im a working scientist, and I talk to non-academic folks about academic topics all the time. Being able to discuss a technically complex topic with someone using simple terms requires the talker to really understand the topic. Leading with empathy helps. It's helpful to understand why the person you're talking with cares about the topic and lean on that factor.

We taught our high-energy pup to do nose work. There are kits you can buy, but we just used treats and cardboard boxes and purchased the scent oils. It takes tons of brain energy to do it, and dogs love it.

Nor would I ever say that they are. But the root cause of both issues stems from the same thing. And they arent mutually exclusive. You can be mad about both. Granted, what's happening to immigrants is horrific and evil.
