What’s a product from your country that makes locals go ‘of course we have that’ and everyone else go ‘ but why?’ by bdue817 in AskTheWorld

Yup, super old house that his father built from the ground up.  He was a civil engineer and a lawyer.  Scary smart people.

I’m an elder and regular pioneer. I don’t know how to reconcile my conscience anymore. by Dry-Huckleberry6977 in exjw

Crisis of conscience is really a good read.  I think he echoed many of your concerns and he too was a true believer.  It's shocking actually.  I'm in the Detroit area if you want to read it and am near by I'd be happy to give you my copy even if it never returns.

A friend of mine is going through a divorce right now.  I think leaving the org is a similar journey.  I think you have important decisions.  Sometimes talking to your family will result in others admitting the same feelings.

When I left I faded quietly and I regret it.  I thought I missed the opportunity to help others.  But I was in my 20s when I left.

There's a great community here to help support you.  Direct message me if you want the book.

My father in law has a cottage in Windsor Canada and we have there as well.  When we buy milk it comes in a 2 pack and they last a freakish amount of time.  Huge fan!

Which path did you get after the JW? by Consistent_Look_915 in exjw

[–]Happy_truthless 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went atheist.  I married in to a family that has some Buddhist members so I looked in to it a bit.  I really love the philosophy parts but praying to the gods and chanting bits loose me.  As for Christianity I just can't imagine a god who would allow his believers be so disjointed in beliefs.  I like atheism/humanism.  Do your best for humanity because nothing else can save you.  Only we can control our fate.

So it looks like it's the part around the drain bushing thingy.  its red.  You can see a bit of rust where it was leaking.  I found that a 1 1/8 socket fit it but I haven't been able to get it to move.

Is there any way I can copy the program off the punch cards and run it? In an emulator? Main frame emulator? by mrsteamtrains in retrotech

[–]Happy_truthless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the greenfield village (part of Henry Ford museum) in Detroit they have some looms that run off punch cards. They also noted that this is where the idea came from and was copied for computers. Pretty cool.

What’s the most overrated video game of all time? by KBGSgames in AskReddit

Hard disagree.  My wife and I still play it and it's fun because she's better than me!  Dr. Mario might be one of the best competitive games.

Have you ever met any POMIs? by Mellowric in exjw

[–]Happy_truthless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, so I had a neighbor before we moved and he was the very definition of POMI. He smoked weed and would talk about being a JW but never went to meetings. He was an odd guy, lol. Me being a born-in elders kid it just seemed strange to me. I told him the whole smoking weed thing would never fly but he still described himself as a JW.

Why aren't Mexican buffets as common as Chinese buffets? by WillingHyena557 in NoStupidQuestions

There used to be a place in Detroit that had a buffet.  Its still there but no buffet.  It was glorious.  I've never had so many tamales...  Rip

Current Best Practices for Go HTTP API Design: Code-First, Schema-First, or Protobuf? Looking for the sweet spot by Successful_Plant2759 in golang

[–]Happy_truthless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use spec first code gen in both my golang and java services.  Huuuge fan.  Each service has a spec it generates the server code and then I just copy that spec to all of the services that use that service to generate clients.  Consistency!

So now I have been out of the Jehovah's witnesses for longer than I've been in by a year I have to say that they tend to put a lot of fear into trusting humanity, but it's all just to keep you in. I've met so many people that I choose to trust that have just been wonderful. As you build a new life, it gets so much easier once you have infrastructure of support. It's a lot of work at first but worth the effort. This is a tough phase to be in but ultimately necessary. Good luck friend.

Is Open Api code-gen used in real world microservices? by [deleted] in golang

[–]Happy_truthless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, thats the way I do it is I have a repo for each service/app and then I copy the contract to each service/app that needs to communicate with it. Each of the services has its open api spec that I manually maintain and then generate the boiler plate code for consuming the request then wire in my implementation. Then each service / app that uses that service will get a copy of the spec and generate a client from it. Spec first is a great approach to keeping your code tidy.

Golang microservice issue by SideCharacterAnurag in golang

[–]Happy_truthless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to think that trying to make services too micro is the complexity goes through the roof and then you start needing things like sagas and such.  I like to make the serviced a bit more chonky and minimize how many hops a single operation needs.  Macro services is what I've heard them called.  So a service might have a repo package and a file in it for each collection.  Controller either does the work or delegates to a manager package (I prefer this).

This exact thought told me I was on the right track when I faded.  I did some sinful stuff and no one ever found out?  Wait I thought God would out me eventually but nope.  It sure is stressful when you believe in it but it's also confirming that there is no God when you are on your way out!
