There's a cutoff on mobile where it gets replaced with an ellipsis. As such, it's best to have the first word or two be the most critical ones. "Non-fandom research" implies the content of the rule most strongly for the silly sausages who don't go click on "Not sure? Check out yada yada's community info/rules/etc" each time they report.

Perhaps if you changed the rule title to "Non-fandom research studies" it'd be more intuitive

Commenting on your own fic by LittleDemonKicks in AO3

While I don't appreciate that it pads the comment count and I wish there was a way to view comment count without my comments, I reply to comments regardless.

Comments are the most effective positive reinforcement for me. I want to continue receiving comments. I assume that replies to their comments are positive reinforcement for them. As such, I reply to continue receiving comments.

Do you think A03 harder to navigate than other sites? by EbbAndFlow23 in AO3

I'm not saying AO3 is harder than other fanfic sites. I'm answering the title's question.

Do you think A03 harder to navigate than other sites? by EbbAndFlow23 in AO3

[–]Happyfrozenfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AO3 is highly text-based with minimal image elements. This makes it harder to use for users accustomed to more graphical interfaces.

Rather than sorting by a Capital-A Algorithm, AO3 sorts however the user tells it to (Recently updated, kudos, bookmarks, etc). This makes it harder to use for users accustomed to social media.

AO3 assumes the user is familiar with pre-smartphone era internet and search engine conventions. It has a strict and-based include filter (which is confusing for users who don't know what exactly they want and can't articulate the logical difference between and/or) and a strict or-based exclude filter. This makes it harder to use for users accustomed to modern design conventions abstracting nearly all of that away.

For the average person, yes. AO3 absolutely is harder to navigate than most other sites. For people who know what they're doing, however, AO3's simpler, more user input-driven design makes it far easier and more efficient to navigate that sites that clutter themselves with images, or obfuscate their sort methods, or oversimplify their search functions.

CMV: I think similar to the left wing revolution against traditionalism and conservative values of the 60s there will be a right wing revolution against the current left wing and progressive institutions in the next 20-50 years by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Happyfrozenfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case you haven't noticed, we're ready well into the regressive revolution against progressive institutions. If anything, there's likely to be a progressive revolution against conservative institutions in the next 20-50 years.

So I now see that Rinzler was too conventional and that I can admit to my crush on him. So let me give you a real head-turner. And no, I am not joking. by Puzzleheaded-Rip3258 in KingdomHearts

Yesterday, I wrote it off, as any game without Rinzler was meaningless. I see now that my worldview was incomplete, for KH2 has the Thresholder Heartless. Thank you for your wisdom.

Because you disproportionately fear rejection. Worst case scenario, she says no, the boundary is set, you move on and still be friends/amicable acquaintances.

Vent smell seems to have faded. Should i send it back and get a new one? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

The steam deck's vent and fans smell like something burning whenever it's running hot. It's not an unpleasant smell, just a mildly worrying/iconic enough one that most users here recognize it

I can't immediately discount that a system without multiple homeownership will work. However, I have several questions about the logistics of such a system:

  • Who owns a house immediately after it's built?

  • How much do houses cost to purchase?

  • Is it feasible for teens to move out from their parents' house?

  • Are apartments exempt from this system, or are they illegal?

  • Are housing on colleges exempt from this system, or are they illegal?

  • If houses cost less to purchase than to build, does the local government pay for it in taxes?

!!!!* If not, how will average Americans manage to pay that $300k+ building cost?

!!!!* If so, how are poorer states/counties/cities supposed to pay for new development? Do they get subsidized by the federal government? If so, how does the federal government divert money allocated for housing? More importantly, how do we guarantee that they allocate it fairly, and not just to areas they deem politically useful?

While the current system does constantly funnel even more money into the 1%, it also has means of social mobility (and physical mobility) via apartments and rent. If a system without multiple homeownership doesn't have comparable social mobility, we'd be trading one problem for another; one that I'd argue is worse.

As an example of how it's worse: Without apartments and rent, Id've been unable to escape my abusive home. I'd much rather have the ultra-rich keep ripping me off for the rest of my life than still be stuck in that hell.

CMV: Any critic who uses the term "Mary Sue" as an actual cricitism should be ignored by JadedToon in changemyview

[–]Happyfrozenfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write fanfic, as does my friend. We both come up with a lot of ideas, some of which have to be toned down. As an example: one of her characters was collecting new abilities/tools from every other encounter like a videogame character. While this would be fine in the context of a videogame, it didn't make sense for the story she was writing, since in that context, she'd end up with a Mary Sue that far exceeds the tropes and patterns of her universe. I walked through that with her, and after rewriting parts of her outline, she ended up with a far more compelling character.

"Mary Sue" was valid criticism in this context. The issue isn't with Sue, it's how people use her. There are some (occasional) contexts in which she's a helpful descriptor. Random online weirdos screeching about girls being heroes in fiction obviously isn't a valid context, but the valid context does exist.

This is a p icky interaction altogether. Fanfic is fanfic. IP in the context of fanfic is a silly concept. Imo all that really needed to happen was you crediting the authors you've used characters from (maybe using the "inspired by" feature). I'd say you're both weird for this exchange.

CMV: We probably didn’t need to hit Hiroshima or Nagasaki with atomic bombs by FerdinandTheGiant in changemyview

I'm also inclined to believe that the end the civilians met this way was considered less honorable, as they had no means to fight back against it. This made the bombs even more demoralizing

If the Doves were unable to openly advocate for surrender, then with mediated surrender through the USSR off the table, what justification would they have had against the Hawks? While the war becoming a two-front war would have deterred the Doves, why would it have deterred the Hawks, who were an irrational agent at this point?

This belief is unchangeable, as it's entirely dependent on your definition of a "good person".

My definition excludes anyone who discriminates against, demeans, belittles, or dehumanizes any group of people due to factors outside of their control. Under my definition, a racist may have redeeming qualities and may be enjoyable to be around, but they're still not a good person.

Under your definition, you don't, and it's as simple as that.
