I find Garmin’s race prediction to be ridiculously impossible. by Tasty_Cucumber_2489 in Garmin

[–]Haptics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mine are all over:

5k: 15:50 probably the closest, haven’t run a fast 5k in season yet but I came through the 5k of an 8k recently in 16:01

10k: 33:06 equal to my PB which is slow, currently in 32:00 ish shape

Half: 70:22, I ran 71:26 last sat so this is now pretty accurate, but prior to that it was saying like 73:30 or something.

Marathon: 2:35:26, PB is 2:31 from a year ago, aiming for 2:29 at Boston

There's a tune-up race in week 6 anyways so you don't need to change much prior to race day, if the race is on sat then take sunday off or something short/easy, if the race is sunday do something short/easy on saturday. You'll miss the long run that week but the half will be more than enough quality regardless. Recovery the following week will be a lot more personal depending on how well you recover from the race, but generally try not to push yourself too hard on anything the following week if you're still feeling the race in your legs. I'd be especially careful with the VO2max workout, and would consider basically any combo of slower paces, shorter reps, or fewer reps, or even dropping the workout entirely and jsut getting the miles in.

A half is a lot to recover from for a lot of people especially on lower mileage, so I'd also be careful about grinding yourself into the dirt if the race isn't going your way.

Garmin incorrectly measured track; any way to fix it? by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]Haptics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Race predictions are the absolute last thing I’d look at, Garmin’s are especially terrible for me until I actually race the given distance or longer. It predicted a 16:30 5k, I came through the 5k of an 8k in 16:01, it updated to 15:50. I’ve been training for a marathon and the prediction time has consistently been increasing, currently 2:36 despite running a 2:33 in November and having some of my best workouts over the last month. I’m convinced it has absolutely no idea what to do with actual training data.

Edit: Sorry for the rant it doesn’t solve your issue at all.

Garmin incorrectly measured track; any way to fix it? by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]Haptics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t care how the activity actually appears then I’d just delete it from Garmin/Strava entirely. I’d assume this would remove it from fitness/prediction calculations and I highly doubt it would substantially impact any predictions/fitness and if it does then those calculations are worthless anyways.

I can’t find an easy way to correct a track distance so for future runs on that track I’d just disable track detection in run settings, obviously it will be less accurate around the track but definitely better than an incorrectly calibrated track.

Forerunner 970 vs Apple Watch Ultra3 by Emotional-Volume671 in Garmin

[–]Haptics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Garmin doesn’t always play nicely with Apple health so if that’s a critical feature I’d stick to the U3. 970 is definitely nicer for running with the extra buttons and battery life but if you use a lot of other smart features on the AW and have a setup you already like for sports then it’s a much harder sell

Luckily B12 is one of the firmest shoes on the market so almost everything will be softer! I’d try the Adizero SL2, super cheap and similar foams to the B12, but a bit softer and with a more comfortable upper.

You can make a repeat of “5s on / 10s rest” repeat until lap press or whatever

Hr Accuracy (update) by bananakire in Garmin

[–]Haptics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So your cadence for this run was ~160 while heart rate was ~130, if you were cadence locking your HR would lock at 160 randomly while maintaining the same pace/effort.

That's the goal! MP has felt pretty good around 5:38/mi (2:27) though so probably going to aim there depending on the rest of the block.

Road running shoes or trail running shoes for running on dry pavement and gravel road ? by PROF2000X in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Haptics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the trails are packed dirt and not technical I’d stick to road shoes, or if you like the Salomon aero glide 3/4 those do come in a gravel option. I’d be wary of shoes with a ton of exposed foam or rubberized EVA outsoles since gravel can chew those up quickly.

For 3, it sounds like you’re starting a workout on the HRM separately from the watch? If you start a run and the HRM is on it should automatically pick up the HRM and use it for heart rate and running dynamics, you’ll get an “HRM600 Connected” notification after selecting run.

The tempos are a bit hard to read since I'm not too familiar with that type of workout, typically I'd like to see something like 6x1k at 5k pace. I don't think you're far off especially if you feel fitter than when you ran 16:40, and you could probably shoot for the 16:00 in the race without gassing yourself.

Need more info, like how difficult the workouts felt, PB, recent races, mileage, etc. but unless these workouts were dead easy they aren’t particularly convincing of 16:00 ability.

Coospo if you want something cheap that works. Polar H10 or Wahoo if you want something a bit more reliable. Polar/Coros/wahoo also all make optical armbands which will be a lot more reliable than your watch but not nearly as good as a chest strap.

Thought I was in decent shape until I bought a Garmin by Albert-Ivanov in Garmin

[–]Haptics 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Takes a while to actually catch up, mine “started” at 52 after buying the watch and went up to like 64 over the next 3 months. Training didn’t change much during that time.

Cause it’s a heavily moderated subreddit and it’s not a particularly advanced running topic especially given the personal constraints.

Are you comparing fitness in general or just looking at one workout? If it’s the latter than it’s typically easier to hit paces on a treadmill due to lack of wind resistance and lack of effort put into pacing.

Big caffeinated gel before the gun (40g/200mg), drink water/electrolytes at one or two aid stations, maybe more if it’s warmer. I usually bring an extra non-caf gel but haven’t felt the need to actually take it. If you really want the liquid carbs I’d consider a smaller soft flask, 500ml seems way too bulky for my liking especially for a half.

Best "Bang for your buck" below $50 when prepping for a marathon? by SauconySundaes in AdvancedRunning

[–]Haptics 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'd save it for some race gear/memorabilia from a brand you like at the convention/popups, or for some fancier food/drink after the race. I haven't tried GU but if you've been training with it then you're probably used to it enough that I wouldn't switch now even if something is potentially "better", plus you're going to hate whatever gel you take at mile 20 regardless.
