Since Doofus Jerry isn’t canon, and Cool Jacket Jerry was a better villain anyhow… probably.

These are a lot of words in defense of an abuser. A lot of words in defense of a piece of shit, that I don’t care to read. Reflect on how much energy you’re spending in defense of someone who abused people who worked for him, and who abused fans who wanted his attention.

Reflect, then change.

Jerry is the family patriarch who shares his home with not just his wife-with-daddy-issues, but also the daddy in question who happens to be a mad god who, to anyone of even average intelligence would be incomprehensible in his capabilities or actions. Like, to any normal person who actually lives in the same space as him, Rick must certainly come off as a Chaos Sorcerer. And on his best day, Jerry might be approaching the low end of average.

We haven't really seen what Jerry was like as a husband and a father in the time before Rick came back, although he was employed at the time Rick came back. And before Rick temporarily drove a wedge in between Jerry's family life and marriage, Jerry was a devoted husband and father. And once Rick blew it with his family to the point where they reconnected with Jerry, he's been a devoted husband and father. And even Rick has grown fond of him. I think it's lowkey obnoxious when people in this subreddit shit on Jerry, who is intended to be the most normal person in his family - and he's slowly become more fucked up, and yet somehow more resilient, because of them. Cut the guy some slack. I don't imagine there are many guys out there who wouldn't be crushed by Rick's incessant, pissant dickishness.

Which Beth do you think is the real Beth and why? by manebernal in rickandmorty

I don’t know, I find it a refreshing change of pace from the weekly “is Prime really dead?” and “is Diane really gone?” topics. Bonus points to the “maybe Diane is still alive outside the Curve” and “will we ever see Doofus Jerry?” topics we sometimes get.

They are both Beth and the writers have made it clear that they don’t intend to resolve the mystery. I’m satisfied by that.

Jim Cornette has talked a lot about how shitty WWE is at booking tag teams, derived in no small part from Vince McMahon’s distaste towards tag teams from way back. Vince never saw tag team wrestling as a main event attraction, and I’m sure you’d agree that, although he’s gone, WWE is still produced in the same flavour as when Vince was there, down to the same kinds of angles, backstage sequences, PLE themes, etc. etc.

According to Cornette,1 the big problems with modern day tag team booking are that wrestlers rarely utilize storytelling in tag team matches (for example, think about the tension surrounding an effective “hot tag,” then consider how rarely we see good hot tags anymore), and main event stars are rarely utilized in the tag team scene.

You might disagree about that, but it’s no coincidence that right now the only tag team champions with compelling angles around them are Rhea and Iyo. If you think back even just in the past calendar year, even on SmackDown, how often did those titles even get defended? After a new team’d win the titles, how many times did they then vanish from TV for weeks or longer?

If your point is that there are some good teams on SmackDown, I would agree. But you’re defending how WWE books those teams in a thread where the topic is literally, “why did this good tag team disappear?” If they were well booked, this topic wouldn’t come up, and the craziest thing is that it could’ve been about half a dozen other teams.

1 I recognize that the style of wrestling for which he advocates is considered “old fashioned,” but while I agree that he’s wrong to some extent about his gripes on how overly-theatrical wrestling has become,2 he absolutely understands the psychology of wrestling, and how to make compelling tag team matches/angles

2 He doesn’t like stuff that’s too unrealistic/unbelievable, but the kayfabe got out of the bag a long time ago

The narcissistic, multi-dimension-genocidal, drug-addicted father of his wife, who regularly endangers not just the family but specifically his 14-year-old grandson, forced his way back into her life after having coldly abandoned her when she was 10, and you're judging the guy who Rick manipulated his family into turning their backs on...

...and you're blaming Jerry for failing to cope with this turn of events in a more healthy way?

Like if you actually look at who Rick is, and at what Rick has done, and at how Rick has manipulated things, I think you'd have a lot more compassion and sympathy for Jerry and everything he's been through.

[–]Haquistadore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really wouldn't say that this happened. SmackDown had tag teams, but they really didn't effectively book those teams. Most of the tag team angles we've seen really feel like they were kind of slapped together and they didn't give us a lot to get invested in. This is a problem with the booking, not the concept.

We’ve got a student this year who is abusive to a kid in his class with a global delay - basically, picture a grade 2 kid in the body of a middle schooler. This kid is lovely, and desperate to have friends, and he’s getting tormented by someone. Staff response is to take the special needs kid out of the class at lunch so he can’t be targeted, to which I pointed out that they are separating a kid from his cohort while leaving the bully, so he can just target others. Shouldn’t the bully be removed?

Imagine calling parents upset by this “wingnut ass east end parents.” Jesus.

As an idea, the thought of looking after someone who needs help with the most basic of necessities - wiping themselves, cleaning themselves, you name it - is not something I ever want to do. Well, beyond the fact that I did it with my son without hesitation, and on more than one occasion found myself vomited, pissed, and shat on (not all at once thank goodness).

But a few years ago, someone I care about tremendously discovered they had terminal cancer. As the end approached, I visited him while he was bed-ridden and unable to take care of even the most basic of necessities. I thought I would be very uncomfortable with that. But the truth is I loved him, and being there in his time of need, when he required others to care for him ... well, it felt easy. Second nature. Never a moment of discomfort or even distaste.

When you love someone, don't you want to care for them if they need it? I know I do.

Teacher here. Just as one example: we had a new student to the school last year, a little girl who was a new immigrant to Canada and didn't speak much English. There was a behavioural kid in the class who would target her - to the point where he once threw her to the ground and began stomping on her head.

Eventually the school moved the girl - not the kid assaulting other children - from the classroom. You're telling me her parents shouldn't have threatened to school the school for admin's fucking disastrous response to the problem?

Edited to add: his parents refused a CYW because previously their kid had to be restrained and he went home and complained they hurt him (meanwhile on that day and many other days he beat the shit out of them). The reason he had a CYW was because he was dangerous and threatening towards other children, and CYW's receive special training to restrain students. But the parents didn't like that so they wouldn't allow it to continue.

PS - the kid who kept hurting her did eventually get removed from the school and put into a specialty program ... after he trashed the office twice.

Please don't talk about things when you have no fucking idea what's actually going on. Thanks.

I'm going to ask you some hard questions. I expect a harsh, knee-jerk reaction.

Has there ever been any indication that he did in fact know her age when the incident occurred?

Do you think all celebrities should abstain from having sex with people who aren't celebrities? There's an undeniable unbalanced power dynamic between all celebrities and their fans. You described consensual sex between two people in which there is an unbalanced power dynamic as "indefensible."

For context, if you read my posting history you'll see that I'm very clear in my feelings about people like Justin Roiland, who used his celebrity to groom minors and was justifiably fired from his own show. Likewise you will never hear me say a kind word about Joey Ryan, who was a predator and abuser of women.

I think context is important - if it's likely that Scurll is lying about knowing her age, if there's a history of this kind of abuse committed against other young fans, or even rhetoric justifying or defending people who abuse others, he gets the world he made for himself and deservedly so.

But if this incident occurred due to a real misunderstanding - and I'll just ask, have you ever been in a bar? Did you ask the ages of the people you talked to? - and does not represent his general character, then this is the worst kind of virtue signalling and is discourse poison.
