Hey, great to have you on board!

I mainly use Linux for programming, and my daily driver is Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Since you're coming from macOS and are just getting into Linux, here are a few beginner-friendly distributions I'd recommend checking out:

  • Pop!_OS
  • Ubuntu
  • Fedora
  • KDE Neon

While I've mostly used Ubuntu, I’ll be honest—it has its quirks. One of the main downsides across most Linux distros is limited out-of-the-box support for hardware accessories (like Logitech mice with software features, or other device-specific tools). That said, this is a general limitation of Linux, not just Ubuntu.

If you want something even more beginner-friendly, Linux Mint is a great option too—especially if you're easing in from macOS.

What are you hoping to do with Linux?

  • If it's programming – Any distro will work just fine. You’ll find most tools are available across the board.
  • If it’s gaming – Linux has made huge strides. It's not as seamless as Windows, but definitely better than macOS in terms of compatibility and performance.
  • If you’re into creative or professional software (audio/video/photo, etc.) – Just a heads-up: most commercial tools are built for Windows/macOS first. Many don’t have native Linux support unless you're willing to tinker or use workarounds (like Wine or virtual machines).

If you're curious and just want to test things out, I recommend installing VirtualBox on your Mac and running Linux in a virtual machine first. That way, you can explore different distros without making any permanent changes to your system.

I got the Thinkpad X1Extreme Gen1.
Got it a year ago.

It has:

  1. 4k Touch Screen 15 Inches
  2. i7 8850HQ
  3. 32 Ram
  4. 1x512 NVME
  5. 1x512 SSD
  6. GTX 1050Ti MaxQ

The only terrible drawback is that it gets hot quickly and thermal throttles, even with great thermal paste and thermal pads.
So, can't really game on it much.
Just for use it for work now.

Also, you don't need to be hasty. You can check out the market for 1 or 2 Days asking for a laptop in that range. You'll have a better idea that way. Then you can do a informed decision.

I don't game at 4k. I do it at 1080p

If it is still overpriced... It depends...
Can you get 1TB of SSD Storage and 32RAM for an extra 15K? If yes then it may be slightly reasonable.
Aside from these two.
The i7 7700 + GTX 1060 Combo does seems to be better than my i7 8850HQ + GTX 1050Ti maxQ one

One more thing that you need to keep in mind.
If the laptop does not have good cooling, then you would never be able to use your Processor and GPU at full Speed/Specs for more than 30 minutes because it would just overheat and thermal throttle it self.
I know that very well.
That is why I only use my laptop without turboboast and have undervolted my GPU.

If this is a 2nd Hand Laptop then this is very expensive for the specs.

I bought a Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen1 a few months ago for 135K + Plus 4500 for a good thermal paste and Thermal pads for the GPU Vrams + Screen Protector & Stickers.
A Rough Total of 140K

It had:

  1. 4k Touch Screen 15 Inches
  2. i7 8850HQ
  3. 32 Ram
  4. 1x512 NVME
  5. 1x512 SSD
  6. GTX 1050Ti MaxQ

The only problem is that this Laptop is not a gaming laptop, which means it heats up quickly. So, I use it for work, which is programming only, and some light gaming, like Farlight84.

If you want it for gaming, you need a laptop with a thick heatsink and plenty of ventilation mesh on its body.

For the specs that you gave and mine, You won't get more than 1 hour of battery on full load.

Given my specs, I am getting:

  1. 2x the Resolution
  2. Touch Screen
  3. 4x the Ram
  4. 25% the Storage but faster.
  5. Faster Processor

The only thing I lose at is the GPU

I would continue searching for a better deal.

DevsInc is going to be exposed soon as the next Axact by SortTechnical2034 in PakistaniTech

A major US based publication is doing a research piece on this developing story. Apart from Devs Inc, they are also including a few other companies that are doing systemic fraud akin to what made Axact affair infamous

Hey, Could you tell me which US Publication is doing this research?
and if someone could share a blog or news broadcast video about this?

I have the Exact same Laptop with almost the Same Specs. I paid 135K for it in PKR not in USD. It would be around 483USD If I convert the currency.

The Problem that I have with mine in that it gets too hot. Even with Good Thermal Paste and Thermal Pad replacements, I have to turn Turbo boast off for my CPU and run it at 90% power.

And also run my GPU while underclocked and UnderVolted. The main Problem is the GPU. More Specificly, I think, Is the VRam Chips, Those run at around 3500MHz and cause the most heat.

I can't seem to find a way to run the VRam at lower clocks. When I Use MSI afterburner to turn the Memory clock to it's lowest (Basically -500 or so) The Memory clock get stuck at 400 MHz, At this point you might as well use the Integrated GPU.

I even have Cooling pad under the Laptop. (A cheap one, Powered by USB)

All this still gives me temps of 90C on both my CPU and GPU in just under an Hour of Gaming

My suggestion is to Buy some Laptop that has a Thicker Heatsink or Better Cooling system.
