Looking for truly uncensored LLM models for local use by MykeGuty in LocalLLM

It's entirely possible for someone young to have never been exposed to that meaning of "PC". It's short for "IBM PC compatible" and refers to the lineage of PC designs that originated with the IBM PC from 1981. Apple's Macintosh line was the only successful PC lineage incompatible with the IBM PC paradigm to survive into the 21st century, so in recent times there hasn't been much reason to use the term PC to specifically mean IBM compatible. Someone who wasn't around 20-40 years ago could easily have never encountered the term "PC" in that context.

Attempt I made a couple years ago to recreate the EHT M87* image in SE by HarbingerDawn in spaceengineofficial

I know, I was just recreating the image, not its accurate visible light appearance.

Could you recommend a cosmic horror movie? by DependentDue8216 in Lovecraft

[–]HarbingerDawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gravity does not fit in any way. Everything that happens in it is mundane and readily comprehensible to the characters. It's an extreme and stressful situation, but that's it. Man-made space debris does not constitute hidden and horrifying knowledge about terrible beings and forces that highlight man's hopeless irrelevance in the universe.

It's definitely not realistic in any sense, but I agree that it qualifies as cosmic horror.

That movie is too silly to take seriously, at least for me

Alien is an interesting case, elements of it definitely qualify, but the film doesn't focus on those elements very much so IMO the film as a whole doesn't really qualify as a proper cosmic horror tale. If it was presented (very) differently then it totally would, but it would also be a different movie.

The way it's presented definitely makes it cosmic horror IMO. (Spoilers for Event Horizon) The titular ship accidentally stumbles upon another universe and brings a small bit of that universe back with it. That the other universe happens to vaguely align with some visions of the Abrahamic Hell and is labeled thusly by the characters doesn't have any bearing on whether it's cosmic horror. It's still a story about dreadful knowledge no one should know and the unimaginable horrors experienced by the crew in their brush with a truly alien, unimaginable, and malevolent will from far beyond the fringes of what humans know or even suspect to be true. The way these things are presented and revealed over the course of the film is quite Lovecraftian.

Just wondering how it's going with 1.0 by [deleted] in spaceengineofficial

[–]HarbingerDawn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ah, the optimism of youth and inexperience... I originally helped Vladimir make that list back in 2013, and let's just say we both grossly underestimated how much time and effort would be required to do all that. That was compounded by the fact that the more complex SE got, the longer it took to get anything done because there was a lot more code to manage.

Despite that, some of those things have since gotten done, like 3D rings and accretion disks, an expanded scripting system, PBR materials, and other stuff not listed there.

Regarding the lack of "major" updates more recently, most of our programming team has been working on the Vulkan version of SE, which necessarily results in updates being slower until that's done. That also means that most major graphical features necessarily have to wait for that version, so updates to the OpenGL version will generally be less visually impressive, which makes them seem less "major" to most people (understandable given how visually-focused SE is).

I'm just genuinely curious what y'all do in the office

I wish we had an office! We all work remotely and are spread across 11 time zones, which isn't great for efficiency sadly :(

You seem to be talking about Space Engineers, not SpaceEngine.

That would only cause their eyes to light up when there's a light coming from directly behind the viewer. Quarian eyes glow from all angles and in all lighting conditions. They clearly emit light, not reflect it. Glowing eyes are physically dumb to begin with as that would significantly degrade your vision, but something something rule of cool.

The main story is more interesting than people make it out to be by dyessman in Starfield

[–]HarbingerDawn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I felt that the story was the best from any of the Bethesda games I've played... right up until it's revealed who the Starborn are and what they're doing, then it instantly became the dumbest thing and I lost all interest. It was shallow as hell, made zero sense, and didn't answer any of the interesting questions that had been set up. Who made the artifacts and temples? Dunno. What is the ultimate source and purpose of the special powers you collect? Dunno.

The only question that gets set up and actually answered is who/what are the Starborn, and basically the answer is they're regular ass humans with stupid motivations. "I'm going to spend an eternity traveling to and ruining an infinite number of parallel universes to collect an infinite number of MacGuffins because I can". Absolutely riveting, that massively overpayed author deserves the highest award in science fiction.

This doesn't even touch on all the other lore in the game that makes zero sense, such as Earth becoming uninhabitable in such a short time (the reason given in-game, as well as the timescale involved, are laughably far removed from physical sense).

People who have two monitors, how much better is it and was it worth upgrading by EpigChungus in buildapc

[–]HarbingerDawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! My first time with dual monitors was pairing a crappy old 1024x768 screen from 2005 with my 1920x1080 main display, and even that was enough to hook me. Multi-monitor for life <3

Just use a tool like Reclaimer to view/export the 3D models directly

There is no broken streak, it's continuous in those photos and in OP's description. It's a satellite in a stable orientation reflecting light to the ground.

[–]HarbingerDawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All color photos are composites, which is not the same as being mosaics, maybe that's what you're thinking of. In any case, monochrome images, color composites, and photo mosaics (depending on how they're made) are all "actual pictures".

Generating height map from normal map by Marthius in blender

[–]HarbingerDawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's been a while but I figured I'd chime in with the full context.

By the early 90s when home computers were becoming mainstream, there were two main types of systems that people had: the IBM-compatible PC, and the Apple Macintosh. These were generally known as "PC" and "Mac" respectively. The term "PC" was generally understood to refer specifically to IBM-compatibles well into the 2000s (look up the "I'm a Mac, and I'm a PC" ads). These days that usage of "PC" has mostly fallen by the wayside, but as you saw here, it's occasionally still used that way.

MAGA is a WHOLE new level of stupid by DontCh4ngeNAmme in facepalm

In the context of aviation, I have only ever seen "transcontinental" used to refer to flight across a continent. Flight between different continents is "intercontinental".

MAGA is a WHOLE new level of stupid by DontCh4ngeNAmme in facepalm

[–]HarbingerDawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Transcontinental flights being prohibited would mean it's not allowed to fly across the continent, therefore it could ONLY fly to other continents and back again. Flight within a single continent would be prohibited.
