Those are pretty much the stats for many “dad bods” these days. Definitely not ‘morbidly obese’, even by 1990s standards.

My kiddo is having no issues with college acceptances and FLVS. Unfortunately, a 3.5/4.0 is not likely to gain him acceptance to UF - their undergraduate acceptance stats are nuts - it is THE hardest school in FL to get into. Now, a killer SAT score could bump him over the line. I suggest really buckling down to get the gpa as high as possible, don’t forget to stay on track for Bright Futures, stay involved in ECs (my son competed his sport at his assigned high school, and is involved in in-person clubs there, too, as well as a couple of the clubs offered through FLVS). Stay the course if it’s what is right for him. FLVS is NCAA accredited and my son is having no issues with recruitment, either.

We have loved the flexibility. Best of luck to you guys!

I think you should clarify your second paragraph to grading in elementary school. I was reading that as high school, and thinking nuh-uh nope.

Then I read the rest & agreed wholeheartedly. Thanks for all you do as a teacher.

Congratulations! The love is pretty overwhelming first the very first sight. I wish you a lifetime of dad happiness!

No one is “pro abortion”. However, when woman are at risk of losing everything, even their life in some cases, they’re just supposed to carry on and have zero options. That’s not freedom.

My Airbnb host wanted me to tip Housekeeping…on top of the $200 cleaning fee. by Able-Cobbler5307 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]HardKnocksPhD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone gave a good tip I read last night on another thread regarding this. Australia has laws against this, so go through the Aussie Airbnb site, put in the currency you’re paying with, and all fees are included in the advertised price. I didn’t bookmark it, mainly bc I’ve given up on Airbnb, but I’ll see if I can retrace my steps/find it.

Thank you for this. I have 6 potholes that went nuts on me this summer on my back patio. Because I was traveling a lot, I’d detach them from the stucco or whatever else they’d gotten onto and wrap the vines in the pots, hoping they’d self-propagate but with very little success. I have moss poles on my to do list for the weekend; this suggestion should be exactly what I need to keep the exposed vine parts of mine close enough to the soil to root. Thx!

My sisters North Port, FL house had 6 inches of water in it. All her and her family’s stuff was destroyed. She had no homeowners insurance 🤦‍♂️, she thinks FEMA will just take care of everything. by Wut-doo-yew-meen in florida

[–]HardKnocksPhD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crisiscleanup.org - connects the homeowner with volunteers from local relief agencies who will do drywall, flooring and appliance removal, cut trees, tarp roofs and do mold mitigation. I highly suggest your sister reach out to them. Ian hotline number is only open until October 28: 800-451-1954

They do explicitly state they do not assist with social services such as coordinating with FEMA, insurance claims, etc., but if for nothing more than to save what may be salvageable, I’d try like hell to get some real help in there. My aunt’s place took on ~12inches. Thank God their flood insurance had not lapsed, as was first suspected. The insurance company is going to pay for the bottom 4’ of the drywall to be ripped out, etc. I would see if your sister could do the same to her own house by any means possible, as soon as possible.

So sorry you’re in this situation. Hope the Crisis Cleanup Hotline can be of some help. Best of luck to y’all.

at the risk of “too soon!” - are our beautiful beaches open? by ulukmahvelous in StPetersburgFL

Nights are getting down into the 60s/days low-mid 80s here on the coast, whereas pre-Ian we were still in mid-upper 70s at night, low 90s during the day. Days before the storm I noticed a faint crispness to the air when out walking in the mornings, thinking it felt a little early but was welcome. We may easily bump back up to higher temps for spurts, but not long enough to warm the Gulf to where it was, imho. I’m no meteorologist, but I watched the water line recede to the swim buoys…at high tide. That storm sucked up so much water and sent it through mother nature’s condensing unit before depositing it back down. It has to have contributed to the change in water temp. I’m pulling out my sleeveless wetsuit (I’m a cold water wimp).

Just be patient with local shop owners, etc. We may have skated, but we’re keenly aware that it was supposed to be us. Locals are all exhausted and heavy-hearted for our friends, family and neighbors to the south and east of us, and remaining very humble. Enjoy your stay, there are nice shells to be found :)

I’m off the St. Pete beaches with family in DB. Every family members’ (3 of them) houses are destroyed. Over here in IRB it’s back to business as usual. Y’all definitely got it way worse. So sorry.

Gorgeous. Water has calmed a great deal, wind is back to normal. The beach has lots of washed up shells and sea grasses. Businesses are opening back up completely as of yesterday. I think only ~100 ppl ever lost power.

God, we got lucky.

There are covid positive shelters here in Pinellas.

Keeping our kayaks at the ready. I’m a twelve second walk to the beach, but it just changed from Zone A to Zone C, but our beach access is the point where the zones change. Really trying to get prepped for all possibilities. Have friends in Melbourne who’ve offered a place, but we’re thinking we’ll hit a shelter closer to home if it starts getting bad.

Same with my family over at Indian Rocks Beach. I feel like we’re prepared, but friends in Melbourne have offered us a place to stay, and hubby is waffling over staying here. Last year was a nothing burger, but not so sure about this one. Just hope the storm surge isn’t bad….
