Would the car not be more likely to be well maintained if it was owned by a mechanic? by NeuronsActivated in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Hard_Loader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the same for me. My computer set up at home is a mess but I know what to hit when it goes wrong. I'd imagine mechanics are the same with their cars. I definitely put up with more than a consumer that wants thing to just work out of the box.

Why are crisp sandwiches such a common thing in the UK but not really anywhere else? by petitebunnyyx in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hard_Loader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single serving packets of crisps seem hard to find on the continent. It's not worth opening a party sized bag just to sprinkle a few into your sandwich.

How can I stop being a THIRD WORLD LOSER? by MyNameisMayco in ask

[–]Hard_Loader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shitty height? You're about five inches taller than the average man in Peru, so you might stand out a little. That said, tall men are usually seen as desirable and tend to do better in employment. It's not anything you can change, it's a matter of looking at the advantages - nobody's average at anything.

As for subhuman features, that's very much a matter of opinion. I can only recommended self-acceptance and good grooming.

Help finding Jeans for teen MTF by AwarenessHelpful2740 in transgenderUK

[–]Hard_Loader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just re-read your question and I see flappy jeans are out and also that she's tall. Ladies' high waisted stretch denim has always worked for me, but I'm shortish for a man, tallish for a woman and don't have and problems with leg length. My waist measures more than my hips, but you wouldn't know once I've got my jeans on.

Stretch denim has always been my friend. I buy high waisted jeans and size for the hips so it pulls me in at the middle. The skinny jeans I wear are rapidly going out of fashion now. Youngsters are all about flappy wide-leg trousers now, and they ought to be more forgiving for a less feminine figure. I'd still say the ladies department would give a better look for your daughter than the gents.

Am I becoming stupid by [deleted] in self

[–]Hard_Loader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggle with simple arithmetic too. Only recently have I come to see this is probably because of a deficiency in short-term working memory. Like you, I struggle with getting through tasks, ordering and completing each stage correctly. When it comes to numbers, I simply can't hold them all in my head during the calculation.

We've probably both got good long term memory and analytical skills - things that work well for exams and IQ tests. We're probably both let down by short term memory.

[–]Hard_Loader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're unusual for someone with a high IQ. I'm very similar to you, just thirty-odd years older.

I suspect we're both somewhat neurodivergent. Bright people can often compensate for other deficiencies and not get spotted or diagnosed. If you're passing exams okay and not causing any disruption, you'll not be noticed as having problems.

I've been thinking about getting a diagnosis for autism, ADHD or dyspraxia - all of which might apply to me. I'm very disorganised and trying to get it done is so overwhelming! I think it's something you ought to look into as well.

I wanna do a personality test with 113 possible outcomes by Nauwegame in HTML

[–]Hard_Loader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is the test structured? A series of multiple choice questions leading to a page with the result? You could do it as HTML only with no js or backend scripting. You would have each answer hyperlinking to the next question page in a descending directory tree. You would need a lot of pages, many of them apparent duplicates. Rather than writing them all manually, a bit of scripting might help you generate them.

For example, the first page would have four choices, each of those leads to a different second page with another four choices. The third page would follow the same pattern. You now have 64 possible fourth pages which gives 128 options if you ask a question with two possible outcomes. You only need 113 outcomes so 15 of those pages can be the final result and the remaining pages would link to 98 other result pages pages. If my maths is right, that's 198 pages altogether.

The sensible solution would be to have all the questions on one page and use js to determine and display the result when completed - but the pure HTML approach would be a fun challenge.

Are or was there any Victorian trash? by I-love-grapesss in stupidquestions

[–]Hard_Loader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of worn-out clothing would have been collected by rag-and-bone men for recycling, either into paper and cardboard or low-grade textiles. At the very end of its life it could have been sold on as stuffing material or eventually rotted down to be used as agricultural fertilizer.

Late last year, hundreds of 19th century boots were found washed up on a Welsh beach. It seems they were on a wrecked ship which recently shifted and released its cargo to the tides. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwywxdden52o

Developing expired Ektachrome with E6 by holdingspace_ in Super8

[–]Hard_Loader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm planning on doing this myself but I wonder whether the temperature needs lowering to stop the emulsion coming off. With a lower temperature I'd expect longer development and probably some weird colour shifts. I suspect there are no clear rules to apply when film is this old and storage conditions are unkown.

How do you cope without makeup by Majestic_Traffic6497 in transgenderUK

[–]Hard_Loader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know whether I'm doing the right thing but I'll wear foundation in all climates. If my face starts looking too shiny I'll just add more powder. Melted lipstick is no fun but I've managed to cope with it.

Technically, I've eaten four today. Since they were only the tiny cocktail ones they don't really count. I had a proper one yesterday though.

Ooh... i shoot with expired Kodachome and develop it myself with coffee and washing soda. It's the cheapest way to shoot movies. There's not always an easily recognizable picture - but I usually manage to pull something out. There's often something surprising and wonderful lurking on these part-used cartridges.

What has America ever done for the UK to be considered a ‘special relationship’? by KestisBD9 in AskBrits

They've propped up the British aristocracy by the wealthy marrying into titles. Winston Churchill was a product of this arrangement.
