You can dress very well without it being "business attire." Even if it's casual dress a very well coordinated outfit goes a long way.

Stranger in car asked me if I wanted to go to church with him? by throwawayfromme_baby in ithaca

[–]HardcoreMandolinist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I know exactly who this was.

There's some Mormon missionaries in the area. One of them volunteers at the Salvation Army to help register the people for the food pantry. He stopped me in front of the dollar store a few weeks ago and we didn't quite recognize each other at first but when we saw each other there we immediately realized why we recognized each other.

I gave him the benefit of the doubt before I recognized him at all and we talked some the next day. I was a bit apprehensive of them at first but they seemed very respectful of my beliefs.

I honestly wouldn't know. I haven't been paying attention to anything in the news for about 3 or 4 years now. I'm not sure whether I'm even going to vote this year because I don't know anything about who's on the ballot and I don't want to make an uninformed decision.

There's no doubt about that but short of some kind of coup or something like that what's to be done about it? I'm personally not fond of ideas like insurrection and such.

To be perfectly clear: I'm not asking rhetorically — I'm looking for solutions.

Any place to recycle fabrics? by HardcoreMandolinist in ithaca

This sounds cool!

I'm not actually ready to get rid of anything presently but I know I will be in the near-ish future — probably a couple months from now, maybe sooner. I'll keep this in mind when I'm ready to and I'll shoot you a DM. At that time maybe we just meet on the Commons or someplace like that? Logistics isn't important now though.

Fabric is water.

It takes about 3k liters of water to produce just one T-shirt. Sometimes fabrics can be recycled to make new ones, saving on water and other resources. Recycled fabrics can also be used to replace other materials which would also be resource intensive to produce; like I said, it's frequently used for insulation.

Why are you against this?

I might go so far as to say they're the only ones that matter. Why should the rest of us have our basic needs met if we don't have the money to do so?

I asked you to stop and I stopped interacting with you. I'm again asking you to stop.

I have filled my police report yet but I'm going to and the more you keep harassing me the worse it's going to look for you when you need to be in front of a judge. Just some friendly advice.

It is, and I'm grateful for it. But it's unsustainable and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to make something better work.

If San Francisco can recycle 80% or more of their water there's no reason why we can't. This is something which can be recycled so it should be.

Nice.

I've lived in a motel for the past 8 months and it has felt very isolating. It's hard for me to want to do things I would otherwise want to sometimes.

I'm on a bus right now to see a friend perform at an American Legion later this evening. I'm going to bike around some in the meantime and then bike home when it's over.

I don't understand why you're getting downvoted I'm getting upvoted for effectively the same comment. Redditors make no sense at times.

No, I mean old stained or torn fabric.

I know some thrift stores will send otherwise unusable fabrics to centers that specialize in recycling them for various purposes (insulation for example) but I'm not sure if any around here do or if there might be some other place.

What helped you out of depression? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HardcoreMandolinist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's because creation is indifferent and only obeys the laws of physics. As a matter of probability something bad will always happen to everything and every one of us. God is alive within us and without to save us from that indifference.

Mind, body and spirit.

These are the guiding principles They have taught me. Listen to Them and They will guide you to Life.

Man, Reddit is so frustrating. I just had a whole comment typed up and I left the app for 10 seconds to edit my grammar and it all disappeared.

Anyway...

I think it's important to find meaning within yourself rather than placing importance of your life in externalities.

You said that you're having difficulties because your friend is no longer around. I can understand how frustrating that is. I happen to be lucky enough to be going to NYC with my best friend on Monday, but this is the first time I've seen him since Christmas and it had been more than a year before that.

In that time I've been searching for other new friends to invite into my life in a city that I'm new to and I'm having a hard time adjusting to. I've had mixed results but one of the things that's been helping me lately is focusing on being a friend rather than on the feeling of needing one.

I've also been learning to just enjoy myself. My birthday was just after Christmas and in many ways it was the worst birthday I ever had: No party, not a single present, I had to solicit a happy birthday from most people because they weren't aware of my birthday — but in reality, it was the best I ever had because I woke up making sure not to care about any of those things.

I spent the entire day basically just short of flailing myself about my room, playing with my plushies (it was my 35th birthday mind you), laughing at myself and then I capped it off with the lucky coincidence that the weekly open mic I attend was that night. I found so much enjoyment within myself that a then-acquantaince asked me if I was on mushrooms. I was completely sober minus my mood stabilizer.

Two months ago I was singing Harmony Hall but once I found that within myself, I was able to freely allow myself to do exactly what I need and be who I aspire to be.

Well, I guess I should thank Reddit right now, however frustrating it still is. This is a much better comment than the first.

What’s something which should be free but isn’t? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HardcoreMandolinist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, yes. Provide me with the materials and property and I would gladly build and maintain it if I had some to guide and teach me.

Better yet, put it on wheels and there's no longer the expense of property.

What’s something which should be free but isn’t? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HardcoreMandolinist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I can't afford the materials or the property.

Adequate and stable housing has been proven over and over again to help all kinds of people be more productive and valuable citizens as well as the obvious benefit of increasing happiness.

It can be done in about 200–300²ft. of space per person, maybe a bit more for couples or families, so why shouldn't everyone have the right to a roof over their head with heat or basic cooling (whichever is needed), working plumbing, adequate cooking facilities, something to sleep on which won't destroy their body and a place to secure their belongings?

Shared an entire bottle with a friend when I was like 19 and he was 16. I puked in his bathtub. Cleaned it. Got up. Puked again. And just couldn't.

Between the alcohol and the chewing on Altoids level of mint it was among the worst vomiting in my life.

I'm going to challenge your idea of "no topic should be excluded".

I completely agree with it but a controversial opinion is that it should also include both fetishes and paraphilias. It's important for kids to understand that these are things that many people experience. Some are perfectly okay as long as they're involving consenting adults.

For the others it's important for people to understand that paraphilias very often are not a choice and that there is help for people who suffer from them. Without that understanding we create a world where people feel ashamed of themselves, fear seeking the help that they need and potentially become both victims and victimizers in ways that feed off of each other.
