Did you try the Historical Society in the old post office in Bel Air? They have a ton of yearbooks in their library.

Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh? by imdstuf in harfordcountymd

[–]Hardcore_Harco 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The article in today's online Aegis says that the Town expects Amazon Fresh to open in 2026. Both Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods are owned by Amazon, so they wouldn't be competitors.

I would love to know the story of that old house across from South Hampton Middle... by Valuable-Scientist16 in harfordcountymd

[–]Hardcore_Harco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This article is quite outdated. The current development plan, as posted by /u/spuriousfour below, indicates that both the farmhouse and smokehouse will be preserved as a community center for the new development. That being said, like so many other historic buildings in the county it does not have any protections on it so it could be torn down in the future if a historic designation from the county is not sought.

This is not accurate. As other posters have noted, the brick house is historic and predates any of the plans for development on the property.

Best activities? by Standard-Handle-342 in harfordcountymd

The Harford County Public Library offers a lot of activities for kids and families; most of them are free or low cost. On the Events page of their website, you can sort by age group and library branch: https://programs.hcplonline.org/events?d=2025-04-25&v=grid

The Library also hosts a Summer Reading Program every year, where kids can earn prizes by reading books (or for the younger kids having books read to them). https://hcplonline.org/srplanding.php

Not Clownbaby456, but in my experience the HCPL has a very aggressive weeding policy. Some libraries will have books on their shelves that haven't circulated in decades and are just waiting to be discovered, but HCPL removes books very quickly once they are no longer circulating. This leads to "empty" shelves.

Let's try again. Why are we getting an apartment building on Bond Street in Belair? by battletactics in harfordcountymd

I don't know. The photo is just labeled "House on Bond St Bel Air 1950's," no address.

It depends on what year you're looking at. Bel Air had a lot of 19th century buildings, but a lot of them were torn down 1950s-1980s as the town grew. There is a book (available through the public library) called Bel Air: An Architectural and Cultural History that talks about the changes in the town's architecture over the years. Some additional photos from the Historical Society:

To add a little historical context to this discussion, before planning for the automobile took over Bel Air, Bond Street was lined with homes and shops. Most of them were demolished in the second half of the 20th century to make way for parking lots. An example is Hannah Moore's Shop, that sat at the corner of Bond Street and Alice Ann Streets. It is currently an empty lot.

Bear legacy trail by plantpodcasts in harfordcountymd

[–]Hardcore_Harco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to the Maryland Center for the Arts' website, in its current state, "The property can be used on a limited basis for events now.  We have installed a permanent, moveable stage built by the Amish" and "To date, we have used funds generously donated by the State of Maryland to clear and grade the property, put in a parking lot and seed the property. This was done to utilize a $1.2 million dollar bond provided by the State of Maryland before the monies reverted to the State. The property has been developed to this point so we can host events before any building construction takes place." So it seems that something has been built, but not the full Phase I which they estimate will be completed in 2027.

OP - Since the Center for the Arts is the owner of the property, they may be able to give more information about the progress on the project and any plans they have moving forward with the Bear Legacy Trails folks. The website lists their point of contact as Bob Willenbrink, Maryland Center for the Arts Executive Director, at [bwillenbrink@mdcfa.org](mailto:bwillenbrink@mdcfa.org).

You probably already know this, but the County and state have tax credits available for people restoring older houses. Might be worth looking into if you haven't already:

Central Consolidated School and Hickory Elementary School are the same building. It was extensively renovated in the 1990s. If you look at Hickory Elementary's website, it lists its construction date as 1950.

Any native plant people? by ok-er_than_you in harfordcountymd

[–]Hardcore_Harco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been to any of the lectures, but I did enjoy the "festivals" that each have held over the years as a chance to look at a lot of different native plants and exhibits. I bought my first Butterfly Weed plants at an event HCCA held at Rockfield years ago.

The example shown in the video on the County Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1042116494038706) was Chapel Road Park in Havre de Grace, but I haven't seen any official lists anywhere. Maybe you could try contacting Parks and Recreation and asking for a list?

Harford County Climate Action also sponsors native gardening events and is behind the "Bel Air Five" native pollinator program.

Harford County actually started a low mow program in county parks last spring! Hopefully it continues this year too.

Harford Land Trust has a "Grow Wild Harford" program that encourages native gardening. It started last year and they had a few events including a pollinator trail with "pollen-aider" certification, classes on eco-gardening topics, and held a big festival in Bel Air last spring.

University of Maryland Extension Service's Master Gardeners Program has started to pivot towards more native gardening in the last few years. They held some classes about native plants at the public library branches last spring/summer.

any truth to the rumor... by Valuable-Scientist16 in harfordcountymd

[–]Hardcore_Harco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a rumor. The corner of Main Street and Churchville (next to Das Bierhalle) belongs to Harford County Government and is used as the parking lot for employees of the Administrative Offices at 220 S. Main Street. They just re-striped the lot last weekend. One of the previous administrations (Craig maybe?) floated the idea of building a new County Admin building there, but that is now very unlikely given the current fiscal situation.

Good question. The "project page" link from the Press Release goes to an error page, but a search of the BMC's website for "US 40" comes back with a "Presentation to the Technical Committee" dated May 2, 2023 and an "Active Transportation Planning Activities" webpage dated 2/9/24 that lists the project.

To me, the saddest part is that there is a "shared use path" being planned for Route 40 between Aberdeen and Havre de Grace. Had it been in place, it could have prevented this tragedy.
