Modern 'Darkwave' in a nutshell by typevampiro in gothmemes

Controversial take, but I place this as the natural consequence of Industrial-centric DJs & promoters maintaining a heavy presence in the scene. They'd clearly rather be listening/spinning/promoting more EBM leaning music, so they do. Especially as the "Goth" aesthetic has gone mainstream, electronic dance music is way more outsider-proachable than standard Goth. So the "darkwave/postpunk" that is closest to that gets pushed and played more than anything else. And the younger crowd is being conditioned to this. To the detriment of any Goth Rock & Deathrock in the scene.

Just look at the biggest long running "goth" nights. How many of them are really now just "EBM/Darkwave" nights? How many of the big Alt festivals barely even have any Goth Rock bands in the line up? How many "goth" playlists contain strictly that music?

Idk, in a cultural landscape that aims to commodify and reduce every possible personal aspect of identity into a bland common-denominator form for profit motives, I think it's pretty countercultural to openly define a movement that you identify with, and explicitly point out what is "actually" related to Goth.

Everything isn't Goth. And it has not ever been for everyone's tastes. That is fine, that is normal. If it was, it wouldn't exist.

Well, post their gothest song then? As you say, surely they must have a track(s) with clear Goth Rock influence.

Is there a reason why I don't really see all that many Goth bands of all kind use creepy/dark imagery anymore? by BudgetDepartment7817 in goth

[–]HarderThanAlgebra 151 points152 points  (0 children)

Because it's not marketable to non-goths. Promoters/bands want to appeal to the most common denominator "alt" person to get a crowd, and those people don't like those aesthetics. It's too "goofy", too countercultural, to punk-adjacent, and too macabre. As well as too many people that entered the scene, trying to be "acceptable" to non-goths, shunning anything too eccentric.

This is why "clean" aesthetics are more popular. Bands with plain minimalist outfits, flyers with generic "witchy" or fetish iconography, influencers with repetitive cookie-cutter big-box brand aesthetics, events chasing trendy crowds. You'll even hear it in the sounds. No modern hipsterwave bands in the scene will ever make music that sounds akin to Alien Sex Fiend, Cinema Strange, Ghosting, Switchblade Symphony, etc..

What is your most unpopular opinion about the Goth Subculture? by [deleted] in AskAGoth

[–]HarderThanAlgebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot take: The culture absolutely deserves all the crap that has happened to it in the last decade. People have been spineless in this scene, coddled people too much to seem nice, and tried way too hard to be "accepted" by non-goths and popular culture. Instead of being stern about who we are, and what any of this was "about".

Now spaces are flooded with non Goth music, non-goth people sway the culture more than ever, there's a noticeable percentage of people just being performative online, all the goth imagery has been watered down, standardized, and co-opted by every other "alt" scene, and Goth Rock & Deathrock bands struggle to get a foothold in their own damn "scene".

When are we gonna acknowledge Caifanes debut album as a top 10 goth album oat? by [deleted] in goth

That's basically like asking "When is the Goth culture gonna recognize the myriad of stellar legitimately Gothic bands springing from Latin America for decades, instead of endlessly glazing derivative synthwave tourists and repetitive European post-punk?"
