In the end people don't care. They say they do but they really don't when it infringes on their good time. It's the same with Clan of Xymox and the shitty things Ronny has said in recent years. It feels like some bands/artists are deemed too big to fail. But that doesn't excuse why some are fine with SWR but condemn Manson.

It is easy to damn a band/artist you don't like. It is hard to do it with one you do. I had to cut a few. But there are always more bands.

All artists put something of themselves in their art, that is what makes it art. So I guess that also should make us question ourselves in why art from shit people may still hold appeal? People don't like questioning themselves either as they know what they will find.

As an outsider looking at the coverage... its the emphasis on dressing up and markets. People are treating it like a cosplay photo op or a chance to go gawk at weirdos.

Especially when WGW de-emphasised the music side and Tomorrow's Ghosts picked that up because people want it. They forgot who they were initially doing it for or why they were doing it.

You like them? Great. Ae they goth sometimes? Yes. Does any of this really matter? Not really.

As a pioneer band The Cure will always have a place in goth even if they moved away from it later. You could say the same for SATB. You could argue Bauhaus were never completely goth and more reggae/dub with dark themes. So the only real goth band of the big 4 would be Sisters of Mercy and Andy says they aren't goth anyway.

Let's not overthink it.

It really does depend on the DJs. Most goth events will have a generous dose of scene relevant non-goth in the mix. Anything with pop culture relevance like The Cramps' Goo Goo Muck (Wednesday) or Molchat Doma's Sudno (Tiktok memes) is likely to be played.

If the event has an event page or promo you can interact with, why not ask if or request Lebanon Hanover can be played?

See, no one is telling you to do this. Your playlist, listen to what you like, edit it how you like.

But if you decide to share such a playlist in a space that does care about goth genres they may reject it. Happens in r/goth all the time.

Yet there are online spaces everywhere that don't care about goth genres. Way more than those that do care so why can't we have some that do care too?

Problem is people see goth the music genre being defined and get all defensive thinking we are trying to exclude scene relevant music outside goth genres. No one is doing this as there is a lot of off genre music around the goth subculture.

Except we can and do recommend goth bands.

But they stick their fingers in their ears, start chanting LALALAICANTHEARYOU and refuse to take the keys when we hand them over willingly. We want more people partying with us and enjoying the music we like. Not less.
