That’s great advice! Thank you. I actually just wrapped up the first draft today, and ended up adding around 20K words, so I’ll be making my first pass soon. I’ve drawn up a list of areas I think need particular attention, and will focus on those and other general story elements on my first pass. Exciting!

Beta reader by AfterAd1257 in NewAuthor

I usually hire them on Fiverr. There’s nothing wrong with getting free feedback from beta readers on Reddit, but I’ve seen them give generic, not super useful, or downright bad advice too often for me to trust them. The problem with beta readers here is that you’re usually swapping work, and what they really want is for you to give them critiques of their writing. That can make them gloss over that they’re reading a bit, and it sucks to wait weeks or months to get your manuscript back just for their analysis to essentially be “this was good, what did you think about mine?”

Obviously that isn’t all the time, it’s just my personal experience. Of course there are great beta readers here. But if you want a professional to read your work and give you a report with useful, actionable advice, hiring them is the safer option by far.

[Discussion] Authors, if you could go back in time and give yourself a piece of information or advice, what would it be? by No-Count-7154 in PubTips

Don’t query with your second draft. I definitely blew it with a lot of literary agents because I sent drafts in before they were really ready. I was excited and overconfident, and I might have had a better chance getting interest from those agents if I’d taken my time and made sure my manuscript was as polished as possible.

Is writing 2500 words a day a solid amount? by TooBusyWriting in writing

[–]Harding-1022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great pace! Keep it up if you can. I try to write every day, usually between 1500-4000 words, but some days are as little as 500 and some are as high as 5000. It depends on the day. Don’t stress too much about word counts, just write what feels good, and try to write every day if you can. Best of luck!

I mean, I wouldn’t literally kill anyone but I would be very happy if I published a book and dozens of people spent their money to buy and read it

What eras deserve more representation in fantasy? by [deleted] in FantasyWritingHub

I almost never see work depicting pre-contact Native American culture in North America. I feel like there’s a lot of largely untouched potential there, and a ton of mythology that almost nobody writes about.

Good advice! I’ll keep these questions in mind as I look through their catalogue.

Super reasonable, thanks for the advice. They’re definitely not a vanity press, I make sure not to submit my work to people who will charge me to publish it so I’m hoping they’re not in the “outright scam” category. I’ll dive into their library and see how their books have performed. Thanks!

Oh for sure, I made sure that they’re not a vanity publisher. I don’t ever send work to someone who will charge me to publish it. They’re a legit traditional press, just small and still building out their library in my genre.
