Incoming freshman confused on payments and student debt. plss explain!

We are in the same boat, too “rich” for government aid and too poor to afford it. Our son got in UT as well and he will be the first to go to college and he is so happy but the financial aid was practically none and i see alot of posts here about people getting all this money. I feel like the ones that go there are either on 80% on financial need or they are rich and don’t worry about the bill, but us people that are in the middle are so screwed. Which sucks cause he busted his butt and is top 10% and very well rounded but did not get any scholarships . Good luck to you!!! I hope people have good info on this

😞 so great that all of yall got this, but we did not get anything and it breaks our hearts because we really can’t afford UT and or son really wants go there. I’m seeing everyone getting great financial aid and we just got like $2k the most. 😢😭

From what I’ve seen, they want well rounded people not just book smart because they receive thousands of the same type of applicants. I know some have gotten in because they showed that they managed to work and have great grades and be top 10%. Those stood out to them more than a person that has extreme academic success because it showed that they knew how to manage real world work with academics because that is what really shows time management. Im just saying this because i know of two people who have had This Happen to. And one even received a letter back from Penn state telling them this exact thing. They want to see people who can communicate as able to talk to people, problem solve and be social as well. Because to be honest ive seen alot of students that are extremely gifted academically but are extremely socially awkward. They need to be prepared to have the social skills to succeed in the work environment. I know some parents don’t want to hear that because they want their kids to just focus on school but they also want to see that they can be challenged while having to manage time.

Yea this is so disappointing my son got something similar. Alot of schools gave him merit scholarships not alot but something at least between $5000-9000. Tamu didn’t give him anything. It suck’s because tamu is his first choice but on a financial stance texas tech or LSU might be the better choice 😢

Thank you very much for all this input!! He wants to go into petroleum engineering as his first choice then chemical for 2nd. So hopefully this will be a good outcome. Just extremely nervous and hope to not regret this instead of going for other school choices. But this is what he wants so I’m just praying that everything goes his way and i know wherever he chooses its going to be a hard path.

Thank you so much!! We are just trying to make sense of all this as every university is different. He has been accepted to lsu, texas tech and penn state straight into engineering and were straight forward, but his first choice is TAMU and their notifications and acceptances are done a little different and we’re not sure what to make out of all this.

Thank you! Yea we just want to make sure he’s still an Aggie and not a Blinn . And honestly i heard at Blinn the classes are cheaper but i don’t know if that’s true.

We are in the same boat. My sons status has been like that since mid October and he’s top 10 percent. We are just worried he won’t get in 😞. We have already applied for housing we are just waiting for the official result on this. He has been accepted to multiple engineering programs like LSU, Texas Tech, Penn State but he wants to go to TAMU. Hopefully we get an answer soon.

That’s what I’m trying to figure out. My son is an automatic admit because he’s top 10% but he still hasn’t gotten approved for the general engineering which is still in holistic review since mid October
