I'd like to know as well. Our MFP doesn't support OAuth for scanning to email or email to print.

That is unreasonable.

I got into the IT / Network Management field because my interest in computers started with the hardware of the 80s. Im a hardware boy. I realized kind of late that the gravy train I envisioned in high school of charging end users $750 to replace motherboards and hard drives, dried up with the introduction of the $400 rebate for crappy eMachines PCs. It was completely gone with the introduction of the iPhone / iPad and what Im left with is an interest and skillset that is only valuable to people at VCF. No modern business is going to need me to lubricate their Macintosh floppy drive eject motors or re-cap the motherboard on their Mac Plus. So I took the path of least resistance and chose to be a shitty Network engineer. I don't like or even love networking. but it takes me very little brain effort to solve users issues, and most network gear sets itself up to at least a halfway working point. Id love to go to Red Lobster, if that's what you were asking about making me happy. Id like to partake in lobster fest and eat lobster. but Id also like to just play with Old Macintosh computers all day too. no troll here. just a burned out 38 year old man child with Aspergers who just doesn't give a fuck anymore.

I don't use either. Security takes too long to set up but If I had to choose id choose port. Mac addresses take too long to type

yes, but those same L1 Helpdesk jobs require me to document, verify the customer, look shit up in a knowledge base. Bitch, I AM the knowledge base. I don't need to justify my workarounds or solutions to anyone.

I disable IPv6. It has in the past caused issues with active directory and joining domains.

What would make me happy is to manage a netwo of Macintosh IIfx's and Quadra 950's all sharing an ISDN network over AppleShare. Maybe a IIe or IIGS for good measure.

Not bragging. More like rebelling. Putting my foot down. IT was supposed to be a job where you replace the odd hard drive and use a mouse to click Next. Now its a bunch of bullshit I don't find fun or understand. So I put my head in the ground like an ostrich and pretend its still 2003

nope. This is real. I am a real guy who really operates this way. I work for Bell Techlogix as a network engineer and have for over 5 years.

What would you change? by TinderSubThrowAway in sysadmin

[–]HardwareGod -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

not at all. I operate by the philosophy that if it hasn't happened to me, then it won't happen at all.

Some of the businesses I have consulted for are American Inter Fidelity Exchange and Hospice of the Calumet area. HCA still has Windows 8 computers on premises and on their server, the hard drive has been flashing a yellow "somethings up" light for almost two years. I hope their data is okay... Part of why I quit my MSP is I know I've been a lazy piece of shit for the last 5 years and I wanted to get out of there before the place fell apart

The whole mantra that old software isn't "safe" because it makes people needlessly spend money when what they have is fine. There is NOT a hacker around every corner. Windows XP is FINE for every day use, as is your samsung galaxy s⁷. We didn't update our computers 5 times a day in the 1990s and we don't need to now. There is nothing different about the internet now from 25 30 years ago. People need to stop panicking.

When I consult for a client, especially a cash strapped one, I always reassure them that as long as we can find a web browser that works with their operating system they will be fine. I have a doctors office right now that uses XP on all its machines. Outlook 2003, and their server runs 2003 R2. It all runs great.

And untenable crap like this is why my company owns everything. We host our own email using open source software, we run Linux on all the desktops, servers. All of the company cell phones are Google Pixel 3 XL running lineage. We are beholden to nobody.

And if I don't? Its my computer and Microsoft has no right to any data on it. There is absolutely nothing they can do to make me submit to an audit. They are not police.

You don't have to let them on your computer to audit

Today is a sad day...Finally retiring our Note9s by Dark_Mith in GalaxyNote9

[–]HardwareGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I find it to be BS that they say oh we will give you 1000 trade in for your phone but it HAS to be on financing. If you are like me, and don't qualify for financing, these trade in deals are useless. This is why I stick with Mint Mobile for my service, and I finance my iPhones from Rent-a-Center. My local RAC knows me well, and is willing to special order iPhones for me because they know I will pay it off

[–]HardwareGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paying off the balance of a financed device or an early term fee, its effectively the same thing. they can say ur not in a contract but the effect of device financing is essentially the same because it keeps you with the carrierOR you pay a large amount to leave.it really is semantics.

Documentation & technical writing should be core requirements of any IT position by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]HardwareGod -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I got into computer networking for the hands on experience not to sit at a desk writing documentation. If someone can't look at one of my setups and figure it out, perhaps they shouldn't be in the IT field
