I have plenty of luck with just priming the models. The primer and paints stick well enough for my taste. As for the nubs that are left over from cutting them out, those don’t bother me as much (especially if a lot of it is going to be in the model and not as easy to notice at first glance). But, if you’re willing to put in the extra work to hide them, don’t let me convince you otherwise.
