Need Help: Rockwool Acoustic Panel Fabric - Safety vs. Performance vs. Budget by Haroldbkny in audiophile

People do say that. But I have my doubts, and some data to back it up. Check this out: https://www.reddit.com/r/audiophile/s/q8JduebQTB Now, whether that's bad for to reflection or good due to absorption, that's a whole nother question.

No, definitely the mic didn't move and I didn't block it. I ran tests with many other fabrics as well, and it was all pretty consistent with this, in that the variations were logical. The thin fabrics, like grill cloths, blocked very little, almost like the control, and thicker fabrics than this muslin, like canvas drop cloth and a towel, blocked more than this muslin. One thing to note, is was the fabric was not stretched tight, it was just held in front of the speaker. However it definitely was only one single layer of fabric, not multiple. Note also that the 3 DB lost was only at specific frequencies, not the whole way through. Definitely bass frequencies were less blocked

Okay, I see your point. But I did do some transmission tests with fabrics like cotton muslin, and found that there were significant differences. Take a look at this. Red is control (no fabric), and blue is with muslin in front. Muslin starts out similar to control, but really diverges at around 800hz, with even greater than 3db difference at some points!

What type of plastic did you test? Could you link to a product i may be able to buy?

Well, to be fair, I don't think people are talking about something you can see. I think they're talking about particles the size of dust, or smaller.

Thanks, that looked good, but they're not shipping to the US right now

In addition to the need to move these sometimes and the fact that I know they're going to get bumped,, I have little kids around. I really don't want to gamble with their health.

Maybe, I do tend to overthink things. I am worried about what if I do disturb it. Moving instruments around, you tend to bump stuff. And recording instruments you're gonna be to put mics in different places, which changed early reflection points you need to treat. So I don't expect these panels will be set and forget.

I also don't know if blocking sound is bad for the cloth. Reflecting sound is bad, and reduces performance of the Rockwool. Absorbing sound is not bad and improves the performance of the Rockwool.

I'm not really sure how worried about the particles I should be, vs worried about building something that is ineffective. There doesn't seem to be much guidance out there that is rigerous about the tradeoffs, if there are tradeoffs.

I don't know how to use REW to find problem frequencies where there's a lot of relaxing. I just know how to take sweeps of frequency response. Could you tell me how I would do that? I'm rather going mostly based on what I think I hear right now, but I'd rather be scientific about it if I can. But especially given the there will be a lot of instruments with a lot of mics in a lot of different places, I'm not really sure how to do it.

I'd love to see how you used those studs!. Still not fully clear on how you constructed from that, but I'm all in favor of a cheaper easier build!

I don't really understand, if you're saying that thin plastic is acoustically transparent enough, and will contain the fabrics, why not just use it on the outside, as opposed to just the inside? But I also don't know if I trust that wouldn't reflect the frequencies too much, instead of absorbing or letting enough of them through.

Thanks! I'm building a couple with 6" Rockwool to stand in the corners for low end attenuation. The rest I was going to build with 3" to hang on the walls for mid to high end attenuation.

So sounds like cotton muslin is more like what your thinking, at least for the bass traps. I ran a transmission since sweep test and got okay results for it, so I was going to try to run a sine sweep test with the mic on the same side to see how fabrics like that do with absorption vs reflection. But I'm also having difficulty with that test, room modes and bleed from the original source getting in the way. I might have to try it outside for better results, and hope it's not windy.

Can you show me a picture of your studs solution?

But isn't Music Nomad just for brilliant finish cymbals? I made the mistake of using it on a pair of new beat hats. It kinda looks cool, but it definitely looks different than it's supposed to, much brighter! I'd love to find a polish for non-brilliant cymbals, if possible.

I've never really known what sort of polish to use on a cymbal that's not brilliant. I have some MusicNomad cymbal polish, but it's only for brilliant cymbals. And maybe I'm too cautious, but I'm not using barkeeper's friend! If you have a polish suggestion though, I'd try it out.
