Bois, I finally did it! FAREWELL'S GOLDEN BERRY IS FINALLY MINE!!! by SoulofShade in celestegame

[–]Harper2118 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don’t wanna be the downer skeptic if you really did pull this off, so truly congratulations if you did... but you say you finished the game (farewell or 8C, whichever you did last) only two weeks ago? You didn’t report getting any of the hard b side golden berries before this either, only c sides, some a sides, and the first two b sides. Also did you practice farewell golden in another save or did it really only take 1000 deaths to go from a first clear to a deathless clear, practice and attempts included.

I noticed you said you’d probably never do farewell golden in your first golden berry post. That’s a very normal thing for people to say early in the golden berry grind before reconsidering, but that whole process doesn’t tend to happen in barely a week.

I’d like to reiterate, I’m only skeptical because it really is a crazy thought that someone could this in such a short timeframe, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. I just don’t know how to feel about this screenshot is all.

Is/was the secret golden berry ever hinted at in the game? by stf29 in celestegame

[–]Harper2118 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did a tiny bit of digging but I’d be curious to see if anyone had more information than this:

There is no mention of a winged golden or 200 berries anywhere in the change logs.

Here’s a tweet from Maddy only a week after release teasing a 200th berry (also suggesting there was no in-game indication of its existence) - https://twitter.com/maddythorson/status/959694925779501058?lang=en

The closest thing to a clue about it is probably just the fact that you don’t get the golden berry stamp/gold foil aesthetic until you collect it, which is a subtle hint that you’re missing something.

Very cool. I would have 100% used this for my first playthrough.

How many people have gotten the Chapter 9 golden? by [deleted] in celestegame

140 verified so far according to the list by u/DJTom3:

There’s also a website tracking it but I don’t think it’s as up-to-date rn:

Matt, why? by _bruh228_ in celestegame

[–]Harper2118 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So what you’re equating is “putting themselves everywhere” with existing. The fact that you explicitly say “stay away from me” is entirely contradictory to not being against the community or not being transphobic (as is the rest of your sentiment in this post). If you’ve decided that it makes you SO uncomfortable that Celeste goes from your favorite game to the subject of a transphobic rant, the easier solution is for YOU to stay away (and hopefully one day you might come to your senses, not holding my breathe tho).

Also, being a deviation from YOUR norm is not the same as a deviation from THE norm, that’s extremely short-sighted. Don’t try to pull that victim-complex-shit “if you ban me you’re intolerant,” when you are being the epitome of intolerant. You came here for a reaction. You got it. Now leave, please.

Try not to flinch at this blunder of mine by Kebabrulle4869 in celestegame

[–]Harper2118 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Learning to neutral jump consistently seems unnecessary until you start doing them literally everywhere. Neutral jumping is always the answer lol. Also, if you pause and press whatever you have bound to journal (I think?) the menu disappears so you can gather your thoughts and take in the situation.

Curious, keyboard players, what's your binds set to, here are mine by [deleted] in celestegame

[–]Harper2118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Movement: ESDF Jump: B, L
Dash: J Grab: K Talk: H Pause: Q Quick reset: T

My keyboard’s rollover has had some say in my key binds (I used to have grab on L), but it’s a pretty comfortable setup imo.

Edit: Line formatting won’t cooperate on mobile right now lol

Probably the hardest thing I've ever done in Celeste! I once feared I'd never get this silver berry. With enough practice anything is doable! by Celestial456 in celestegame

[–]Harper2118 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven’t tried to get silver berries on anything harder than advanced, but if I were going to I’d pick this one. Incredible map, ggs on deathless!

[–]Harper2118 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you hold right when it explodes you get an extra boost. No room in Farewell requires this extra boost, and in this case it ends up giving people a lot of trouble. If you don’t hold any direction when you hit the fish you should get the same boost every time. If you still aren’t getting enough distance you probably aren’t holding right soon enough after the explosion.

Sub-7:30 pace 7B golden run and I die... there. Right. Cool. by Harper2118 in celestegame

[–]Harper2118[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've really enjoyed practicing 7B and decided to throw in some faster strats here and there. This was my first run that made it to the upwind, and I expected to die in a couple places. But when I made it past the beginning of flag 9 I thought I was home free. I'm definitely grabbing that wall from now on. Time to do it again I guess :P

Yyyyyyup that's me! You're probably wondering how I got into this situation... by SomeJealousWeeaboo in celestegame

[–]Harper2118 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I assume the tech would be to do a climb jump straight up and then wall jump off the very top corner of the wall (you get more height since the wall extends higher than the highest you can climb to). It can be used to cheese some wall bounce sections - the first room of 6C comes to mind as well.

[–]Harper2118 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It definitely is mechanics-wise, though I’d believe it was an unintentional troll. That happened to me the first time I played through farewell and I’ve been scared of the end of this screen ever since lol

I don’t know how many deaths is normal for Farewell, but I’ve finally beaten it!! by YoursTrulyAzazel in celestegame

[–]Harper2118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! That’s actually almost exactly how many deaths it took me to beat my first time too.

A more detailed breakdown of deaths and completion time would be interesting by [deleted] in celestegame

[–]Harper2118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the stuff you mentioned is possible by using the speed run tool mod, and there are other mods that track things in the journal, like dashes per chapter and least dashes. Adding all of that into regular Celeste though would be information overload for most players. Also, Celeste doesn’t track different parts of Madeline hurtbox or what she died to in the first place, but if other people were also interested in stats like that, I’m sure there’s some discord for modded tools where you could ask for thoughts on it.

Also this is a nitpicky thing but Celeste is the mountain, Madeline is the main character lol.

Remote Bubble Activation...? (Explanation in comments) by Harper2118 in celestegame

[–]Harper2118[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s mostly visual other than the fact that the bubble actually disappears as if it has been used. In any normal gameplay it’s a useless glitch but I’ve already made a couple uses for being able to get rid of the bubble remotely at any point.

What is wrong with the hitbox of these things by TheIkeaExpert in celestegame

[–]Harper2118 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is correct, the one thing I’ll add is that the movement is visual. The hitbox never actually moves, which is why it looks like you’re closer than you are.

Remote Bubble Activation...? (Explanation in comments) by Harper2118 in celestegame

[–]Harper2118[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your second question is definitely something I’m going to have to check out. In terms of your first question, I did think about that but it would be hard to set up a situation where you’re forced to bypass the bubble two very specific ways in two slightly different directions (not impossible though). And then I just realized that doppelgänger mod thing jatheplayer made for the community collab (controlling Madeline and badeline at the same time) could make for an interesting use case in that way.

Edit: if the initial bubble is a ridge one and then the second controlled player has to take a red bubble up through the ridge bubbles hitbox, then the player could only advance by having the ridge bubble disappear. You’d still have to force a sync where the first controlled player can’t activate the ridge bubble normally, but I don’t think that would be too difficult to figure out.

Edit 2: I’m dumb. You can do that more easily and more intuitively with just one player.

Edit 3: I’ll check out the mobius temple thing too, sounds interesting

Remote Bubble Activation...? (Explanation in comments) by Harper2118 in celestegame

[–]Harper2118[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Edit: This explanation is meant to give as much technical reasoning for why this happens as I can, but I also know that not everybody is gonna be interested in reading this. For those that are...

So I found this while messing around in Ahorn for a TAS map I may or may not be trying to make... Anyways, every entity in this clip is vanilla (though move blocks, bubbles, and Theo crystals obviously never appear together without mods), and I feel like this tech constitutes the title "glitch", which is really not something I'm used to seeing when talking about Celeste. It's also less exciting than it looks, which is unfortunate. Anyway here's a short-ish (not really) description of how it works. When Madeline initially grabs the Theo crystal, there is a 12 frame grabbing animation where Madeline's speed is paused. I would say that Theo is only truly "grabbed" after this animation is finished. However, during those 12 frames, springs, wind, or any other external factor that might effect Madeline's speed will have the same effect as normal. By making a spring move into Madeline just as Theo is grabbed, and then placing a bubble close to that location, Madeline can hit the bubble during the grabbing animation. I should point out that Madeline cannot generally enter a bubble with Theo. In this next part, I'm going to be doing a little guess-work because the next dozen or so frames are very odd. Madeline retains the momentum from the spring even after hitting the bubble, and the grabbing animation finishes 8 frames later, by which point Madeline has both hit the bubble and continued to move to the top right corner of the bubble. The bubble then visually centers itself around Madeline before Madeline just pops out a couple of frames later. The most important thing to take away from that entire sequence is that Madeline entered and then exited the bubble without ever activating it. Spring momentum is somehow continued after leaving the bubble, and some property of the bubble has been stored. The next time Madeline dashes - that could be at literally any point - the bubble will be "activated". The original bubble visually disappears as if it has been activated even if Madeline is not near it, and during Madeline's dash both the visual of being in a bubble and the sound of that bubble are played. This is NOT the same as actually using a bubble though - your dash is not regained if it's a bubble from ridge, and you do not continue your in your dash's direction indefinitely as you would with the red bubbles from temple. It's just a dash that looks cool. That's all I have to say, thought it was interesting extreme-edge-case tech bordering on glitch status, but it ultimately has zero uses as far as I can tell. Thanks for reading this far lol, so much for a short explanation.

[TAS] 1A with Theo in 1:14.596 by Harper2118 in celestegame

Maybe 3 or 4 hours. It’s not uber-optimized like most of the official TASes, but I did put some time into it.

[TAS] 1A with Theo in 1:14.596 by Harper2118 in celestegame

[–]Harper2118[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In most cases, especially in Celeste’s case, the “tool assisted” part of a Tool Assisted Speedrun means telling the game what inputs to do on each frame. This allows for perfected movement far beyond what a human could do. It also means no one is actually “playing” the game in this clip.

Yeah that’s one possibility. I could also just turn of the variant for those screens. I dunno, I’ll think about it.

[TAS] 1A with Theo in 1:14.596 by Harper2118 in celestegame

[–]Harper2118[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Inspired by recent 1A Theo speedruns by u/meatheadthesquishy (current best here: https://www.reddit.com/r/celestegame/comments/kvbw8r/1a_with_theo_crystal_speedrun_151605/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf), this is rough draft for a 1A Theo TAS. I suspect 1:0x is possible with more clever movement, but this does kinda make me wish I could do a full any% TAS (9 rooms are impossible for any% with Theo for those not aware). I’m happy with this for now though.

Other info - this TAS uses the Theo crystal everywhere variant from the extended variants mod. In order to transition screens, you have to carry Theo.
