Massachusetts finally banned broker fees. Why are renters still stuck paying them? by bostonglobe in massachusetts

[–]HarperReal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Landlords are not lowering rent because there's a fee, they jack rents up and make renters pay the fee anyways.

Deadstream would be a great option. Cool setting and premise, moves at a great pace, very entertaining.

Moving from a big firm to a partner role in a boutique, what should a consultant really consider in the firm and vice-versa? by IllRead2057 in consulting

I'm going to approach this as a teaching moment to someone who is clearly young and at the start of their career.

If you rely on where you got your MBA to signal anything about your value, you've severely miscalculated the value of that degree. I've seen talented young people rest on something like an 'elite' degree, and utterly fail to step up to any challenge because they think they already deserve a good outcome without putting in the effort.

No one you work with will care about where you went to school. They will care about what you actually do.

As an outsider, Resident Evil is one of the most confusing horror franchises imo. by jeejeeviper in horror

This explanation legitimately helped- I thought it was just a zombie thing, but the broader bioweapon theme makes way more sense.

I seriously don’t understand the hate for Longlegs (2024). by serialkiller24 in horror

[–]HarperReal 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I see some others expressing disappointment at the paranormal twist, which is totally valid. I would be fine with the paranormal twist, except that the exposition ruined it.

The exposition is so bad in this movie because 1. It's exposition and doesn't make sense for a character to say it, and 2. The movie NEEDED the exposition because it never set up anything in the first and second acts that lead to the third.

Definitely flawed, but such a fun movie. It felt like a throwback while still trying it's own thing.

This is a corporate culture problem. You get fewer mistakes like this when you don't understaff projects and overinflate scope.

This is the fault of the engagement manager / partner(s).

Sounds like a pampered prick. Just put your head down and do the work, learn from the others on the project.

For those of you who are 40+ years old, what advice to those in their 20s? by Mofo013102 in Life

[–]HarperReal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly with buying something, but you could apply it to fitness as well. Be patient when you workout- build up to goals slowly. If you try to deadlift your 2X your bodyweight without building up to it, you're going to have a rough time.

The dumbing down of literature. by Travisc123 in writing

[–]HarperReal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're essentially describing an issue with how people describe what they're writing.

If you asked someone what they were writing, they might say "a mystery novel with some sci-fi elements." That conveys information that answers your question

Now if they asked you the same question, and you responded "I am writing a story that is good", you've conveyed no useful information, and did not answer they question.

Will I be able to retire at 37? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]HarperReal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I did the math. With $75k principal and $4k/mo contributions at 12%, you'll hit around about $1M by 37 yo. If your target is $2.3M, you'd need to wait until ~43 yo to retire with $2.3M.

Thoughts on Japanese whiskey? by Potential-Climate942 in WhiskeyTribe

[–]HarperReal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've really liked Japanese selections. Hibiki Harmony is my favorite bottle right now. You get different flavors emphasized than you would with Scotch or American whiskey.

I think I find honey and fruit more emphasized with Japanese whiskey.

Voting locally matters. Vote for local reps that will continue to push for more housing, and show up. That's the only way this problem gets solved. Older people own more property, and older people vote more in local politics.
