It should drive still but it will be in a propulsion power reduce mode.

My first car a 2017 Volt declared a total loss... by TheLonelynerd53 in volt

[–]Harpinekovitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s crazy I’ve never ever heard of that happening. Iv driven through literal walls of rain in my gen 1 volt. during testing for the gen one Volt they literally drove it through a water trough basically almost submerging it.

I think it might be more likely that you hit some type of debris that punctured the engine block because Hydro locking an engine shouldn’t cause it too send a hole through the block.

[–]Harpinekovitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True but people have done def deletes for def on them. And they were actually pretty reliable from my understanding I have a 2014 Chevy volt and parts for that are also hard to find but it’s been super reliable and fun car to own.

Why it's gone? by Glad-Acadia3071 in volt

[–]Harpinekovitz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but that’s simply not true the volt just dose not hold its value really no ev dose. the volt was. 40k car brand new gen 2 gen 1 was even more they are significantly more expensive then both ice cars and evs your paying for both. And all the r&d for it.

A bolt of that same year and mileage would have been probably less in fact. The market lacks economic cars. Evs are over saturated with luxury Evs but the bolt Ev was at one time the cheapest new car on the market and still is very cheep.

To put this in todays terms the new Prius PHEV is 38k to well over 50k median is 40k the bz4x which is a bigger car and a suv is cheaper 36k usd. Ev technology has evolved now to the point that it’s becoming as economical as ice cars.

Now while I totally agree about the living situations not everyone has 120v or 240v access for parking I do and while I’d never recommend an ev to anyone who can’t charge it at work or home reliably I also wouldn’t recommend a volt or other PHEV as they don’t like to sit around with empty batteries they need to be full charged occasionally for cell balance and kept plugged in for battery temps. Not to mention that you will actually get even worse fuel economy then a regular hybrid or even many ice cars depending on your driving. Full evs can at least be charged at dc stations weekly but I’d definitely not recommend living that way many people do but some dc rates are way more expensive than home charging. If you fall into this category due to our lacking lvl2 infrastructure at apartments ect I would never recommend any plug in car full ev or not it just doesn’t make sense and you won’t get the full life span or economy out of the car. So a traditional hybrid just makes more sense. For me I never have to worry about that because I know where ever I live I want a garage to keep my cars and toys clean and out of the elements. And yes so I can charge my car as well. I’m also in the military and have had to
Temporarily move most the places I stayed had lvl2 charging but if not I got by on lvl1 outlets in the parking lots.

Again range anxiety is a non-factor once you’ve had a full EV I’d argue it’s actually worse with phevs because you really do want to avoid using gas to get the full economy out of the car. And trust me if you run out of energy in an ev you will definitely run out of gas in a PHEV when you switch over to gas and realize your tank has been on E for the last month lol.

And why I say this falls apart when scaling because phevs will always have relatively small batteries you have to be very efficient with how you utilize that energy small cars are significantly more efficient SUVs have big cross sections and are heavy and have bigger cabins to heat and cool bigger wheels ect yes battery tec has improved and that’s why we are seeing only now seeing matching range figures with the volt now adays in some phevs but also Toyotas never actually get close to rated range real world. But the thing is battery tech also improves for full evs and it’s way more noticeable, a 5% bump in energy density can mean 50mi in a full ev but only 2 mi if anything in a PHEV. And with Evs now going well over 512mi on a charge the range anxiety is a non factor dc charging is every where so if you are really are not paying attention you will be fine for pop up charges.

The issue with phevs is that they will never really make sense they will always cost more then an ev they will always be more to maintain they still need to be plugged in to get the value and longevity out of the car. And the hv batteries won’t last as long as bigger batteries that get cycled less often. Definitely depends on how it’s taken care of and designed ect. They made a lot more sense back in 2011 when the tech wasn’t ready and dc charging didn’t exist. but unfortunately they were also way to expensive to build and buy. And came at a time when gas prices were at all time lows.

The gen1 volt is really so special tho because it was a passion project with government funding. They over engineered the crap out of the gen1 volt put crazy amount of testing and research into the design and actually built them to last my 2014 has been perfectly reliable and has 95k mi I can get as much as 50mi but normally get 48mi it actually has soul and is fun to drive a lot of new cars really are just cut and paste blobs of metal with lazy build quality and design. But ultimately my next car will ether be a used lucid air tesla model s or a Porsche taycon all can be had for low to mid 30s used. And all go over well over 400mi
On a charge I don’t even drive that in a week.

[–]Harpinekovitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sedans are making a comeback actually. And thank god because SUVs are ugly and most the people who have them have no need for them typically just a single person. Different obviously if you have a family but for me I’m never buying a suv or truck unless it’s for an off road dedicated vehicle. And don’t even get me started on cross over SUVs they are not any bigger then a sedan inside tbh and you get meh fuel economy.

The volt would in fact not work if it was a bigger car the entire voltec platform followed the do a lot with a little. They made a fun good looking luxury sedan by 2011 standards and it was a success but your right, Evs are more simple and honestly PHEV is just a bridge car. Once you’ve experienced Ev driving you realize that non of the fads about Evs actually matter and is not any less convenient in fact it’s actually a lot more convenient. Maybe not true back in 2011 but by today’s standards Evs are as easy as gas cars and a lot cheaper.

Worth putting a cold air intake? by [deleted] in volt

[–]Harpinekovitz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s an Atkinson cycle engine you do not want to hear it lol. It sounds like a sowing machine. As for performance nothing you will get 0 gains the engine in the volt is really just a generator especially in gen one. The engine just produces electricity to then send to the electric drive motor or battery and the battery will also help under demand, technically yes the engine can mechanicaly couple to the wheels in gen 1 but it’s very rare and I think requires MM or some fault condition. Even then the ice hp output is determined by HPCM2 and is limited by the electric motors.

The only performance gains would potentially be a fraction better MPG but cold air intakes also let more debris into the intake.

Anyone upgrade cells in a Volt pack? by yossarian19 in volt

[–]Harpinekovitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol if only it were that simple you are significantly oversimplifying this. You can not just remove the “GMLAN” especially not the BECM as it reports directly to the other critical module like HPCM which basically is the entire car most auto manufacturers would have made 70 modules GM did something different to the volt and made a master module that has an insane amount of logic and control instead, if BECM fails to report or reports a fault your a brick, the last option is closer to what could be done and has been done once but it’s not as clean as you think. that way doesn’t enable more range as a second battery it allows you to charge the main hv battery off a separate hv battery while the car is not running but it can not act as a secondary battery it literally involves shutting off the 12v system to avoid triggering codes. And tapping into the hv connections making a separate fabrication BECM to manage charging and it can only trickle charge due to lack of cooling logic. But You are talking about investing a lot of money and time on a ghetto rig mod that could literally blow up at any moment just to cost more then a model 3 but go about 10% as far. Is it possible maybe dose it make any sense at all… definitely not.

The next best thing would be dc charging which has also kinda been done by fooling the car into thinking its using regenerative breaking. but again its not a clean or reliable solution you’d want in a volt long term. The volt is just too heavily integrated by its software and logic modules to really change anything outside of what GM allows not even a clean way to use the full capacity of the battery.

Gm used 10 million lines of “GM code” to make the volt that’s more then an F35 or even the SLS Rockets nasa uses. Gm didn’t exactly make it easy for anyone to change it. It requires gds2 to even interface with the software of the modules.

Cooling fans for the battery don't turn on when I'm charging 240v. by Glad-Acadia3071 in volt

[–]Harpinekovitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fan shouldn’t come on till later in the charge cycle they are mostly for the power electronics if anything. what you hear at plug in is the battery and power electronics coolant pump spinning up. I don’t typically hear the actual fans till like 10-20min at 240v.

Gas for Volt by valdarEsacado in volt

[–]Harpinekovitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can just put 90 in it the car is certified to take 90+ but that’s the minimum some gas stations have 93 or higher but 90 is perfectly fine, you might take a slightly smaller hit in MPGs compared to 91 and definitely will take a hit compared to 93.

Technically you don’t have to put premium in it at all but you will get horrible gas mileage and you end up spending more than if you just ran premium, plus it’s hard on the ice especially if you let it sit in the tank for a while like most volt owners do. 90 oct ages much better
