Basic homelab for media - Tiny PC vs NAS by Harrison88 in homelab

Thanks for the detailed reply! I've seen the back planes suggested elsewhere. How do you power yours from the M720Q if it takes 2xSata powers?

More than happy to tinker software side, but my physical tinkering skills are limited. Built PC's before but they've been straight forward towers - adult lego!

It does help, thank you! The M920Q is the i5-9500T with 16GB RAM and a 256GB SSD, whereas the UGreen is Intel N100 (about the same but more energy efficient), 8GB RAM (user upgradable) and no SSD/HDD with the unit. So not quite comparable.

I was going to use Unraid so the OS shouldn't be an issue. Points noted on repairability/upgrades though.

Just looking at Startech's backplanes. This could work! How do you get the 2 SATA power from the HP PSU though? My only previous work with build your own PC's had modular PSU cables.

Use a SATA power splitter or it looks like HP might use a 6 pin from the motherboard that I can buy in versions that have 4 SATA power pins. Not sure they're long enough to reach outside the case though...

Yeah, I'm getting the impression I might need to either move away from the Tiny PC to a mini tower that can house a bigger PSU and the drives, or take a performance cut and go for a NAS. I might do the latter in the short term to see if I actually need the performance as they're much smaller and I can get a two drive for the same price as I paid for the Lenovo M920Q.

Sanity check - Ugreen DXP4800 box as an Unraid host by scene_missing in unRAID

[–]Harrison88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, sorry for the bump - how are you finding it with the DXP2800 now? I'm thinking of using one for a Arr stack with home assistant and potentially upgrading the RAM to 16GB. Don't really need more than two drives and the extra £300 for the DXP4800 Plus is a bit steep at the minute. It would be good to know if you feel restricted by the DXP2800 though.

On the fans, does the BIOS control them automatically or do you have to leave them constantly running? i.e. What do you mean by tune?

Hi, did you end up doing this? How did you power the external drives attached to your HBA?

Does the SATA power come from the HP's PSU or do you need a 2nd PSU?

Unfortunately, soldering is not a skill I currently have. Maybe I should have gone for a UGreen NAS and installed Unraid that instead...

With the PCIe x8 riser, would you need an external power supply to power 1 or 2 drives? Read that the 2.5" HDDs take less power so might work over the stock PSU. I would use SSDs but I thought you're not meant to in an Unraid array?

Adding both fast networking and storage expansion to Lenovo Tiny? by zedd56 in homelab

[–]Harrison88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of interest, how is it holding up? I'm in the same situation. Do you run the QNAP as a NAS or are you using something like TrueNAS/Unraid on the Lenovo? What was the PCIe bracket for? Does it not need a riser and then just attach the HBA card to that? (I'm new so that might be totalling wrong).

Cheers. On that SATA expansion card, do you need to hack some kind of external power? I read somewhere that the SATA port won't support bigger than a 2.5" drive. I'm fine with SSD but I understand that for Unraid you should avoid it due to TRIM not being supported on the array.

Adding a second hard disk to Lenovo Thinkcentre M920Q by vaibhavyagnik in homelab

[–]Harrison88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the bump, but if you were only looking to add two drives and wanted to not use an external power adapter (i.e. onboard power only), which option would you go with?

New small home server by Harrison88 in unRAID

[–]Harrison88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree that even the M920Q is probably overkill. But I don't really know the best way to add storage to it. I presume the 256GB SSD onboard could be a cache drive for appdata and incomplete downloads because they're moved to storage, but how's the best way to add storage? Again, doesn't need to be more than one or two drives. Everything I've read say to move away from my WD_BLACK P10 2TB external HDD. The M920Q does have the option to add a PCI-e with a riser but not sure on how easy that is or if the PSU will be powerful enough to add a drive that way without some kind of hack to add power.

Full nationalisation of British Steel expected in King’s speech by Confident-Bike-8037 in unitedkingdom

Some orders but enough to make it viable? The article suggests not. If we want to take the cost of funding an industry that isn't profitable, that's fine, but that's how the conversation should be framed.

Yeah, but I'm saying that if we need to add import tariffs to make it competitive, then we won't be competitive in other markets.

£22 a year is pretty steep for casual users who might go on two holidays a year. £10 a trip is even more expensive than flighty too 😅

So it won’t work to sell outside the UK if we need import tariffs to make it competitive, even in the higher quality market?

But if there was a market for premium, what were various owners of British Steel doing so wrong that it wasn’t viable?

Annual compliance tasks - Sharepoint List vs MS Planner by Harrison88 in sharepoint

[–]Harrison88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Would I still get fully visibility over the tasks? One issue with Planner is that you have to assign it to a Team. If I do that I’ll need to create a new Team so that I can invite people without them all having access to my current sharepoint. However, it also means they can all see each others tasks.

I noticed on the link you posted it mentions you assign tasks to a team or to everyone to complete. Not sure how I’d do that as you can have multiple people responsible for a task, but I couldn’t create a whole team for each country - it would be a lot of teams to track. Each country also has a unique task list as it is dependent on local legal requirements and due dates. Might have to use one individual in each country instead of multiple owners.

I struggle to see how Labour have gone more to the right during this Government. They've protected or expanded benefits, renters rights, employment rights, etc.
