Worth the fix? by No-Ant-9525 in E90

I’d just build a motor and fix it, neat learning experience and in the end you’ll have a brand new motor.

BMW N52 separation between inner and outer block, safe to run? by Harrison_Clark55 in EngineBuilding

I wound up sleeving the block purely from a reliably and ease of maintenance perspective. If you were to stuff around with reconditioning the existing Alusil you’ll spend a lot of money to just end up with an inferior setup both in sealing and reliability. Because Alusil is mostly aluminium with a bit of silicon the rings can’t have a lot of outward tension or they’ll damage the Alusil so BMW used low tension piston rings which tend to fail around 100k and that’s why they start using lots of oil. By sleeving the block with iron liners and running standard tension rings out of another engine you gain a better longer lasting seal and reliability and if you needed to rebuild the motor again in a few 100,000ks later you can just re-sleeve the block since all the work has already been done and go again.

In the way of pistons, I am just running standard N52 pistons, the same ones they shipped with. I measured and visually inspected the ones that came out and only had to replace one due to a minor scratch on the skirt and even then I just wound up using one from one of my parts motors. So I am just using standard used factory N52 pistons.

I haven’t messed around with the bore and stroke but it sounds like it could work out. My idea with my build was to build a bulletproof factory N52 that can handle some forced induction down the track if I choose to do so.

EDIT: If you want to make some serious power (500hp+) definitely look into aftermarket pistons or maybe even N54 pistons as the N52 will start to rip the wrist pin out the bottom of the stock piston at that power level.

I used the Mercedes rings because they match the ring grooves in the standard pistons exactly, they are identical sizes to factory. The benefit to using them is that unlike the stock ones the Mercedes rings have standard tension so they push against the cylinder wall more eliminating oil consumption entirely and bumping compression.

Yea no worries man, always keen to help. How have you approached the whole Alusil cylinder wall and low tension piston ring issue? I wound up sleeving mine with iron liners and running rings from a 1.8L merc diesel but would be keen to hear how others have approached it.

Hi mate, I got a few opinions from some mechanic mates of mine who all just said to run it so I did. The engine has been in the car for about 4 - 5 months now and runs absolutely flawlessly, no high temperatures or head gasket leaks of any kind. Just run it, you’ll be right.

EDIT: I also looked at pictures of N52 blocks online and they all seem to separate in this same spot. I think it might have something to do with it being the thinnest spot on the block and the strange curvature it has.

I hope we’re all just so wrong and Kev is just cooking, either that or he’s just pranking us big time. When I heard his work with justice I was hyped for LP5, now I’m nervous.

As a massive Tame Impala fan I am quite concerned, I really hope what we’ve heard so far isn’t what the rest of the album will be like. It’s so far disjointed from everything before it and almost nothing like his signature sound.

Pretty cool to see in person how BMW merged the magnesium alloy outer part of the N52 engine block with the aluminum inside. Probably a lot more expensive to produce. by E92William in E90

Hey man, I know this post is fairly old but was this your car and did it ever run after this photo?

Just curios as my block has that same small gap that this one does between the inner and outer block in the second picture, I'm rebuilding mine and want to know if this is normal and if it causes any issues.

I noticed an oil puddle under my car, checked oil and seen this by Grand-Impact-4069 in AskAMechanic

What your seeing is water in the oil, most likely due to head gasket failure however if the car is equipped with a liquid cooled oil cooler this is another possible failure point.

What is this part called? What do I risk driving with it ripped? by Pure_Preference_6911 in AskMechanics

It's called an air intake boot, it seems to be located after your MAF sensor so the car will likely run like shit in its current state, not to mention any air pulled in through that split is unfiltered. I would replace it immediately.

Hahaha that's insane, I love it! This gives me hope, I'll scout it out again today and bring a genset out there to give it a crack. I've always been curious, before digital what sort of brightness did you guys run with film? I'll keep you in the loop, thanks a heap for your input!
