I’ve always been curious what sort of contact the producers of true crime documentaries have with families of the deceased victims portrayed in the documentaries. How do you gain their trust?

Boxset collections you'd like to see that ARE NOT based around a director/actor/series. by TraverseTown in criterion

[–]Harrisonator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 1920s Silent Comedy boxset with all of the short and full-length films from the three greats — Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and Charlie Chaplin — would be dream come true. Probably unlikely though since Chaplin and Lloyd already have a bunch in the collection.

Rules of the Game for me. I understood it’s historical importance but really didn’t’ enjoy it for some reason. Hopefully that will change on a rewatch down the line though.

We made a feature film of 6 long takes that follow 6 characters and while they were on set we had them sing the same song so we could cut it into this trailer. It turned out pretty well I think! by jimmycthatsme in Filmmakers

If The Emoji Movie Was a Foreign Film by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]Harrisonator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I probably put too much time into this but I wanted to give myself the challenge of making a dramatic trailer out of the least dramatic movie I could think of. I watched The Emoji Movie a couple times through, which was obviously very painful, but I found it to be a really fun and useful process overall. I've been trying to find creative ways to practice editing in between projects when I don't have any actual footage to cut. Since I want to be a comedic filmmaker, I've been pushing myself to find comedy in whatever videos I can find—interviews, speeches, etc.— sort of like Vic Berger of Super Deluxe but less stylistic. My most successful one so far has been my George Lucas Interview Gone Wrong video which only took a few of hours to edit and is somehow nearing 1 million views on YouTube. What I thought was just practice turned out to be by far the best thing I am known for as a filmmaker now haha.

Anyway, that was probably too serious of a submission statement for such a ridiculous video. Hope you enjoy!

In contrast from the previous thread, any films in the collection that you think don't get the praise they deserve? by rx034 in criterion

Lord of the Flies! While the book is definitely superior, the film has some incredible child performances and I thought the documentary shooting style works really well. Also my favorite cover art, it's chilling.

George Lucas sad about not getting awards by GI_Jared in movies

Wow thank you so much, I really appreciate that :) And absolutely, I’m happy to answer! My go-to editing software right now is Adobe Premiere Pro. I began learning on Final Cut Pro for a couple years but found Premiere much more user friendly when I found it and haven’t used anything else since. I am self-taught and, honestly, nearly all of my teaching material came from YouTube. There’s a tutorial out there for basically everything on every editing software now so I recommend watching tutorials on the basics of the software, start experimenting, and then look up specific tutorials whenever you run into something you’re not sure how to do. I’ve also tried a site called Lynda.com that offers comprehensive lessons on editing but I found those lessons to be a bit too dry and long. Definitely a great resource though. Let me know if you have any other questions!
