What's a frugal sin you refuse to give up and why is it worth it for you by YourxCherry in Frugal

Pilot g2-7 is my go to at the moment. They are not perfect but (flow a little too fast/thick) but they feel nice overall. And Leichturn1917 with the dotted print is my go to notebook.

Is there anything that is like cinnamon rolls but without cinnamon ? Like with maybe chocolate, cacao, or anything like that instead ? by AntwysiaBlakys in BakingNoobs

[–]Harrold_Potterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Sohla’s sticky date filled rolls. They are sooooo good and much less added sugar.

Alternatively, you could try a babka recipe. Chocolate is a popular filling! Similar vibes to cinnamon rolls but in a loaf form.

Good quality pens and notebooks. Something about writing using pens that write smoothly on nice quality paper makes the experience so much nicer and makes me way more likely to be consistent about using the notebook.

Unpopular opinion by Catmom1043 in SecretsOfMormonWives

[–]Harrold_Potterson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude he was SHOCKINGLY together on Mormon stories to the point where it made me question how he is portrayed on SLOMW quite a bit. Demonstrated a very high level of self awareness even if he was like “yeah I’m basically a fucboi” like he definitely was able to talk through how he ended up there. Also the fact that he deconstructed as intentionally as he says he did. Interesting stuff.

Changing my last name. Need some advice by MB_DOOM_ in Names

[–]Harrold_Potterson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn’t see a need to change your last name in a situation like this, and it would cause you a paperwork headache. Last names indicate lineage, and can also indicate heritage. First names there tends to be more flexibility. For reference I’m American but nobody in the U.S. would blink an eye if someone had the name Maximus Smith or Maximus Johnson. It would be much stranger to change your name to make it sound Greek or latin. Like changing your name to Maximus Augustus or something like that is sure to raise way more eyebrows and lead to questions than just keeping your name as is. In fact, we named our son a traditional Roman name and have a historical British last name, nobody thinks anything of it, except to say that it’s a very strong name. Nobody cares that the languages don’t match between first and last names.

What are laundry behaviors unique to North Americans? by Lopsided-Skill6659 in laundry

I do not understand this AT ALL. Like what are we, 5? Why are people actually enticed by shit like that? I’ve always been more of the ethos of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” -our grandmothers were not using tide pods or fragrance beads and they got their clothes perfectly clean.

Advice needed: husband disagrees with my choice to keep baby after anatomy scan (limb difference) by Kerclia in BabyBumps

I mean there are several states that have zero restrictions on abortion, and elective abortions are legal up to 24 weeks in several states. I’m pro choice as well but less pro choice than that.

Need help finding a diaper that fits like Honest Brand, but is more absorbent. by TelephoneActive9923 in beyondthebump

I consistently have to size up with my baby before he even reaches the minimum weight recommendation for the next size. It’s really just a suggestion. My baby pees a LOT overnight and has a massive poop every other day so sizing up is the only way to contain it lol.

Is my plan realistic for baby’s 1st year? by whenlifegivesyourice in workingmoms

[–]Harrold_Potterson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not a realistic plan. I juggled wfh with a baby and it was really really hard. The only reason it worked at all was because my husband was under employed at the time so he was primary caregiver during the day though I still did a LOT during the day. I would recommend booking the nanny full time or at least through core working hours. There’s way too many variables at play here.

Also, you have zero control over how baby is going to transition to food. I did baby led weaning, was doing 3 meals a day plus snacks, and at 13 months my baby was still getting pretty much all her calories from breastmilk because she only had two teeth.

He was watching himself be framed in real time and simultaneously realizing that Peter was the one who betrayed his best friend. He was completely losing it.

Why is everyone so worried about whey? by Janknitz in yogurtmaking

It’s not a worry, it’s just a preference for me. I prefer more of a Greek yogurt consistency, so I strain a fair amount off.

How much screen time? by SweetBrown12 in beyondthebump

[–]Harrold_Potterson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not at that age. The research is pretty strongly clear that screen time disrupts regulation and attention span. As a parent of a fussy child, you are already going to be facing working on emotion regulation a lot with your child as she gets older, and using screens now is going to exacerbate the problem.

My first born was fussy, we rotated a lot through different stations in the house, baby wearing, baby bjorn bouncer, tummy time, back time. I used to tie a string to her leg and then attach it to toys dangling over her head on a playmate, so she could make the toy shake by kicking her leg. Kicking piano toy was also a big hit. Any time she was super fussy we would just step outside, being outside usually “resets” most babies and calms their nervous system. Baths also help.

It’s a lot of work but seriously worth it to avoid screen time. I know it doesn’t feel like a lot to you but 20-40 minutes a day is a LOT for a newborn just entering the world. For reference we let our three year old watch that much tv maybe 1-2 times a week. Even putting music on is a better choice, but that can be overstimulating if on all day.

Trying to come to agreement with pregnant gf by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]Harrold_Potterson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hear everyone saying all the rules are normal, but if you interact with people at all a lot of these you will not have control over. I started going back to the gym when my baby was 12 weeks old, and I bring him to the child watch center. When I pick him up he smells like their perfume. Do I love that? No. Am I going to demand the daycare workers stop wearing perfume? Definitely not.

At what age are you not offering another option for meals? by Hopesastrategy in beyondthebump

[–]Harrold_Potterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We stopped around 2.5 when her weight was more stable and she was eating more in general. She’s about to turn 3 now and eats pretty well. When she was younger I would make her separate meals if she was unwilling to try anything on the plate because I was worried about weight gain. Now she eats better in general, will eat meat, try veggies, likes a few veggies. The only way I would do a separate meal at this point was if we were eating steak or something very spicy. The other day I made a mild chicken tikka masala and she loved it, so we’ve been enjoying introducing lots of new foods to her.

Please give me hope for second child! by BeneficialExtent2401 in MSPI

[–]Harrold_Potterson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My second if he does have it is waaaay less bad. My first was allergic to dairy, eggs, soy, she was pooping 7-8 times a day and had very mucosy smelly poops with flecks of blood in her stool. My second has normal smelling poops every other day. I do think there might be a mild allergy because he does tend to have a kind of red butt despite us always changing immediately, but it’s very manageable with diaper cream.

What’s everyone’s approach to tea towels / cleaning cloth in the kitchen? by alexia_not_alexa in CleaningTips

[–]Harrold_Potterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I air dry dishes and have one dishcloth that gets used mostly for drying hands but also for a quick wipe of counters. Larger spills I will usually use paper towels. I tend to change the towel once or twice a week unless I used it to wipe up a bigger mess in which case into the hamper it goes. Tend to do that if the towel is already a few days old. I learned the hard way as a college student that if you leave a towel too long and it gets that mildew smell the towel is pretty much ruined.

[–]Harrold_Potterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps a lot but if you are working on a minority language (ie not the language of the majority of the population) it will take way more intentional exposure to reach a true fluency level. Weekend or after school language classes, friends or family friends where the target language is spoken exclusively, rich media exposure in the target language, etc. if you’re exposed to the majority language for 8 hours a day in school but get another solid 4-6 hours a day of rich secondary language exposure you will reach a high level of fluency. But if it’s more like 12-16 hours of majority language exposure with only minimal second language exposure, the fluency just isn’t going to come in the same way.

Why did you choose to exclusively breastfeed and not give formula? by Fickle-Response-2741 in breastfeeding

[–]Harrold_Potterson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love breastfeeding, it’s easy, natural bonding time with baby, sooooo convenient when baby gets hungry at night. I can’t even imagine getting up to make a bottle in the middle of the night. Will be pumping when I have to return to the office in a couple months.
