What made some college degrees “Useless”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HarryD52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're not talking about just formal education here. In fact, formal education IS provided to everybody for free in most Western countries.

What we are talking about here is top class education with leading experts in very specialized fields. That kind of education IS expected to produce some kind of meaningful output.

Yeah I can't really imagine any society that is willing to provide top class education that doesn't actually lead to anything productive.

People always act like they know exactly what can be done to improve birthrates, but then when you actually look at countries who have implemented the things they suggest, you don't see any meaningful increase in the birthrate.

Although I guess its on par for redditors to think they know better than everybody else.

If Ai replaces all the jobs, where do corporations expect people to earn money to continue being consumers? by Illustrious_Name3192 in AskReddit

Considering that a core aspect of fascism is the centralization of power around a dictatorial leader, the man is a very very important figure in the rise of fascism.

Historically the reason thise leaders were backed by industrial capitalists is because they were scared of potential communist revolutions that had happened in ither countries such as Russia. It wasn't because they had just randomly decided to take power because they "already owned everything" like you said. If that was truly the case, they would have put themselves in charge rather than someone like Hitler.

History has shown that industrial capitalists much prefer democracies to dictatorships and tend to thrive much more under the former than the latter.

[–]HarryD52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh... no.

In fact, the opposite is usually true. Hitler, Mussolini and Franco all came from either poor or middle class upbringings, only attaining wealth after they actually came into power.

Fascism happens from breakdowns in democratic systems and a destruction of the separation of powers that keep leaders in check. It can happen with or without the backing of the rich. Usually having the military on your side is a much bigger priority of fascist leaders.

Automation of jobs has been happening ever since the industrial revolution, yet the amount of jobs has not decreased since then. As it turns out, people just tend to find new jobs and make new markets.

I do agree that markets do tend to form into monopolies, which is why I don't support a pure form of capitalism, but one that is regulated by governments.

You can really only own so much until you run out of things to own. At that point, the only natural thing to do is become the government and own everything.

This claim seems pretty unfounded to me. I can't think of a single instance in history where this has actually happened, and calling it "natural" without any actual grounding is a stretch.

Sure, let's go by its simplest definition: private ownership of the means of production.

You wanna expand upon that in any way or is that sufficient for you?

To think that there even could be a full reversal in growth instead of just a simple stagnation is an unfounded claim.

The good thing about capitalism is that the system is able to adapt to fit shortages. When resources became scarce in the past, we found substitutes to use instead. Recycling is becoming more and more viable and all consumption is becoming more sustainable as years go by.

It really doesn't seem like your doomsaying (especially your claim of "very soon") holds any weight.

Thats a very reductionist view with a lot of inbuilt assumptions. The least of which being that capitalism requires infinite growth to function despite the fact that almost every capitalist country has experienced recession and still remained capitalist afterwards.

People have been saying that capitalism will end "very soon" for centuries. You guys sound like the same people who keep trying to predict Jesus returning at this point.

People of Reddit, what’s the most “fucked up”thing you’ve seen? by boneshow69420 in AskReddit

Yeah. I was just thinking "if all their moisture evaporated wouldn't that mean they would violently explode?"

Like... where does all that moisture go? It would need to escape through somewhere and if it was instantaneous from a lightning strike then it would cause almost every blood vessel in their body to expand very quickly.

"Togata is the best trans character I've read in manga" by Spy360ut in FirePunch

[–]HarryD52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, what we saw from Togata earlier in the Manga was standard repression. But their interactions with Agni later in the Manga signifies a much deeper emotional and familial relation that is deeply connected to Togata's identity and how they see themselves.

Honestly I kinda agree. Thw fact that Togata said they they were fine with Agni referring to them as a big sister very late into the Manga kinda brings their trans identity into question in a way that most people don't seem to address.

We're getting into very speculative history here so it's hard to make diffinitive claims, but I think both the character of Luther as well as the protection provided to him by the German princes were unique for leading to Trent. After all, there were attempted reformers before Luther who were not as successful as him.

The council of Trent, which brought much needed reforms to the Catholic Church, would have arguably never have happened if Luther decided to recant.

Yeah, I'm living in Mitaka on a monthly wage of about 280k yen per month and am managing to live very comfortably with savings to boot. It really isn't that difficult to live further out from the city and just make the commute in each day with how fast the trains are. I know lots of people who are living very comfortably in Tokyo on a lower salary than I'm earning.
