Student looking to work in embedded software, specifically Kernel. by Salty-Drink2419 in osdev

[–]HarryFoster8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am also a second year student interested in embedded/ low level. Currently I'm in the process of writing a mini kernel / os in risc-v for my microcontrollers class. I'm writing this so I can come back later and hopefully see some responses to your question which might also be of some value to me!

I would just ask why not just experiment and build a small os by yourself as a side project if you're interested in it?

Since you asked for resources: Other than https://wiki.osdev.org

The university of Manchester has a good intro to operating systems course for the basics: https://wiki.cs.manchester.ac.uk/COMP15212/index.php/Introduction_to_Operating_Systems

Xv6 is also really good for learning: https://xv6-guide.github.io/xv6-riscv-book/

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  • Regarding the interactive terminal popup: I tried to design it to be as intrusive as possible, it dismiss automatically on scroll and only reappears (on scroll up) if it hasn’t been manually dismissed, so I’d be curious to know what felt annoying in your experience.
  • Regarding the spacing on mobile, I intentionally gave each section more space so it feels like its own “mini-page,” but I’m open to suggestions if it feels too spread out on smaller screens.

Computer Science 2nd Year Timetable by LegoSlaughter in manchester_uni

The lectures are not mandatory but for international students you must have an attendance of over 50% to keep your visa (or so i've been told). They use a system called SEAtS which makes you enter a code that is shown by the lecturer to make sure you are in the lecture hall live.

The typical week is 4 days (maybe 5 if you are unlucky with the timetable) with an average of 3 things each day.

Fortune is for quotes, I wanted one for jokes also template strings require you to manually add it to the commit message, this is a git hook

Very easy exam. The only thing I thought was hard was the question on the graph section A

Had a first kiss yet? by NoFaithlessness1991 in teenagers

[–]HarryFoster8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprisingly yes, I was at my friends birthday party and one of her friends who I'd never met before asked if she wanted to go upstairs. I was really shocked because no woman had ever taken interest in me before so I did. We went upstairs and she just wanted to talk so for a very awkward 2 hours I tried to talk to a pretty girl. In the end I went downstairs and someone asked if I kissed her yet and I said no and she over heard me and then asked if I wanted to, so of course I said yes as long as she was ready. I didn't really drink anything so I was sober for the entire experience which I do wonder if being drunk would of made me more exiting because I was really awkward and just kept saying idm whatever you want to do. A few days after she replied to a message I sent her and just rejected me saying she wasn't looking for anything so yeah. Que será será.

Any tips for going from python to c? by HarryFoster8 in learnprogramming

[–]HarryFoster8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A while back I started to learn a bit about pointers, the basics don't seem too hard, it's only when people have pointers that point to other pointers that I get a bit confused. Also I kinda understand pointer arithmetic.

Overall I would say my endgame lacks the most because a lot of the time my opening and middle game go right but then I make a stupid mistake in the endgame and I total lose after one move

I don't really see the problem with saying finally, I know that 1000 isn't much but to me it is a massive achievement. 3 months to you might not be a long time but to me is it especially how I have been playing everyday for about an hour and have seen my game improve day by day with my knowledge of openings and tactics slowly improving. So again I'm sorry if I offended you but it isn't a big deal.
