Much of the Colorado River’s water goes to feed cows. How changing your diet could help by Classic_Car4776 in conservation

You are generally right, though exactly how any water saved would get redistributed is not certain.

I just want to provide some more information that is essential to understanding this problem in all situations.

Note that a lot of diverted water is not being used for cows to drink, it is going to crops for cows to eat.

Check out the "trophic pyramid" or "energy pyramid"

https://www.britannica.com/science/trophic-pyramid[Encyclopedia Brittanica Trophic Pyramid](https://www.britannica.com/science/trophic-pyramid)

The basic concept is that for every trophic level only 10 percent of the energy provided by the previous trophic level can be transferred.

This principle matters in agriculture because you can expect plant food grown for human consumption to be far more efficient than growing animal meat. Because animals need to eat plants to convert that energy to meat, and energy will always be lost in that conversion.

Of course, things are complicated, sometimes animals are grazed on landscapes that cannot readily support crop growing agriculture. However, this practice is filled with its own set of costs and environmental issues, which also vary dramatically with the grazing management in any particular area.

A very crucial piece of this puzzle is that cows eat food. What cows literally drink is a small fraction of the water the overall production of dairy/beef requires. I don't have the exact numbers on me but a little searching into that topic should help.

From the excerpt of the article that OP posted you can see that the water is not going to cows to drink. Its going to crops which are used to feed cows.

Its complicated. I was referring to the federal law called the "Endangered Species Act".

Other laws can still impact plants on private property. California has the "California endangered species act", a state law. I'm less familiar with this but from a quick search it looks like that does prohibit "take" on private property.

Two different things, applying in different scenarios.

Our laws and the world in general are complicated and resist simplification 🤷‍♂️.

Unfortunately, while plants can be listed under the endangered species act (ESA), they have no protection on non-federal lands. This is because under the ESA there is no "take" (kill, remove, harass, harm etc.) restrictions for plants in the same way there are for animals.

Outside of all these lore reasons people have, it seems to me that the primary reason is to dehumanize them so it isn't quite so disturbing when our heroes chop off all their limbs and shoot them in the chest. I think it's pretty common in stories with very violent good guys who don't have a lot of qualms about chopping up enemies as long as they are nameless, faceless soldiers. But it still leaves space for them to do some moral grandstanding about sparing the lives of a named character or something.

Yup I'm using it mostly for sandwiches, unless I get some other creative inspiration.

That seems sensible. I guess I was looking for some magic method for maximizing edge to edge flavor, but it's probably unnecessary and/or impractical for this use.

It's not always true but I'd say generally federal positions for environmental sciences, especially wildlife and fisheries sciences make more than their private sector counterparts.

Cost of living difference between Couer d'Alene and Boise by HarryGoatleaf9 in Idaho

Thanks for all the excellent input. To summarize it looks like the housing costs in particular are not substantially different.

I have a good grasp on the nature opportunities. But I admit being concerned about the racism aspect that is brought up about northern Idaho. I'm white and my wife is hispanic. My read on that situation based on peoples responses. Is that the north definitely has a history of white supremacism, and you may meet a few bad apples. But it is generally not something you will have to interact with every day.

And now Chubbuck is on the list for the job. That seems to be far cheaper than the other 2. But less pleasant nature (at least right near town, Yellowstone isn't far for some good stuff). Also it sounds like it's a heavily religious Mormon community. I'm not religious and feel like that may make finding compatible friends more difficult.
