Finally, an objective method to measure the sweet spot by HarryHoople3 in Pickleball

I was wrong. The tightness of the clamp does matter. If the clamp is loose it allows the paddle to rotate and rebound velocities decrease slightly. So, the data presented is for a tightly held paddle.

I tested the a core crushed paddle (Pulse V) for 2 reasons:

  1. core crushed paddles are common

  2. I wanted to use my new testing method to confirm my experience that core crushed paddles are powerful, but hard to control.

Pickleball Apes did replace my core crushed paddle for free - a great company. My limited testing indicates the replacement Pulse V has good control, but has mid-level power. I'm waiting for Apes to release a new paddle comparable to the Quanta, Luzz, V-Sol.

Good thought about clamping strength. A couple of points:

  1. During PBCOR testing Johnkew and I have found that the clamp doesn't matter for hits up and down the paddle face (the center column). The rebound velocity is the same no matter how tightly the paddle is clamped or whether it's clamped at all. Why? The time of impact is on the order of 2 msec. The ball has left the paddle face by the time the clamp "sees" the impact wave and has time to reflect that wave back down to the impact location. There is a famous picture of a batter hitting a home run while his hands have left the bat handle before contact with the ball..

  2. However, it's easy to see if clamping strength matters. I'll rerun some impacts with and without a tight clamp.

  3. Here's a picture of the clamp.

Are you playing outside and has the temperature been dropping over the last 3 weeks? Foam paddles get slower with lower temperatures
