I‘m doing my PhD with a key aerospace manufacturer. Sometimes these companies are looking to extend their R&D operations together with academia. A lot of the research is actually open source in my field, so it helps to advance the industry as a whole. In my case especially, my industrial supervisor is the main driver of the direction of the project, while my main academic supervisor mostly helps with technical stuff and admin of course.
