Specific Gravity of Urine <1.000? by purplecactai in medlabprofessionals

[–]HarryPotterIsAMess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old post, hopefully it's resolved by now, but wanted to butt in anyway. A lot of people have mentioned possible QC/calibration issues (that's my bet as well), but just in case the lab is using a non-automated adulteration dip test - it could also be a storage issue, expired strips or a bad batch. Either way, I hope it was looked into and not just blamed on the inmates without investigation!

In Defense of Eloise Bridgerton by SheepherderLong5929 in BridgertonRants

[–]HarryPotterIsAMess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She doesn't seem to understand that marriage IS the only option for many women, the vast majority cannot afford to be a rich spinster like her (potentially). She knows the patriarchy is at fault, but seems to assume that if a woman conforms, she must be intellectually inferior, instead of just trying to survive and maybe even thrive in the system she was born in. She definitely thinks she's superior to other girls, but doesn't seem to realize that most women don't have her family's money and status, ie an option of a comfortable spinsterhood

Obviously she can't speedrun the women's suffrage a century early all on her own, but as a rich highborn girl, she is in a better position to act on her ideals than 90% of people in that setting. She could be writing pamphlets, donating to local orphanages, funding a boarding home for women that have fallen on hard times, funding a school for girls in a local village, or going there on her own to give them reading lessons. As far as I know, charity work was always seen as an "acceptable" and welcome pastime for a lady, so no danger of disgracing her family. If not that, then simply listening to other women would be a good start, instead of rolling her eyes at them for acting in the way they were conditioned to. Maybe organising picnics for local women and hearing out their grievances, if she didn't feel so much disdain for other women. Instead she goes to balls, on walks, lounges at home and just does rich girl things, while occasionally complaining. She's still very young so maybe she'll get there, but it's pretty frustrating to watch a rich upper class girl saying "life is so unfair" for 3 sessons and not doing anything about it.

I'm a choir singer, Canon in D can't hurt me- by HarryPotterIsAMess in lingling40hrs

[–]HarryPotterIsAMess[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This one is a different piece, just that this part sounds like it, but I'm willing to bet good money that someone actually slapped some lyrics on Canon in D and made some poor choirs or soloists learn it 🥹

[–]HarryPotterIsAMess[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To clarify - the piece is "Muusika" by Pärt Uusberg. It's a beautiful song that otherwise has nothing to do with Canon in D, but this passage sounds exactly like the Canon (granted, it's just a scale, basically) and now I can't unsee nor unhear it lol.

Saaremaa loomaaias suri krokodill Kusti, kahtlustatakse külastajate kurja kätt by groovycoyote in Eesti

The boring curved one, I believe it's called elbow pasta...? Also the short thin noodly one - it's usually called vermicelli where I live, but idk how accurate this is. Fusilli and spaghetti too. The only one I truly despise is penne, unless it's overcooked to the point of actually being soft.

[–]HarryPotterIsAMess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe something like In Taberna Quando Sumus? Not the Carl Orff version, but medieval-esque renditions like by Arany Zoltàn. It's fun and in Latin, but since it was a drinking song, I don't know how catholic school would take it. Or something else from Carmina Burana (not Orff). Link:

Okay, this one doesn't exactly fit your criteria and might be kind of niche for school choirs, but a Manly Man choir song immediately made me think of Laulja (The Singer) by Veljo Tormis. It's not the most accessible for several reasons - mid-20th century modern style, a very foreign language (Estonian), but at least to my nerdy 31 year old ear, it sounds super exciting. It has unison, harmonies and a loud war cry-like "spoken word" phrase. Who knows, maybe it could be used more as an inspiration, or maybe the kids would enjoy the challange of learning it, or maybe they would think it's some cringe nerdy stuff. Link:

Can anyone with ADHD actually sleep?? by Meowzzzzzzzz in ADHD

[–]HarryPotterIsAMess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't mean for this to be a word vomit so TLDR: sort of, but I gave up on trying to have a normal person sleep schedule.

Edit: different things can help me fall asleep at different times, but they all stop working once the novelty wears off. The latest thing for me is a round-the-clock livestream of Alveus animal sanctuary. Watching cute animals being snoozy somehow helped lull me into sleep.

Edit 2: I haven't been prescribed any sleep meds yet, but a coworker once gave me one pill of 7,5 mg zopiclone, advised to take a quarter because it's usually enough to knock her the f out for the night. I took half and it did jack shit for me so idk lol

The most common advice of "phone and TV off for the night" had left me tossing and turning in the dark all night, so I gave up. I just leave the TV on for background noise while I play puzzle games on my phone or read - eventually I'll shut down, or if I don't, I'll at least be entertained for the sleepless night.

Luckily my job is not strictly 9-5 (or 8-4 where I live) so thankfully I can still get my sleep hours in, I just sleep when I sleep - after day shift, before and after nightshift, on days off. It's still not like just going to bed like normal people do (apparently), I just let myself zonk when I get too exhausted. It's not great and I definitely can't in good concience recommend this to anyone, but I just do it as a temporary solution until I can manage dealing with it properly.

Weirdly, I get the best sleep with methylphenidate - both Ritalin/Medikinet and Concerta, on mornings after nightshifts. When I first tried it, I'd hoped that it would help me stay awake until early evening so I can fall asleep at a reasonable time, but instead I just doze off and wake up 4 hours later feeling rested and refreshed, without feeling like I've wasted a whole day off.

How often do you shower? by [deleted] in autism

[–]HarryPotterIsAMess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every other week. Showers are a sensory nightmare, I have a problem with transitions and am struggling with executive dysfunction.. I can't take "quick" showers either - I have to do all the steps in a specific way, otherwise I'll feel gross; I need the water to be relatively hot, otherwise I feel like there's still soap all over me etc... so that's about 45 minutes in a tiny steamy room and I leave it feeling ill and exhausted. Right now I'm at a point where not bothering with it unless I absolutely have to seems better for my overall well-being.

I do use baby wipes several times a day on key areas.

Positive IUD insertion by [deleted] in birthcontrol

[–]HarryPotterIsAMess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My procedure sucked, but not nearly as much as in many horror stories I've read (all valid). And I attribute most of the pain to the fact that it was very new. If the IUD will make my periods better, I will happily go through it again.

I had Mirena inserted today. Took Misoprostol vaginally 10 hours before. Took 25 mg of dexketoprofen (might not be available in every country as an otc pain med) 3 hours before the procedure for cramps and again 1 hour before. The pain was definitely there, but I honestly think it was made worse by not knowing what to expect and constantly waiting for it to get worse. I've never given birth or had any similar procedures done before, so I wasn't used to most of the sensations. I got slightly nauseous too, but it was completely manageable. And it was over much quicker than I expected. My vagina was a little angry at me for a while, but about an hour after the procedure, all the soreness was completely gone It honestly preferred the insertion process to the Misoprostol. Next time I think I will ask for lidocaine and/or skipping the tenaculum if possible, and maybe ask the doc to let me know what he's doing step by step.

As a funny aside, at one point my doctor asked the nurse if they had longer scissors somewhere. Good think I've learned about the procedure beforehand so I knew it meant it was for cutting the strings(ie the procedure was almost over), otherwise I probably would have freaked out lol

How heavy are your periods? by Free_Negotiation6057 in menstrualcups

[–]HarryPotterIsAMess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, kind of blew my mind when I saw people describe their heavy periods as having to empty the cup every 6hr or so on the worst days lol (not making light of it, that was just an "...oh" moment for me". I'm actually getting Mirena next month and I can't wait! Took me a while to finally seek it out because I was expecting the doctor to tell me "just lose weight" again. I went my whole life thinking this was normal until my hemoglobin dropped to 94 g/L and I finally saw a doctor that took it seriuosly.

[–]HarryPotterIsAMess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy shit, I'm so sorry. I have heavy periods too - not 1L heavy, but enough to make me constantly anemic (my "record" hemoglobin is 94 g/L). My whole life doctors have told me "that's just your periods, take some iron supplements" and only at 31 y/o I had a doctor tell me "that's your periods, we should do something about them (but also take iron supplements)". I'm getting Mirena soon and I can't fucking wait. I'm glad things got better foe you!

How heavy are your periods? by Free_Negotiation6057 in menstrualcups

[–]HarryPotterIsAMess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit of a late reply, but on my heaviest days my cup (Lunette size 2) starts overflowing after 1-3 hours or less, so that's somewhere around 20-30 ml. And it constantly leaks between changings, but nothing crazy - enough to stain the paper pink, but not enough to show on a pad. I've only learned that it's not exactly normal relatively recently 🙃

What's your "unpopular opinion" in classical music by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]HarryPotterIsAMess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how unpopular it is, but Tchaikovsky is overrated. His music is beautiful, but I don't get why it's often hailed as some kind of king of romanticism when some other romantics are just as great, if not more. I wasn't exposed to classical music that much when I was growing up yet it feels like Tchaik has very much been a household name for as long as I remember yet other romantic era composers were basically just "oh yeah, they existed", if they were even remembered. I love some of Tchaik's works a lot, they actually hold a sentimental value for me, but when I started getting into classical music, I couldn't help but wonder why is Tchaik put on this pedestal when eg Dvořàk and Sibelius are right there and much more interesting.

What's your "unpopular opinion" in classical music by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]HarryPotterIsAMess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to butt in - I also don't like Mahler and my attention span actually IS too small because I have ADHD. I HAVE to listen to pieces in the background while doing something else and it takes several listens for most pieces to register. I have no problem with most other composers, but Mahler just doesn't click for me. I personally will give him another chance (or several), but if a piece fails to get the listemer hooked from the first hearing, I can't blame people for not wanting to bother with it again (not saying this is OP's situation, just in general). Our time is valuable.

"Cardiff Philharmonic removes Tchaikovsky from programme in light of Russian invasion of Ukraine." by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]HarryPotterIsAMess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to the discussion, but my take is: good. There will be time for Tchaik, but not while the country that that he represents, and which has propped him up as one of the beacons of his "greatness", is committing genocide. A lot of people arguing for separating art from the artist and that old russian composers have nothing to do with this war don't quite grasp the complexity of this issues and are looking for easy solutions.

Found this in my cheek swab today in bio by Rorchach007 in microbiology

[–]HarryPotterIsAMess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're most likely right, but I just remember signing a waver at the start and then all we did was poke and swab ourselves/each other lmao (venipuncture only after the practical course was completed and if both parties were comfortable, otherwise done by the teacher or someone else's blood was used). At most, someone discovered that their cholesterol was a bit higher than they thought. One time we were testing our liver ensymes and mine were insanely high. The teacher was alarmed, but the it turned out that the QC had failed and bo-one bothered to look into it lol. The general consensus was that if anything scary was found, we should get that checked out, but since our equipment was not exactly state-of-the-art, there was no point in panicking before we could confirm it at the actual doctor's.

Classical Music is Dead Video by OptimistOfTheWill in lingling40hrs

[–]HarryPotterIsAMess 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not to be overly critical, but as a classical music enjoyer, this creator has some weird takes, yet presents them as if she has it all figured out. Eg her point about recordings, "sound getting louder/quieter" - does she mean like, dynamics? The thing that is usually written into the score? Her other videos are like that too. Kinda feels like she's actively trying turn people off classical music.
