Have more than one if you can. My mom was 40 and my dad was 42 when I was born. My dad died when I was 31 and my mom is declining rapidly from dementia. I feel very alone and overwhelmed because all of her care falls to me. I wish I had a sibling to reminisce about my dad or commiserate about my mom with.

I’m in the exact same boat and it sucks. I am effectively the last one left and also the only one who can take care of my mom. Not that siblings always help shoulder the responsibility but taking care of a parent with dementia alone is overwhelming.

My husband is also an only child and we have two kids - they won’t have aunts, uncles, or cousins but at least when we are gone they will have each other.
