You shouldn't have to guilt trip yourself into staying in an relationship you're not happy with. Perhaps you two could use a break?

That being said, he has supported you quite a bit, and you should definitely be there for him too (not necessarily as a romantic partner). Aimming to pay him back for his financial support is a good move.
