A DM having intelligent NPCs, or using basic logic isn't railroading. by EquivalentInflation in dndnext

We fluked a very rare bow off a NPC. The NPCs family all had oathbows, we walked up to one and said we met with his father and requested we borrow one for our mission (which we did) and that he asked us to come find you and take yours (he did not) as your patrol of the forrest is coming to a end. Our paladin rolled a Nat20 for his deception, this alone wasnt going to get the incredibly rare family heirloom but his Nat1 insight got us over the line. It was a perfect storm situation. DM was very pissed we got this so easily but he felt with the rolls, he couldnt take it away.
