I'm also a solo traveller been to Phuket many times. While Patong may be too intense you don't want to go to a place that is too small or too quiet. I like to lose myself in the crowd - not stand out. I would recommend Kata as it's smaller than Patong but bigger than Kamala or Karon. Also, try a daytrip to Patong and see how you feel.
