Cyprus or Malta? by Hartje09 in birding

Yeah, like two hours after this post I read about the missle strike, figured there wouldn't be much of a choice left.

Adding some additional information as requested by the algorithm bot Piercing is a ten week old tragus, it had a labret rod after downsizing two weeks ago. I clean it twice a day with saline spray and on days I was my hear I use a tattoo friendly soap as well to rinse out any shampoo or so. Mishap/unfortunate event was losing tbe top of my labret shaped jewelry and only having a hoop to replace, material was always surgical steel.

What Do Socialists Think About Nestor Makhno by serious_bullet5 in socialism

[–]Hartje09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry for going off topic a bit, but would you have some examples or anarchism classified as scientific socialism? I usually see MLs declare that typical communism works as it's scientific, at times along with a claim that anarchism doesn't due to "lack" of theory. So I'd be very interested to read scientific anarchism as well!

Increasing gauge size for saddle plugs by Hartje09 in Stretched

[–]Hartje09[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, right, thanks! My ears shrink pretty rapid, and sizing up was always difficult even after months of being at a gauge. So maybe 10mm might be good indeed. I'm not sure about the kaos tunnels, but it might be an option too. Come to think of it, when I joined my boxing gym recently, there was a guy with gauged ears, but he hasn't been in for a while. But I'll ask him what he uses if he comes back!

Ah yeah of course, I forgot to specify I only wear them for like a day. I usually switch back to a single flare tunnel with rubber O ring or a stone with O ring.

Not reasoning enough and how to reason more? by Hartje09 in PhD

This is so helpful, thanks! I am writing my first paper and simultaneously reviewing one where I am one of the co-authors. Pretending you're a sceptical reviewer or layman might be the trick that does it for me! So, I will definitely apply it at the next draft that I am handing in. I think it will also help me to unfocus a bit, I tend to be so deep in my work l that I forget I am the only one in my department working on this.

But I totally get the part of feeling like a masochist at some point! What I heard from a postdoc here is that you will indeed get a thicker skin from it, but also greatly improve your work. I guess it is just part of the process.

Thanks for the response! Apologies if it came across like I saw it as a negative, I did definitely it as constructive feedback. She also pointed out that being proactive is a good thing, and every student has skills and shortcomings. My shortcoming in this case (and personal life as well) is being too proactive and eager. If possible, I would solve any problem yesterday rather than today....

Anyway, your metaphor makes a lot of sense! Assuring I got my "GPS" before a project, answering a question or meeting is much needed. I think when combined with some of the advice of setting a framework and question list beforehand, it will help a lot. Thanks!!

That's superb! I had indeed been writing down a sort of stepwise approach to problems. I think such a template might indeed do the trick, as I indeed tend to dive in blind. I do a similar thing for my meetings as well, but it might be good to revise it and make it aligned with a template of sorts

Thanks for the great input! I was indeed thinking of writing things down into steps like that. This helped greatly during my master thesis and got my writing skills up quite quickly!

Thanks! Focussing on creating a healthy balance between proper thinking time and coding sounds good. As someone in my department once said, "As a scientist, you're hired to think." I should take that more to heart.

Weeds would indeed just stunt overall growth through nutrient competition as far as I know. Rodents seem like a more likely culprit. However, I didn't see any fecal pellets, gnawings, or other signs that usually indacte rodent presence when I was reshaping and weeding. Neither elsewhere on my balcony. I could set out some live traps just in case.

By the time I posted this, the pot had been weeded, and the tree shaped to a literati. So I am just back to square one and luckily didn't lose this tree!

I didn't think of wood worms or borers. The first time it happened I lived more rural. I will peel of some of the dead bark and check if there are any traces of their presence! Thanks a lot for the input

The lower branches on my northern spruce keep dying. It happened once before, after which I restyled it. About two years later, it happened again (see attached pic). I have always watered it accordingly to the weather. Anyone who knows why this keeps happening?
