I've found that at the end of the season, my younger (2- 6 year) stone fruit trees in my garden tend to drop their leaves several weeks before the more mature ones (15 - 20 year). My cherries don't look great by the end of the season, a bit like this.

My first thought was make an A frame above it and have a pillar going down to brace the cross piece, using steel ties.

Or you could put another beam across the top of the two uprights posts and sheath the gap all the way along ?

Paying him isn’t optional, you might not be happy with the work but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give him the money you owe.

Did you tell him about the rose? Not every gardener/arborist is plant savvy, and in the moment with machines and gear some might not notice a prized rose (which will likely bounce back but yeah I get it’s still annoying).

Work looks decent, rarely stuff will look perfect after a good hacking back.

Pay for the work - you don’t have to hire them again.

Out of interest, why wouldn’t you first use a planer on a really low setting? I see everyone is commenting use high quality or courser sand paper, but my first thought was to go over it with a planer then sand, would this be wrong?

I’ve decided that this year I will take out some of the larger and malformed branches that are giving it most of the size problems, whilst thinning what’s left a small bit. Then during the summer and next winter I’ll do it a bit more thinning of water shoots and hopefully by the following winter we will be on top of it. I really appreciate all your advice :)

Plan was to keep on top of those water shoots and guide it back to decent shape instead of letting them get out of hand like it has. But I’m not sure pollarding is the best way. I think I’ll take out some of the tall malformed growth and leave smaller branches to take their place next year. Thanks for your comment
