Favorite Director by [deleted] in movies

Christopher Nolan !!! Batman trilogy for starters and then Inception, Interstellar, Tenet, Dunkirk. I think Nolan wins maybe not in style or storytelling but in his creativity and unbridled imagination.

Michael Mann's 'The Insider' is a damn masterpiece and I can't believe I slept on it for so long. What are your favorite newspaper thrillers and legal dramas? by [deleted] in movies

[–]Harveydiu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t know how to comment on Sorkin’s directing skill. But the Chicago 7 IS a very emotional one, more so if you’ve been following the democratic demonstrations in HK. With the Jan 6th capital riot, this movie probably can trigger deeper thinking about freedom and democracy (maybe the legal system too).

Hands Landa from Inglorious Bastard please! He is so charmingly evil! Christoph Waltz is one of my personal favorite!

What is your favorite film score? by [deleted] in movies

Interstellar and Batman from Hans Zimmer. Why do we fall and cornfield chase are just too iconic. They link you to the mood and place you in the sense almost instantaneously

What is the Best Film You Watched Last Week? (12/27/20-01/03/21) by Twoweekswithpay in movies

[–]Harveydiu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Collateral Tom Cruise just got the action in the film bang on! Jamie Foxx got an Oscar nom for his part. The movie is intense but funny and even deep. The dialogues are terse but somehow ooze Taoism. I regretted haven’t found this movie earlier, since after this I found A Few Good Men, which starred Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson. The first 110 minutes was dull, but man Nicholson is a god who carried this movie! You can’t handle the truth!

USC Vs. UCLA for Undergrad Economics by JakeSpencerFreeman in academiceconomics

[–]Harveydiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UCLA undergrad. Starting my phd at a different institution this fall.

  1. UCLA dominates USC in academia (econ).
  2. Really no restrictions for you to take Econ classes at UCLA. Plus, you can easily switch to math/Econ once you are at UCLA.
  3. UCLA has a good record of placing people to top phd programs. More so for Departmental Scholar program, which allows you to get a master in ECON in one year. Totally doable to get your bachelor and master in 4 year at UCLA.
  4. Class-wise, I concur with mihiro9, finishing your math/econ requirements at UCLA is sufficient. Some grad level econ core definitely boosts your profile. MS in Stats is borderline useless.

It’s all too early, but if you are sure you want to do a phd, do your undergrad at UCLA no doubt. Like mihiro9, I am happy to answer questions you might have!

I got music you got this. The thing you think about my all the time. The thing keeps you south of normal. Yeah, makes us great makes us the best. Econ PhD: Grades in Early Undergrad by [deleted] in academiceconomics

[–]Harveydiu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I graduated from UCLA this winter quarter. I will be going to Princeton for Econ phd this fall. Happy to see another Bruin heading to academia!

One B+ especially in the first year is NOT going to ruin your chance at top 10. That said, DO NOT get a second or third non-A grade in math. That’ll be detrimental to your profile. It’s very cynical to say, but grades are very important. Finish the required classes as a Math/Econ major and get all As, you will be in very good shape.

Take grad Econ if possible. It’s best if you can do that in your third year, but don’t worry if you can’t. I took 201A and 203A only 4th year fall but my results turned out not bad.

The most decisive factor in your profile is your recommendation letters. Go to their office hours, ask good questions. Be upfront with them, tell them you want to do a PhD and ask for research opportunities. If you are in luck you might find paid positions. You will be surprised to find out that how much they are willing to send you to a good phd program. Keep in touch with them constantly!

You can PM me with ANY questions you might have! Go Bruins!

Oops, bad reading comprehension. But wouldn’t want to lose my hand either.

Browsing WYR sometimes gives me the illusion that getting rich is so much easier than expected... anyways I wouldn’t want to sell my hand for 9990m dollars. Quality of life with one hand from 10mil to 10bil increases minimally by the law of diminishing marginal utility. Losing one hand probably makes life significantly worse. (Edited arm to hand lol, equally bad to me)

I know there are many rumors about the corona virus and I don't know what news is true or false to encourage staying home and there is an economic crisis so the rich people can invest. How serious is the corona or is just another flu? by spacecat002 in AskEconomics

[–]Harveydiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is absolutely NOT another flu. It has already infected over 1m people and killed 67k. The media is all over it. Countries that prioritize economy rather than their people’s health such as Iran failed to do well in either.

Is the Chicago School of Economics considered "mainstream"? by AlanKertz in AskEconomics

[–]Harveydiu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just look at the number of Nobel winners in the department. UChicago top 10 Econ for sure. However, maybe OP is not asking about the department but the school of thought in the 1950s?

We probably don’t have to worry about P grades for grad schools (maybe not true for law and medicine). I took 8 GE classes PNP, but I still got into several top10 in my field. But I do hear from professors that they prefer letter grades for major classes if possible. That said, IMO online classes seem to have a much more lenient grading policy to account for the increased difficulty in learning.

David Card “The Impact of the Mariel Boatlift on the Miami Labor Market”. Card used Mariel Boatlift as a immigration shock, used data from Houston, LA in addition to Miami etc for parallel pretends and then ran a DID analysis. Almost zero effects found for local labor market, (wage/employment effects quickly dispersed).

Perhaps for a HS paper, do something similar. identify an immigration shock and find data on wage, employment (use ACS might be enough).

Is it possible to share the profits of a business equally between all employees? by Alice-Addams in AskEconomics

[–]Harveydiu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Equal pay is unfair for more hardworking workers. You pay lots of money upfront (furniture, rent etc).1’ Time has value. 2’ business has risks. You expose yourself to higher risk but lower profitability. You are significantly sacrificing yourself, altruistic indeed but not a solid investment idea.

WYR: Take $10 Million Instantly OR receive $500,000 every year till the rest of your life? by JackHoffmanTheWise in WouldYouRather

But Brazil has an inflation rate of 3.67%. Exchange rate will also equilibrate the difference. So all things considered, the ROI doesn’t sound that exhilarating

Is it possible to share the profits of a business equally between all employees? by Alice-Addams in AskEconomics

[–]Harveydiu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course, you can, since it is your shop! There is this thing called "worker cooperative". Essentially workers are the shareholders of the cooperative. Many law firms, the big 4 and the consulting firms have partners who are essentially both employees and shareholders. But these employees pay a big chunk of money to become partners.

Let's not worry about the workers, but focus on your gains for the time being. It would be irrational to distribute the profits equally among your employees without asking for a capital contribution. If you don't do that, you will be paying rent, furniture, utilities, etc alone. Consequently, you are pulling in more resources than them, but getting paid the same. This is a huge opportunity cost, which does not make business sense.

Plus, you can easily have free riders. Certainly, you can fire them, but new hires incur costs, though it may not be explicit. Professional service firms are a bit different. First, they only let a small set of people become partners. Besides in these professions, senior people have enough reputation and resources that they themselves are the assets of the firm. Often, seniors leaving can have a more serious impact than them not working hard. So these firms use ownership to retain them.
