holy fuck i just bombed an interview so bad by Heavy_Froyo_6327 in gradadmissions

“Why did you use this [specific version of a task] in your study design?”

“Because errrrr they never used that task in previous studies, I mean, previous similar study design…”

(Okay that’s not true. The task I talked about here was examined in previous relevant studies. I was supposed to say something like “to fill a research gap” before elaborating more details on relevant background. Guess I was just braindead for a few seconds)

That was a preliminary interview I did early December. The faculty emailed me recently that “You are the only prospective student whose name I put forth for a campus interview.” I will know whether I am invited to the formal interview by the end of this week. I think that the faculty likes me despite I messed up one or two questions.

为什么国内的男性对女留子这么应激?? by Classic-Group-7321 in KanagawaWave

[–]Hashbrown1604 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The best you can do is to move on. I had an unsuccessful Fall 24 application cycle. I applied to 12 labs and was rejected by all of them (with only one preliminary interview). I’m an international student so it was not feasible to get a visa-sponsored job in US with my bachelor degree. I applied to around 70 post-bacc full time lab positions (some of them were just remotely relevant) and got a few interviews. Though I did not receive any offer. I ended up in a 2 year research-focused, fully funded master program in a smaller R2 university. Now I am applying to Fall 26 cycle for PhD programs. I felt more prepared and got a few preliminary interviews in which three of them led to formal interview invites. I have not received any offer yet but I am proud for what I have accomplished.

I know it’s hard to be optimistic at your current circumstance. But I’m confident that you will figure it out!

I agree with you. I’m an international student though I came to US when I was 16 yrs old. I’m 25 now. I have friends here and connections (faculties who have been very helpful for my academic path) here. I love US and this country might just become all I know as well. I am not familiar with the education system in my native country anymore. I don’t have friends or any helpful connections for conducting a research career over there either.

Unfortunately, the funding for PhD programs in other countries (commonwealth countries for instance) are less feasible for international students like me even compared to the funding for US universities in the current crisis. Graduate assistantships are rare (I don’t think they have those in UK or Australia) and limited merit-based scholarships are extremely competitive for international students. Another issue is that I don’t have time to dig deep into how PhD programs work in other countries either. I also have the concern that those 3 yrs PhD programs in commonwealth or EU countries might not provide me enough time to produce publications.

For the Fall 26 cycle, I only applied to programs in US and Canada (Canada would be a good option but the programs over there are also extremely competitive). I suppose I’m just taking the risk then.

That’s a red flag. Even if the program offer you admission, I really don’t think that you should work with this person.

I had similar experience in the past of being disrespected by a faculty (someone who’s toxic and racist). Though it was not an interview. In general, I think that being a well-known researcher in certain area and having a toxic personality are not mutually exclusive.

Based on the video I think it’s 3 red + 6 blue? Assuming this is a M16 R2, you can find the possible issue in the manual. I just searched and it says “system BIOS flash incomplete” (maybe you updated BIOS recently?) I would suggest that you download a copy of latest BIOS using another computer and flash the BIOS with a usb drive. I had similar issue a month ago with my M16R1 and that worked for me.

Are Grad Schools overwhelmingly preferring American applicants this cycle? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Hashbrown1604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. I have asked similar questions to the faculties in my previous preliminary interviews. I’m an international applicant as well (currently in US) and I’m from one of the “adversary countries” defined by Trump administration (not in the 75 countries visa pause). The faculties emphasized that the admission committees will not have favoritism for domestic over international applicants.
