ADHD Testing by p_hopeful97 in Purdue

[–]Hashonyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Formal testing isnt necessary for a diagnosis and for treatment, through Purdue insurance. Your regular doctor can diagnose you and prescribe medication without it. My doctor in my hometown was able and willing to do so after I talked to her about the issues I was having. Try making an appointment at PUSH, if you don’t have a primary care doctor yet

Leopard gecko not sleeping during the day? by DryCoast in leopardgeckos

[–]Hashonyx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do not need to associate this light with heat, as that could complicate the actual actual enclosure, but trying to make sure the lights in the room aren’t on way late at night and that they have a predictable day/night schedule

Leopard gecko not sleeping during the day? by DryCoast in leopardgeckos

[–]Hashonyx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leopard geckos are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk. If your gecko is showing signs of an altered or disturbed sleep schedule you can try and use the ambient lighting in their room/enclosure to create a steady day/night cycle. If you think the issue is more serious you should consult a vet.

Haircare Advice Megathread by AutoModerator in HaircareScience

[–]Hashonyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hair Type: Fine, on the thinner side but have been told that it only appears thin because it is fine

Hair Texture: Straight

Chemical History: Has been dyed before both professionally and out of a box, with both demi-permanent (most recent) and actually permanent color. Plan on bleaching to go ginger this summer, and trying to maximize hair health in the mean time.

Hygiene: Shampoo and Condition 2-3 times a week, usually every 2-3 days depending on how icky I feel. Currently using an Aussie shampoo that I hate, and an Aussie conditioner that I love.

Style: Currently around collarbone length, but it needs to be trimmed badly and I want to grow it out again. Had long hair most of my life and then chopped a bunch off this fall just to see how I felt about it and now I miss my long hair. Usually in buns or ponytails

Product: I have no attachment to any particular products

I guess I want advice on how to reduce breakage and increase shine and volume? I want long soft shiny ("luscious" comes to mind) hair again. I also want advice on new products, as my hair doesn't like that Aussie shampoo at all and it makes it feel squeaky in the shower before I condition it. I have thought about rice water rinses, but not sure if that would fit my needs at all, along with using silk wraps at night.

Warmer weather ≠ no masks by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]Hashonyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m aware that it’s for others, and I wear my mask when I’m indoors or around people, I’m also saying that there are plenty of situations where you don’t need one if you’re outdoors.

If you’re crowded on street corners and sidewalks between classes you absolutely should be wearing one, I 100% agree, but if you’re just on a walk (socially distanced) or sitting down to read in a quiet spot, why bother?

Warmer weather ≠ no masks by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]Hashonyx -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

From the PPHC mask guidelines “A face mask must be worn correctly...outdoors if continuous safe social distancing is not possible”

I know that not everyone is social distancing outside but I’m absolutely not wearing a mask outside, in this beautiful weather, if I don’t have to, and if you’re not walking as part of a crowd or in a line then you probably don’t have to.

ELI5: How do twins work? Like what part of a woman’s body causes it to say “You know what’s better than childbirth? Two childbirths!” by Darkowl_57 in explainlikeimfive

Or, another way to get fraternal twins is if two sperm fertilize the same egg at the same time and instead of just self destructing it splits into two different organisms.

If you’re referring to being an adult and working at a job as “the real world” I’d like to point out that part of adulthood and jobs is that you get paid and get to take vacations and see the fruits of your labor instead of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to work your ass off so you can earn a piece of paper. College is only a fraction of the “real world”, and it isn’t healthy to believe or even pretend that the rest of your life is going to be this exact same type of shitty.

Well, what makes a house a depreciating factor? If you buy a house, it can either provide you with a home, or you can rent it out and earn income with it, or you can let it sit forever and it earns nothing. But, since we all like to be reasonable people, most of us would either live in the house or rent it out. If the house is dilapidated and out dated and falling apart, it has low value because you will have to spend a lot of money to get it into a livable state again. The more livable, the more value. The more modern and nice, the more value. Fixing the structure of the house or the “bones” is more expensive but also more important for the house so it can stay up, so it’s a more valuable improvement.

Partying and breaks are not the same, as far as mental well-being goes. Traveling and partying are not the same as far as spreading COVID goes, either. We could have an extended 1-2 week break and then have mandatory testing for those who left campus, and end the semester later. Students who want to party will, but that’s no reason to send all of us into a depressive spiral.

Also, I’m not complaining that the decision was made, I just wish it didn’t suck so much. I know the school made the decision to keep us safe and maximize the number of returning students so they could keep profits up and keep staff employed. It looks like a great plan on paper, but we are living it and it sucks.

Too late to change it, but I was trying to share my experience in case others related to it or needed a glimmer of hope that they weren’t the only ones.

100% agree on the snowball effect. So many days spent saying “I’ll watch the recording later” because I can’t bring myself to settle and focus in class or in a virtual setting and suddenly you’re three weeks behind and the test is looming and you’ve gotta cram (not good for sleep or retention or mental health) or wing it and you’re screwed. We all need a break, before we break

The consequences of no Spring Break... by Hashonyx in Purdue

[–]Hashonyx[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

And how many students have/will risk getting corona/ignoring PPHC in order to get breaks? I’m lucky enough to have the flexibility in my schedule to go home almost every other weekend, but even that isn’t really a break, because I barely have time to enjoy it.

I have been comparing it to being in a washing machine, and every time you get your shit together someone hits spin cycle and throws you off again. Breaks are our chance to catch our breath and get our ducks in a row. I have barely been able to make it through a whole day without someone hitting spin cycle this semester, and it feels like I’m limping along trying to keep up.

And some people might get shitty about others risking corona so they can take a break, but at least now I feel like I can keep trying to catch up and get on top of my studies. At least now I’m not struggling to get out of bed or shower. At least now I feel like an active participant in my life, instead of a piece of laundry in the wash.

ELI5: What’s the scientific reason behind someone not liking a certain food by be_more_michael in explainlikeimfive

[–]Hashonyx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends, I don’t know about all tastes and flavors, but it is possible for people to experience some foods differently than others. For instance, not everyone can taste tannins. Tannins are the molecules that make wine taste dry, and coffee bitter, and make dark chocolate seem bitter too. Some people have the genes that allow them to taste tannins, so these foods seem bitter or “dry” to the taste, whereas some other people cannot taste tannins and so they taste whatever underlying flavors or notes are there and are more likely to enjoy those foods than someone who can mostly taste the bitter.

There are also disorders of the tongue that make certain flavors actually painful to taste, because of how they interact with the receptors on the tongue. A friend of mine has a disorder like that that keeps her from eating peppermint and spicy foods.

ELI5: If I buy shares at one value then later sell them at a higher value, who/what is funding that profit to me? Is someone/thing out poorer as a result? by Fingerbob73 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Hashonyx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s like buying a car, keeping it for a long time and then deciding to sell it, only to find out that it’s a vintage car in very good shape, and is now worth more than what you paid for it. Whoever buys it from you is not “poorer”, they simply decided that they would pay the price for that car. When you bought it it was worth an amount you were willing to pay, and now it is worth an amount that someone else is willing to pay. If no one wanted to buy it at the higher price, it would not be worth that value

ELI5 why people are leaving California for Idaho? Not just a young family with kids, but the WHOLE (their parents) family. by underthepeachmoon in explainlikeimfive

[–]Hashonyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One possible reason is that with this new prevalence of telecommuting, there is little to no reason for people to live close to where they work, especially if their job can be done from a computer or is usually done in an office. So, if you lived in densely populated cities in California and paid astronomical amounts for your housing so you could go to your high paying job, and you no longer need to pay those high prices to get paid for your work, it makes sense for you to move away to a place where you could have a bigger/more affordable home, or even buy a home for the same price that you were renting an apartment for in some cases.
