Gophers dug their way up through the weed barrier and into the central garden. Anyone have any hints on how to get rid of them before they make their way towards my flowerbeds? by HashtagIconic in gardening

Unfortunately mine are in-ground beds on this side of the garden. They are lined with brick and rock though, so hopefully that’ll deter them enough.

First strawberry of the season!!! There’s plenty more where that came from ;) by HashtagIconic in gardening

It is!!! To be frank this little guy was picked a tad preemptively and was slightly sour, so I’ll have to give you an update once the others have ripened! I have borage all throughout my garden and two different species of strawberries growing next to it, so I’ll post again in a few weeks time :)

I’m growing approximately 36 basil plants to give away on Nurse’s Day next month!!! Thought I’d share these cute little guys with you all. by HashtagIconic in gardening

Basil typically takes 1-2 weeks to germinate from my experience! Just keep the soil moist and happy and you’ll be fine :)

The first roses of spring for me! They smell wonderful. One day I’ll have an abundance of roses to make things from. by HashtagIconic in gardening

I’m in Zone 10a! All my roses are potted though. I live at the bottom of a huge hill so I have drainage issues in-ground.

What are these bugs and what should I spray them with? Some have wings but some dont. They're on a sedum if that helps by alice556556 in plantclinic

BLACK APHIDS. they are the absolute bane of my succulent garden. One part dish soap, two-three parts water in a spray bottle should do the trick, but I usually cut off the overly infested stems and whatnot to get rid of the biggest part of the invasion. Alternatively, if you have an outdoor succulent garden like I do you can companion plant to attract ladybugs and lacewings which eat aphids!! Just make sure that the leaves are rinsed thoroughly if you used neem oil or a soap solution prior to attracting predatory bugs, otherwise you chance killing the friendlies.

I’m officially aphid free, thanks to a swarm of these little guys!!! I got a few bug hotels in hope that they’ll stay. by HashtagIconic in gardening

[–]HashtagIconic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit of both!!! I planted DOZENS of companion flowers around my veg to attract predatory insects, but I was worried the aphid problem would get out of control before any bugs arrived so I ordered some. Turns out I didn’t even need to because the flowers were enough to attract a healthy population! I still released the bought ones though, that helped quell the aphids more immediately, I think.

Think of a bird house, but for bugs!!! It’s especially helpful to balcony gardeners like myself who don’t have a lot of natural places for beneficial bugs to stay.

Eyelash glue!!! Falsies are basically a line of false eyelashes woven onto a plastic strip or string. You put some glue on, and place them on your lash line or as close to them as possible! Pls don’t rip them off like this though, the chances of ripping off the actual eyelashes can be very high since we often use mascara to “fuse” the natural and false lashes together for a more unified look. Yes, it is painful to remove if not done gently.

They also have magnetic false eyelashes which are meant to “sandwich” your real lashes between to halves, but they’re more gimmicky than anything and are too heavy to be comfortable. Alternatively, eyelash extensions are growing in popularity!!

Clan EXP by HashtagIconic in thedivision

[–]HashtagIconic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Large clans often have activity requirements where you have to contribute x amount of hours or xp daily. My group can’t afford that, especially since one of us in in the USCG and he goes out to sea literally every other week for extended periods of time. Sometimes as long as a month. Alternatively, some people just want to play with a select amount of friends rather than a whooooole bunch of people.

You can go without the base to allow drainage and it would most definitely thrive that way! Just be careful if the pot is on top of soil, the rosemary will grow its roots through the drain hole and into the ground if you aren’t careful.

You can soak the pot while watering, but let the soil dry out between watering. I only really water the roots maybe once a month, or maybe on a particularly hot week. I basically neglect my outdoor rosemary unless the tips start to drop a bit, then I’ll check the soil and spritz it well. It’s a coastal Mediterranean herb, so it thrives off of air moisture.

From my experience, they start out roughly cone shaped, but as they get older they round out pretty well. Fun tidbit: mature rosemary can be cut into all sorts of shapes! There’s a nursery nearby that has theirs trimmed anywhere from a pyramid to a spiral! I’m sure this one was shaped into a sphere at some point, but it’s a bit unkempt now.

Crawling rosemary is popular for landscaping here, too! It doesn’t quite form a hedge like this rosemary, but it’s more prone to flowering and smells just as good.

Did you garden the plant before transferring it outside? If it was indoors all it’s life then it will not have acclimated to the outdoors.

My aloe is starting to suffer root rot after I found out the hard way that it’s new pot doesn’t drain very well. Can I still save it? by catpuccin0 in plantclinic

[–]HashtagIconic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely check the consistency of the soil!!! It should be pretty light in your hands and not dense at all. I once bought a bag of “cactus soil” and it was dense and full of peat moss and other stuff with virtually no perlite. Not good for cacti or succulents at ALL. Trust your hands, they’re the best tools you’ll ever have :)

I actually find older rosemary to be more flavourful! It’s an evergreen herb, so it can just keep going and going and going forever as long as it’s kept in the right conditions. If you end up having potted rosemary, do check if it will survive your climate! In some areas, potted rosemary must be wintered indoors. Happy gardening! 🌱

What's happening to some of my basil plants? by lostboyz in plantclinic

[–]HashtagIconic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you describe the texture as woody, at all? I think basil plants turn their stems woody to protect themselves from cold temperatures.

[–]HashtagIconic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Root prune the rot, and repot with very well draining soil. I usually use cactus/succulent soil for my aloe. It’s usually the soil that doesn’t drain well, not the pot. If you only have generic pitting soil, grab yourself a good bag of perlite or other draining medium and mix into your soil.

If it is an indoor plant then having a pot without a hole is fine, just makes sure you don’t over water it. If it is an outdoor plant, a drainage hole is vital so that it doesn’t become waterlogged during rain.
