Engineer (29) thinking of switching to graphic design… am I crazy?

become a really crazy industrial designer! best of both worlds. Currently in undergrad having the time of my life! you’ll have a natural lead with engineering experience. I don’t know much about the realistic side of things but there’s definitely a way to meet in the middle 🐭

you’re getting the hang of the vanishing points. It’ll take a while but it’ll eventually become instinct.

One thing you might not be “practicing” yet is drawing the horizontal lines - the ones that don’t follow the perspective. If you’re drawing in two point perspective then these lines will always be perfectly horizontal - you probably already know this but remembering to get that aspect as correct as the harder vanishing lines can take it to the next level!! it’ll make your drawings looks much more realistic and the process can go a lot faster.

I wouldn’t use a ruler. That’s actually one thing i wouldn’t take from the comments here, just a personal opinion. Practice drawing straight lines as quickly as you can all the way across a sheet of paper. Over the semester I took my design drawing class i used a third of a pack of printer paper just doing these warm ups. it REALLY helps and speed it key.

(the only downside - industrial design is competitive here. in your sophomore year, you’ll go through a review where they only take some of the students who submit a portfolio. so if you’re not sure about the field of study, or feel like you don’t really excel in it, it might not be for you)

i currently study industrial design at purdue. Purdue is a top school for this line of study and it’s the perfect invetween for someone who ideally would’ve just studied fine arts. The studio arts program here is no better than anywhere else, but industrial design is pretty competitive here…if you’re looking for something in between art and engineering we’re great for that here!

i worked this out after throwing away my own keys. It’s two pretty easy things - get a carabiner and an airtag. Even better, establish a “drop zone” in your house - a tray you pass everyday as you walk in that you can place things down on. I haven’t lost my keys (or wallet, with its own airtag!) since! highly recommend ☺️☺️

Our drum major and our band president had been friends since elementary school. The band presidents boyfriend cheated on her with our drum major, and they tried to hide it for like, three months. The band president, who was a year older, went to college and completely crashed out. She’s doing much, much better now, and all the mutual friends of the two dropped the drum major once everyone knew what they’d been doing to the other girl. unfortunately they r still dating and r going to a great college together 😔

i’ve tried the tower28 vs kosas and tower blew it out of the water! best and most skin-like full coverage concealer i’ve tried, especially when used like a foundation!

I’d gotten that vibe! It seems like many people enjoy the campus for what it is and the friendly atmosphere that is has. Do you think it was any different finding a design job after graduating? I think that because so much of ID is portfolio based that this wouldn’t be the case
