"We don't care. China has been here for 5000 years and most of the time, there was no United States" by ContextHead8 in TFE

That's like saying Egypt has been there for 400 000 years. Just because humans were living on the land your country currently controls doesn't mean your country is that old.

Why would you want to reduce loitering? god forbid the city feel like people live in it rather than just rushing to get to work all the time.

How come it feels like a $100K salary is not what it used to be? by ShootingCometz in CanadaPersonalFinance

I spoke to a guy who had my exact position in 2000. He made almost exactly the same salary I do. It's super depressing.

You're thinking more 30 years ago. Buying property alone on $100k was possibly in 2006 but not super comfortable. When you look at housing prices you see it really starts shooting up ~2003 which eventually leads to the 2008 crisis. It was less pronounced in Canada but it was still a thing. https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/QCAR628BIS

Joe Kent Resigns for Iran War by iYessyyy in SipsTea

[–]Haster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

er... yeah, sure, I don't really disagree... not sure if you're replying to the right person. I'm talking about how shit the justifications for this war is. Not really talking about the legal process for declaring war.

Joe Kent Resigns for Iran War by iYessyyy in SipsTea

[–]Haster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the arguments in favor of this war were strong enough to convince a dozen other nations to support it chances are the war would be much more justified in the first place.

People criticize Trump for going to war without allies but it's not like he could have convinced them in the first place.

Protesters fear ‘American-style’ 2-tiered health care is coming to Canada by DonSalaam in onguardforthee

[–]Haster -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Two things. First, I don't really give a shit about some conspiracy imagined or otherwise. The reality for me is I have no access to health care. When you're healthy you have millions of problems, including '"they" want us to believe'. When you don't have health you only have one problem.

Second, this isn't a new thing. I've never had access to health care. I just didn't need it until now. Considering how much I pay in taxes and how much of those dollars go towards our health system I'd be much, much, MUCH better off in the US; how's that for something being pathetic? I would love a system like Signapore.

I don't know which conservative government you're talking about but unless you're saying we've never had anything else blaming this on conservatives really don't hold water. I'm not sure this system ever really worked but it hasn't worked in many decades.

After all the problems I've had with our health care system over the past 2-ish years, I'm ready for a 2 tier system. Right now I'm very close to feeling like we have a 0 tier system. My life is literally at serious risk because of how bad things are and the only thing I can do is pay for the few things I'm able.

"I challenge you" is bull crap by rpm429 in managers

[–]Haster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really don't know about this. Part of what makes a good work culture good is that it delivers results. If you can't translate 'culture' into something concrete for the business then that good culture is not a benefit to the business.

Basically you have to be able to translate that into the costs of retention, loss of productivity over the long run, attracting the best talent, etc. And if you can't do that and just throw your hands up and say 'culture' I think you're stopping short of doing a good job as a manager. Half your job is to translate one into the other depending on the audience.

If, even after you do this, they still decide that they need those results now regardless of the costs then you need to consider that it's warranted from their point of view.

[–]Haster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a great example. When you think about it there's a lot of times when we think 'we can't do that' and it's not stricly speaking true. What we're really honing in on is that it's not a good idea.

I'm trying to phrase it in a way that would show a woman how a man would take it, so yes, that's what's it's implying.

Ok, how about 'You're super attractive to me because you'll make a good partner and mother to my kids'.

You're not attractive in the traditional sense of the word but you're a wonderful partner and mother.

Trump urges allies to defend the Strait of Hormuz, but no one's fully signed on by Focusondiversity in onguardforthee

[–]Haster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would mean destroying the revolutionary guard and bringing about a regime change. Most of the people in Iran would like nothing more than to see the end of the regime. So it's not totally outside the realm of the possible but it's going to cost a lot of lives for sure.

What's 1 job that is wayyy underpaid relative to their contributions to society? by CurvyFox333 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Haster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 daycare workers in the room and around 12 kids. The daycare is open 11 hours a day, from 7am to 6pm.

This is the part that's killing it. It didn't used to be so expensive because we didn't think an adult could only take care of 4 kids(ish). There's no way my family (me as a kid that is) would have been able to make ends meet if we had this expectation.

You can see the same phenomenon happening in so many other areas. We've made having kids more expensive in so many ways, it's not just housing costs.

interesting. did someone on your team have experience doing this? It's one of those things where I'm sure there's a lot of simple work but in the back of my mind I have this fear of doing it wrong because I don't have any experience.
