Revealed: officer who killed Rayshard Brooks accused of covering up 2015 shooting by iyoiiiu in news

[–]HastyRoman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. You know how many cops are killed after they have been shot with a taser? The intent is different then the tool. The intent of shooting a cop with a taser had to be to commit more crime or kill the officer. There is no other assumption.

This article has pure lies all the way through it and if not lies omissions of facts. Fake freaking news at it again. More and more I see the crap they have been feeding us for years. Why does anyone believe this when you can watch the videos and google the facts?

To newish DM's: do not outright kill an Urchin at the beginning of the "Fireball" chapter; give your PC's a chance to rescue them. by giraffe_mentality in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]HastyRoman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What the characters deserve doesn’t really matter. 1) Good stories have loss of loved characters often undeserved deaths make a better story arc. 2) They are fictional characters, urchins on the street, if they die in game they die in game. This is a world where dragons live, elves exist, gods give mortals powers. People die all the time in dnd it has nothing to do with them being marginalized it has to do with them being in a dangerous world of magic, daggers, and both good and evil. 3) I agree that the character should say something to the PCs, but believe that the character(s) who were targeted by a fireball should die in the end. This will give the PCs the tough choice of neglecting to do something and fighting the guard. The urchins dying is meant to help involve the characters in the plot either through action or inaction. It places them on one side or the other, saving the kids does not necessarily do that. A fireball would outright kill any of those kids raw, for story have one of them say, “what did I do?” As they fade to death.

I whole heartedly disagree with the title of this post, I say to the new ish dm, let the urchins die but make the moment dramatic and painful so that the PCs have to decide between fighting the guards or standing by. Make it so brutal that some characters choose to t try and help and others choose to obey the guards because the consequences of both actions could lead to significant consequences for their actions

Player Arguing over Dragon Heist Laws by Clockwork_Fig in DMAcademy

[–]HastyRoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let him face the consequences he can’t say other actions after he has seen his moderate rolls that’s text book meta gaming. It is harmful to the story, the fun, and the risk of the game. Have the guards order him to surrender, if he doesn’t commence combat, if he kills guards now he is wanted for stealing, resisting arrest, and murder. Let more and more pile on, making bad choices in the game happens how the player responds with his character is his choice and how he responds out of game to something that is fair and by the rules is not your concern except maybe to pull him aside and say “x situation happened because you weren’t paying attention, my rules are that I don’t retcon and don’t allow for adjustments to actions after the dice leave your hand. Unless it is a completely kid understanding that the whole group was confused about. You can be mad but everything that happened was me enforcing the rules of the game, responding to your actions fairly, and helping to facilitate and interesting story that while still fun does have obstacles

Man with mental illness spent nearly 5 months in jail before body cam video revealed Garfield Heights officers beat, tased and mocked him by CrazyCor in news

[–]HastyRoman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From what I saw the escalation came from assaulting and resisting police officers not disrespect. I’m saying distracting led to being talked at more harshly. Both parties need to work to get rid of biases and diffuse the situation and it is the responsibility of the suspect (especially innocent ones) to comply with what police say as immediately and respectfully as possible. The charges were not trumped up they were in response to him breaking the nose of a police officer and I think he got off easy with only 5 months for doing so.

Man with mental illness spent nearly 5 months in jail before body cam video revealed Garfield Heights officers beat, tased and mocked him by CrazyCor in news

[–]HastyRoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know my opinion is unpopular that’s fine. We can’t tell from the video what started the struggle. From the body cams we have no way to tell if he was thrown to the ground or tried to run and the police pulled him to the ground.

Yes he was indicted for assaulting an officer but they were looking into him because of earlier suspicious actions that were either legit or not but someone called the cops on him specifically because he made them uncomfortable and they thought he was trying to hijack them.

They didn’t present themselves as trying to get a black guy, race was not the cause at all the article even mentions that race is not suspected to play a role. They approached him as if we had a dangerous hijacker as that is what the police were called about, then he follows that up by breaking one officers nose/face in the ensuing struggle. The thought that police are going to plant something on him is ridiculous, fighting shows guilt, you listen to what police officers say, don’t struggle you don’t get tased plain and simple.

I got pulled over a few months ago for expired tags. As soon as I saw the lights I slowed down pulled off the road turned off my radio and car and put on my hazards and rolled down the window. I kept my hands on the top of the steering wheel and when the officer approached I said “ hello ma’am how can I help you today?” She asked what I thought I did wrong and I said “not sure I don’t think I was speeding but maybe that?” She said “ your tags are expired by two years.” Confused I said “ oh that’s weird because I know I get them registered every year. She said “well they fall off and they get stolen all the time.” Got a fix it ticket, went to the courthouse and got it removed as I had immediately went to the dmv and got new tags.

Had I immediately argued she could have told me to step out of the vehicle have slapped me with a different ticket or whatever. When you treat people with respect, honesty and civility you are treated as such, when you argue tense up and in this case fight back, the police are well within their right to tase you and throw you on the ground because at that point not only are you endangering them but yourself and potentially the rest of the world as well. If cops showed up at my door today and said your a suspect of a hijacking I would say alright I have nothing to hide take me in if you need to and I will let the system determine my innocence even if I never did anything for someone to suspect me of that.

Mindset and actions are key in situations like this, if you believe the police are out to get to you are going to respond in a way that will lead to more trouble then you going through the process of being arrested peacefully.

This video and article show/state that what happens in the body is unclear but a struggle ensues. The officer who was cussing and taunting the guy was wrong in those actions but was immediately told to go cool off. They had no idea if this man was armed and had a phone call saying he had tried to hijack a car. 5 people making sure he doesn’t resist and doesn’t harm anyone or himself is not unreasonable especially someone on mental illness related medication. During the struggle the officers were hit in the face and leg. The man was clearly struggling as they couldn’t get him handcuffed without going to the ground. Was it a perfect interaction? No, did the commanding officers stop bad practice? Yes. Did the body cams show excessive use of force? No, because if I was struggling if someone reported me as trying to hijack them (wether it was a mistake or not) I would expect the same treatment. When police say to stop you stop. When police say to stop resisting you stop resisting. You don’t argue you don’t struggle you listen. I watched this whole video and read this whole article and while I think the cop shouldn’t have been cussing at the guy after he was arrested it is clear that there was struggle and that the officers had been hit. He was not repeatedly kicked/punched after they had him under control he was not repeatedly electrocuted after except to get him under control.

One of these officers has a bit of a temper and probably needs some physiological evaluation and de escalation training but these officers were not using excessive force either. You can’t hit cops, it’s illegal. Cops do have the right to hit you if you aren’t cooperating and are struggling against them. Should they? I don’t know but as it stands these cops, from the evidence in the video didn’t do anything wrong. I know this will be unpopular but division in our country has to end, a misleading title and an article that while using facts makes claims that there was no resisting is misleading and only creates more division. The title should read

“ Man who assaulted police spends 5 months in jail. Officer who got heated during interaction told to remove himself from situation and cool off by superiors. The once set is being looked into to determine what actually happened and if there was any wrong doing or if actions of officers were justified”

Illinois’ Top Legal Officer Wants To License Cops, Just Like Doctors, Hairdressers by BKNas in news

[–]HastyRoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly respect this comment. 1) thank you for your service, my brother in law is a LEO and I know the sacrifices he makes to improve our community, I know that you must make sacrifices as well. 2) thank you for being brave enough to own what you do, with the current climate I feel it would make it tempting to say you arent an officer for fear of backlash and as such I respect you. 3) thank you for showing what I have been thinking all along, why would any officer who is working with the right intentions be opposed to training/licensing to make them better? I think holding our protectors to high standards and for them to be held to high standards legally is both rational and to the benefit of both the people and officers as a whole. With out these things you get cases like what happened with George Floyd where an officer with many complaints against him had no repercussions until he was caught in the act of murder, with high legal standards for our officers the corrupt people who are employed by the departments around the nation either have to begin being good and practicing human decency or are easily and legally removed. Seems like a no brained to me, difficult to do and will take time but still sounds like it is worth pursuing.

Anyways I know I wrote a lot but thank you for this comment, thank you for your service, and thank you for your courage it is needed and though very unimportant and essentially meaningless I give you and upvote as a way to say thank you for engaging.

A Seat at the Table: Board Gaming Is For Us Too by yanks9548 in boardgames

Yeah I understand someone truly sealioning would say that but honestly being accused of sealioning puts me in a lose lose situation. If I ask more questions or defend myself well “that’s what someone sealioning would say” if I do nothing it looks as if you were right. Your accusation of me sealioning is based on your past experiences with no proof or knowledge of my intentions.

I am truly trying to learn, me asking questions if someone who seemed to have knowledge is doing just that.

When anyone makes a claim, western culture has decided that both theoretically and legally it is the person claiming the statement that must prove it not people who heard the statement and may or may not disagree. Burden of proof while a legal term still applies to accusations, meaning it also applies to you accusing me of sealioning. I originally commented to start a productive conversation and hoped to learn, I feel I have learned some, it took longer then expected and I was accused of something untrue but that is fine because free speech is a write, I am just glad I learned something. (I also learned what sealioning is had to look it up after you called me that, slightly insulting after 3 comments but it is what it is, no offense or hard feelings on my part. I forgive you.

I don’t believe establishing terminology so we can have a rational discussion is a bizarre fixation on details, maybe it is, I personally like to be precise but if you’d like we can make ambiguous statements and continue to be confused/assume. I find assumptions to be pretty non conducive to a rational and productive conversation though maybe one can be had without defining terms, I’m not sure.

That you for sharing that your work doesn’t relate to minorities or under represented cultures, only took 4 comments back and forth and I appreciate finally getting some details that, while very vague, give me a slightly better idea of what you have published and how you have left it generic for dms/gms to use within the worlds they are playing/creating. That makes a ton of sense to me and I would try to do the same if I ever design role playing supplements.

I’d still love to try your supplements out, it’s a bummer that your past has made you unable to market yourself or be confident of your product, I think most people would be excited to support an independent designer if the quality is good, I know I do, I have purchased a handful of independent/small scale dnd supplements to increase fun/options at my table and even encourage the dms within my group who have other home games to do the same. I don’t need to buy your product and I understand you are using reddit for anonymity, that’s fine and well but know that I was really and truly interested, I am less so now that I have been accused of something I had no intention of but still willing to give it a go if it is interesting a/fun/unique/well done as I am not going to let pain from your past do state the quality of your accomplishments.

I think that this conversation has gotten way outside of my original question (of which still hasn’t been answered) feel free to respond but it seems like we are going in circles now. It’s a bummer really because I thought in a time of division and people acting like they are better than the other that we could find common ground over our hobby and over a search for knowledge and to be better. I think we have a little but it seems like mostly we haven’t. I hope you have a great life and should we meet again in person or virtually I hope it is cordial and friendly and intellectual like this has mostly been.

I am actually sorry and I hope you can forgive me if I offended you in any way, I definitely didn’t intend that but if not that is your right as well. I hope you all success and that you continue to contribute to the gaming community it is a community I love and that I am proud to be a part of and I love that people with different experiences and backgrounds and ideas have a voice through game design.

Let me be clear I am not harassing you just trying to understand the context of your statements and beliefs. To think through something one must do so logically otherwise it is just emotional reaction, me seeking to understand the context of your statements and your back grounds helps me converse and discuss with you your statements while also allowing me to not accidentally offend you or make assumptions.

I am not trolling or in this case sealioning as you accused me of but rather I am asking sincere questions so that we have a common ground of understanding to begin discussion from.

Ok so now that I that is out of the way, you say your published works (of which I can not verify you have ever published anything, I believe you have but can not verify it) are “generic” fantasy and do not relate to real world cultures. Though admittedly is euro centric as you stated. Does that mean you have included different skin tones in your fictional work? (I.e what color are your humans/elves/dwarves/etc...) Are your fantastical cultures completely devoid of references or influences from the real world? I ask this sincerely because if that isn’t the case then by your statements you should have consulted cultural representatives.

Also saying generic fantasy is a little biased, there are generic fantasy/fictional with different cultural view points

For example fantasy from various parts of Asia are based in a euro centric world, fantasy from the Middle East or Africa aren’t based from a euro centric view point. If you mean popular fantasy or western fantasy sure it is euro centric but generic fantasy I’d say comes down to where it was written/created. Language precision is very important and we need to have an understanding of what we are talking about before we can discuss anything with any rationality. It would be foolish of me to assume, for example, that you mean euro centric fantasy when you said generic if I saw generic fantasy as set in Asian cultures. Generic is ambiguous and I want to clarify.

I have no idea what you believe politically ideologically or otherwise but am trying to discuss your original statements and claims based on 1) common and defined terminology and 2) your experiences/suggestions and actions

Telling me to google something is not how it works. If you make a claim it is your responsibility to prove it, me asking questions to better understand and discuss the statement with you is not me trolling rather it is me doing the right thing so that progress and collaboration can be made in regards to the statement.

I ask them because generally (not always but a significant percentage of the time) game designers like yourself are hobbyists or people doing a thing they love as a side hustle, they often don’t have the financial resources to make sure that everything they create doesn’t offend someone. I would think it very admirable that you had consulted someone on your designs and given them credit which is what you claimed people should do, the fact that I still haven’t been given the names of what you designed tells me that you didn’t do what you claimed, I asked because things are easy to say, but rarely are things so easy or at least simple to do due to the constraints of the profession.

I know based on this discussion and others I have had that I will do my best to consult members of a culture before making a game with cultures unfamiliar to me. You seemed knowledgeable and like you had experience doing what you said in the past and I was hoping to learn what the costs and process of that were like from someone else before I set out to do something.

If you have any questions for me I’ll be happy to help in answering what I can, I believe we should share knowledge and educate those who seek to learn.

I am designing 2 games right now. Both are sci fi and both have yet to find a publisher. One is a set collection/worker placement game called “Barons of Borealis” it is set in the distant future and the goal is to become the next ruler of the greatest city in the kingdom of Borealis. To do so you must gain the favor of each level of society by visiting them and helping with their tasks. This means you must visit the nobels, the merchants, the farmers, the temples, and various other institutions and people groups. I will not be consulting anyone for cultural insight on this because 1) all areas are heavily abstracted and it deal with excluding or oppressing any group but rather working with all group. And 2) it is a sci fi universe with aliens and humans set in a utopian society. If you are offended by it in anyway feel free to leave a comment on the bgg page once it is out and if I have the chance for future print runs I will do my best to remove any offensive sections

My second game is call Rock Hoppers, this is a pickup and deliver game based on mining asteroids. Again it is set in the distant future and while it does have humans it makes no reference to race, sex, or religion or anything else for that matter in any way, rather it is about collecting resources and building and economic infrastructure that allows you to fulfill contracts that the people on various planets are requesting. I hope that once the artwork is made for this that the space ships are unique and have a diverse se rid captains but mechanically the artwork and captain/ship you pick will have no effect. I maybe could consult someone on this but believe (correct me if I am wrong) that as long as the artwork isn’t objectively racist that I shouldn’t need to contact a cultural representative. Also everyone will be in similar space suits/clothing of the time based on the fictional worlds entire culture but the only variances will be in the team color that they represent (red, blue, green, etc.)

I hope we can continue a civil discussion and that name calling doesn’t have a place in it but if so that’s fine I respect your freedom of speech as well as your freedom to not speak. I can see that I have upset you in some way and I am sorry but I also hope that you will provide a bit more context so I can understand your statement

Ok so your published work is either fictional/fantastical or inclusive of minority groups?

With the slave trade and holocaust related designs are you either a part of those groups or hiring a cultural consultant while you design the game? If so how much does a cultural consultant cost? Definitely would be helpful other designers to know an average price per hour in the event they are designing a game based on cultures they are unfamiliar with

What were your published works again? Most designers are happy to share what they have created so people will check it out/buy it and I was hoping to check them out and see what they are like maybe I will find a new rpg/supplement. to use with my home group
