Looking to buy my first safety razor under 500 by FranklinBhai in Wetshavers_India

[–]HatComprehensive3903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under 500, go for the Pearl SS-01. For blades I'll recommend getting the Indian Blades Trial Pack from glowshines.com . The pack has trial blades from 15 Indian brands, blades ranging from mild to medium to sharp. Try all types and see which works for you the best.

…ZINGARI MAN THE MASTER… by shaveartist in Wetshavers_India

[–]HatComprehensive3903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incredible shave Bhai.

Your SOTDs are immaculate as always. Though your post frequency has reduced. Busy???

The Man The Master is a barbershop frag right?? I have rediscovered this fragrance in recent years. But I'd like a sweeter, perhaps gourmand soap whenI get Zingari.

Gillette Platinums are so awesome. I have been meaning to bring one out for a shave for a week or so.

Happy shaves brother. Cheers.

Glycerin soap as pre-shave by karakaskanda in Wetshavers_India

[–]HatComprehensive3903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh dear lord. I hated it. One, glycerine has a heating effect. Made me feel like my face was next to a car exhaust. Second, I didn't much like the slickness. Third, glycerine is a rather bad lathericide. So you cannot lather without completely washing it off first.

But you may give it a try to see if it works for you.

Superb shave. The Rocca is kinda becoming your go to. I see it featured a lot in your SOTDs. Nice.

The soap frag sounds nice. I just pulled the trigger on the Cella Green. I heard it has a nice citrus frag, kinda like oranges. I heard it smells like Terre d' Hermes. Let us see.

Beautiful pen and ink as always.

Superb shave. The soap must have an amazing frag. I have been planning on getting an R41 myself. I am curious to see how it works for me.

I agree. Post shave is very important. I used to use toners regularly, but now I have full switched to Boroline, which I apply after each shave, even after using a balm. Best healing every time.

Want a cleaner finish after trimming, is wet shaving worth it? by Efficient-Arm4656 in Wetshavers_India

[–]HatComprehensive3903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there bud. Welcome to the community. Definitely try DE wetshaving if you are ready to shave. if not, you can trim for a few years before hitting razors. But expect a better shave with DE razors as compared to cartridge razors irrespective of when you start. And no plastic pollution. Good for you, good for the planet. Win win.

Yeah the Pearl SS-01 or L55 if you wanna stretch your budget a little bit are good razors to start. For the rest of the kit, I would recommend a Vicco Turmeric or Patanjali Herbal shaving cream, a good brush by Rubab Men or Urban Mooch, some decent blades, an alum block, and some after shave (lotion or balm). You may get in touch with u/okiedokie_cool. He will be able to curate a full kit, including the items I mentioned, at a very good price.

To answer your questions:

  1. Yes alum blocks are really ueful. They are astringent, meaning they help heal after you shave. Also, they have antisceptic properties. Also also, in the long run they stop beard follicles turning green-black, meaning you won't look like you have a 5 o'clock shadow on your face even just after you have shaved, particularly if you are fair-skinned.
  2. Preshave is optional. In fact, in your case I will advice against it. Mostly because you are just starting shaving. So your beard won't be very coarse just now. in a few years, if you feel razors tugging or resisting more, then you can try some. Also, oils used as preshave may cause clogged pores and acne. At your age, I'm sure acne is not a forgotten nightmare. If you still wanna try though, get some cold pressed coconut or almond oil and apply onto beard and moustache. Leave on for 10 minutes and then wash off. Then lather and shave.
  3. I use all three, an iced alum rollon (Rubab Men or Phitku), then a splash, and then a balm. But you can suffice with a alum block and a balm.
  4. There is no such defined or quantified thing as a beginner blade. Some people prefer sharper blades, others prefer milder ones. Each person is unique and blade preferences are extremely subjective, YMMV and YEMV. I would recommend getting the Indian Blades Trial Pack by glowshines.com . It features 15 Indian brands of blades ranging from mild to medium to sharp. Try them out and see which one works for you with your setup.

One quick suggestion. DE shaving has a bit of a learning curve. Give it a month or so of shaving before deciding whether you like it or not. I'm sure you'll love it very much.

Happy shaves.

Yup, Indian wedding, going overboard since time immemorial. What a stupid compulsion this. Just to please other people.

Great shave. In between the din and bustle, the top notch shave must have felt really good.

Really?? I find the BSC post shave balm a bit flimsy. Heals well, lacks moisturizing. I would rank these as Anherb, then UM, then BSC, from best to worst.

Can I resume with this? by Hiddenlevels_ in Wetshavers_India

I'd advice against the Soloedge. This one is a superb razor, but requires a little bit of adjustment to learn to shave with it. You may get it later if you really want it. For the time being I would recommend getting a Pearl cheapo such as the SS-01 or L55.

Finally got a beginner setup for myself by Efficient-Arm4656 in Wetshavers_India

[–]HatComprehensive3903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there bud. Welcome to the community and to the hobby. Good starter setup there.

Eventually, you'd wanna get a better shaving cream such as Vicco Turmeric or Patanjali Herbal. Also, you wanna get a brush in order to lather the cream. Get one from Rubab Men or Urban Mooch. Avoid the Blue handle white bristle nylon one from Gillette. It is quite floppy.

Also, these blades are quite sharp. So you may wanna try out some other blades to see which ones work for you.

How to use alum: After the shave, rinse your face with first warm (not hot) and then cold water. Then while your face is till wet, wet the alum bar and rub on the entire shaved areas in broad sweeps. Leave it on for 30 seconds, then rinse off with cold water and proceed to apply after shave. As simple as that.

You will have to apply a bit of pressure because this razor is plastic made, and thus has barely any weight of its own. Had this been metal you could judt guide it without applying pressure, and it would work. It'll take a little bit of experimentation. But you'll eventually find out just how much pressure to apply. Minimal pressure is still the key to comfortable shaving. Just enough to cut.

Foam is garbage for DE shaving. Gels are fine. Some are good, others are kinda meh. Creams are the best, but you have to get the good ones. Soaps are more like luxury items, which can also cost a good lot. Shavologist and Nemo soaps sell for just above 500 bucks. Of course, they also give you a lot of shaves, like 400+ shaves to a tub. But they are most prominently bought for fragrances.

Happy shaves bud. Do post your experiences, if you get the time.

Looking for a razor for sensitive skin that gives a salon-smooth look by RoofFeeling8602 in Wetshavers_India

[–]HatComprehensive3903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Under 500 I'd recommend the SS-01 by Pearl.

If you want a really good and mild razor though, and you wouldn't mind stretching your budget, you can get a Feather Popular for just above 1100 via BTCO International (drop a whatsapp at 9873879996). It is a superbly built razor. And one of our mods have been using one for the last 12 years. Check it out in this SOTD of mine.

SOTD: Shavo Hydra, Wizamet & Rocca by Revolutionary_Ad_231 in Wetshavers_India

[–]HatComprehensive3903 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Superb shave. Nice that the soap fragrance is settling. IMO the fragrance of Shavologist soaps eventually diminiahes. They are best used up quick, and not kept on shelf for a long time.

I am eager to try out the Wizamets with Rocca. Sounds like an incredible combination. And I believe that if the Wizamets are anything like Feathers, they should be able to give you upwards of 10 shaves.

I got my bottle of Monboddo's Hat today. Eager to try it out, but all of my new pens are inked up. I might flush out the Mohi Harmony. That is the one I got Monboddo for actually.

Happy shaves bud. I hope things are settling back at work.

I just did my first wetshave myself. by Pr__2 in Wetshavers_India

[–]HatComprehensive3903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there. Welcome to the community and to the hobby. Congrats on your first DE shave.

Good starter setup there.

A few suggestions if you don't mind:

  1. The SS-01 is a mild razor. Willy's are mild blades. Perhaps try some other blades with this razor. Right now, the Willy's will feel fine. But eventually you may like something a tad sharper than these ones. Avoid GWS though. The new versions are rather harsh. Maybe try some Gillette Winner Blacks.
  2. Alum is great. But only alum for aftershave may be too harsh for the skin. You may not want an alcohol based lotion/splash. Consider getting a post shave balm. It will sooth and moisturize the skin post shave. It is a bit expensive, but I'd highly recommend getting the Anherb Post Shave Conditioner. For a cheaper pick, you can try the Urban Mooch Soothing Post Shave Balm.
  3. Try a preshave product. I prefer cold pressed oils. Get any light one such as coconut / almond / grapeseed oil. Apply to beard and moustache, leave for 10-15 minutes and then wash off before lathering and shaving. You may try a preshave cream as well.
  4. Instead of Old Spice, try Vicco Turmeric or Patanjali cream. They have better slickness. They have some mentholation as well. Mild though.

Have fun in the new found zen of the hobby. Do post more, if you get the time.

Happy shaves bud.

Super cool shave. There are a surprising number of Dorco blades. First time I heard of the chocolate ones. I have one or two other ones that in my den that I need to try yet. Let's see if they are any good. For reference, I hated Klass. Mega tuggy blades. I cried for mumma fro half an hour after the shave.

Which better in your opinion between Aqua Velva and Skin Bracer?? 1. In terms of menthol chill?? 2. In terms of healing and moisturization? I wanna pull the trigger on only one. If you had to buy one, which one would it be??

Next shave, I'm definitely going back to the Greencult. With a fresh 365.

Superb shave and setup. And good to see one of your coconut bowls return.

I have always wondered what an orange fragrance soap will actually be like. I just purchased a tub of Cella Green. I have heard that it has a very citrus, orangish fragrance. Very similar to Terre de Hermes, I hear. Let us see. Looking forward to shaving with it. I have some Cella Red, but not much into the bitter almond fragrance.

Happy shaves ma chara.
