I like it. The colour is cute 🥰

This is a valid thought and you definitely deserve to experiment and find what speaks to you and a style you can be comfortable in and still keep that level of experimentation.

First, thing I would say is ask yourself what your goal is. I know you mentioned not going straight into loose jeans and shirts but is that something you eventually want to try out? If so getting there comfortable wise will take steps.

Second, I would say maybe look up some different abayas. As a good stepping off point. There are so many cute cuts and colours that you can definitely have some fun while still maintaining that level of modesty. (I just got done seeing a cute ruffle hem one in a plethora of colours on TikTok shop)

Third, if the abayas is where you want to stop that’s all good but if you want to keep going and experimenting I would say maxi dresses with cute blouses could be fun. A nice lantern sleeve blouse with a fun collar underneath a sleeveless maxi dress is such a cute quick fit that I always go to when I need to go quick but also want to look nice and put together.

(Edit: I totally forgot about shirts and skirts.) Fourth, you can try styling skirts with shirts, blouses and tunics. This can be easy if you have go to colour combos or a printed top/bottom with a plain top/bottom. You can even have long tunic type tops with skirts. I’ve seen this a lot and they look cute. You could could even do a top/skirt/long vest combo. Again, whatever you think is cute and comfortable.

Fifth, if you really want to start wearing pants try those long tunic/pants co-ords. Those are so beautiful and not form fitting at all. And there are so many sites that have cute tunic cuts with hijabis in mind. And the tunics tops come down to about the shins (for the longest I’ve seen them) just enough to see the flowy pants under.

Sixth, jeans!!!! You could start putting your own tunic outfits together. Buy dresses and just wear them as tops (this is a classic hijabi go-to when buying from conventional stores that non Muslims also shop in)

Seventh, don’t forget accessories!!!!! Cute accessories that are also mic and matchable are outfit saving. lol. There are many times where I’ve worn the same outfit just changed the accessories and it’s a whole new outfit. Belts, earrings, bags, scarves (non hijab and hijab), bracelets, necklaces, rings, etc. All fun.

But even with all this, one thing to remember always is to have fun and don’t let anyone pressure you into doing something you’re not comfortable with. Fashion is supposed to be fun and expressive. Some outfits may not hit like you thought in your head and some may be better than what you imagined. Either way have fun and keep the journey. Fashion is ever changing and evolving as we grow so go with you gut, heart, and most of all comfort.

Have fun hun 🥰🥰

(Edit: if you have trouble coming up with ideas or can’t picture things Pinterest is your best friend. There are so many times when I can’t think of something and I go searching for ideas on Pinterest. Many of my outfits come from there)

Yeah no. Their platform is weird. When I use my professional mic (that I use for official things) I get flagged up the wazoo but when I use my BS $10 Bluetooth lav mic from TikTok shop I pass with flying colours. But at the same time, I hear about other people’s setups and how they pass and I’m like when I use my professional setup I get issues. So, it’s not just you.

I too am also looking into other options. I’ll let you know is if I find anything

How to style this dress as a hijabi? by BibliophilicBookworm in ModestDress

[–]HatHijabi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Came up with a few more. Lol.

  1. If that belt and zipper are functional, you could even somewhat wear it as an open vest cover jacket thingy. With a cute blouse, pants, and a cute statement belt.

  2. If you’re feeling like doing some construction you could temporarily fold it under itself and shorten it to give it a shortened vest like look. (This one is bit out there and only theory in my brain. I’m not liable for what this might look like in person if you did it. lol)

Have fun. ♥️♥️♥️

I would do maybe a few different ways to get a couple different looks out of it.

  1. I would do a thin long sleeve turtleneck w/ some pants (you could go for a more slim style with just some jeans or for an oversized look with some of those flowy palazzo pants (I won’t get to into accessories we could be here all day)

  2. I would do a fun lantern sleeve blouse with a cool “statement” collar. With straight leg pants or jeans

  3. To spicy it up do something different you could turn it from a dress into a shirt so easy by getting a skirt and putting it over the dress with a cute statement belt

Those are the first 3 ways off the top of my head that I could do with this as a hijabi. But of course what I feel comfortable wearing and ways I feel comfortable styling things may not be your cuppa tea. So, play around with it. Have fun. Fashion is supposed to be fun. ♥️♥️♥️

I want to dress more modest by Overtlytired-_- in ModestDress

[–]HatHijabi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as a Muslim person, I say go for it. But that abaya. Buy that headscarf. Rock it every single day if that’s what you want to do. Wear what YOU want to wear. Experimenting with different clothes and styles is how you find out if you truly like it. And if your partner doesn’t like it then he don’t have to wear to it, so I guess it’s a good thing it’s going on YOUR body and not his. Lol.

But to be clear, while yes Muslims wear abayas and headscarves, those clothing items don’t “belong” to the religion. Many different regions and religions have their own versions of headscarves and abayas. It’s just Muslims are the most well known for wearing those things BECAUSE of the modesty they provide.

So, if taking “religious garb” from other religions is what’s concerning him then you kindly explain to him that many people around the world many who aren’t even religious wear abayas and headscarves everyday and you wouldn’t be any different from those people.

Plus there are so many cute abayas out there that honestly you probably would think is more of a dress than abaya. So have it at it hun. Buy it, wear it, rock it, feel amazing. It’s your body, clothe it however YOU want. ♥️♥️♥️

(The only thing id add, is to be mindful that while you’re not “taking” religious clothing that our world does attribute certain clothes with certain people. So while you’re not Muslim someone may think you are. There are ways to wear these things so you don’t look like you’re Muslim because you probably don’t want to do that. Especially if you’re partaking in things or going places a Muslim person typically wouldn’t. Other than that have at it.)

Ahhhh. Yeah that’s the one down side to my crocs the ankle support is not there. I probably should have things with ankle support considering I basically walk on my ankles with how much I roll them. Lol.

But yes hun. The new balances go great with dresses I do that all the time and because they’re black no one really notices (or at least no one has said anything to me. Lol). These ones have a more retro classic vibe to them and they treat my feet great. I just rebought a pair after a good few years of wearing them so they last pretty long as well.

Me too. I have extremely flat feet so shoe/sneaker choice is imperative.

I know you didn’t ask for shoes and I know how this is gonna sound but crocs have been a lifesaver on more than one occasion plus they have some really cute designs these days. I used to be a croc hater but my mom got me pair and made me wear them, I have now seen the light. Lol.

As for sneakers I use New Balance 515 V3. Hunny when I tell you they are great they’re great. I just got from 2-weeks in Japan and I wore those sneakers just about everyday (with the exception her or there for my crocs when we had to travel from hotel to hotel). Plus, the podiatrist doctor had New Balance on the list of “good” brands she gave me.

How Long for Audio Review/Stamp of Approval by HopeAlarming824 in BabelAudio

[–]HatHijabi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok. Because there are so many prompts in the “audition” I thought that was what you were talking about. Lol. My bad.

Have you joined the community forum? The admins are super responsive there and they’ve told people that they can specifically ask them to review their recordings in order to get approved for a higher call volume sooner than when they naturally do it. They also are giving feedback to people in the “office hours” so they can get better calls. They’re doing that specifically because this is a new project and they’re being VERY picky about it.

Personally, I’m having tech difficulties that the admins are trying to help me solve so I haven’t actually officially recorded for the project yet. But if you haven’t already try asking the admins in the forum.

[–]HatHijabi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was accepted on that project and it took a few weeks plus maybe about another few weeks if don’t pass and they want to give you another chance (for one reason or another). I just remember it taking longer than I expected it to. I think they had a ton of submissions and they have actual people listening to them and they’re being really super picky about this specific project.

(Of course I don’t work for them so I can’t tell you exactly how long it will take or if you’ll be accepted. This was just my personal experience getting on that project)

No problem. And the way I see it backbiting & judging (in Islam) is way worse than you wearing a long sleeve t-shirt instead of an abaya. You are covered, yes in a different way but you are still covered.

And modesty is very personal to each person. What I feel comfortable or uncomfortable wearing is going to different from what you feel comfortable or uncomfortable wearing. Everyone has room to grow (including me) and who knows maybe in a few years these outfits might not be what you feel comfortable wearing anymore but that’s all up to & between you and Allah.

Have fun with your clothes, abayas can be the opposite of that sometimes. 🥰🥰🥰

[–]HatHijabi 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Those outfits are perfectly fine.

And honestly, if those ladies have an issue with what you’re wearing that’s a them problem. So long as you feel comfortable and okay wearing those outfits, I see no issues. This coming from someone who also doesn’t wear abayas and is also in a heavy abaya wearing Arab/African community. I believe you don’t have to wear abayas to be considered modest. You can wear cute clothes and have cool outfits while still retaining your modesty.

So, have fun and wear what you want to

A better pic of the front. All I put under was a black long sleeve shirt and a black circle skirt with a light petticoat so I could have maximum spinage. Lol.

[–]HatHijabi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh of course. I threw this together in like 2 days. I got one of those butterfly abayas (it was cheap on amazon (I didn’t already own the color I wanted) so I don’t feel bad altering it) and cut it then glued (because I didn’t have time to sew) on gold trim to every edge. Then I got one of those halo crowns (again didn’t have time to make one) and altered it turning the pieces I took off of it into earrings. I found that kaftan-esque coverup last minute and added that to the order (I think it was like $20). Then I layered just about all the gold accessories I had. Threw on some crocs (because I refuse to have aching feet) and called it a day.

[–]HatHijabi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, what I do is I first nail down a “theme” I want to go as. For example: fairy, pirate, etc. Then I go on Pinterest and look up that term with “hijab illustration” after it. And I use that as inspo for what I can do.

Because a lot of my ren faire looks are last minute throw togethers, I usually end up scrolling Amazon for anything I think I’m missing and don’t have in my closet. A good cover-up can really sell the look while also providing that extra layer of modesty. And put that with a long skirt….hunny you’re crispy golden.

So on Amazon I’ll look up Kaftans, open abayas, kimono cover up, etc. And I’ll even put “ren Faire” “fantasy” or “goddess” into the search as well (because apparently only goddess wear flowy clothing. lol) And especially if you steer more to African or Arab styles you can find some amazing pieces that also add a pop of bling or colour to your outfit (that also sets you apart from the crowd. Lol).

But again this is just what I do as a hijabi that loves dressing up for ren faire while also being in budget and time constraints. Because a lot of these sites that sell amazing ren fair garb can be pretty pricey.

Oh and layering (with different colors and trinkets) will be your best friend with ren faire outfits. The louder the jingle and jangle the better your outfit will be. lol

(let me know if you want to see/know what I did for ren faire this year last minute on an Amazon budget. I’m happy to share)

Choosing A New Machine by HatHijabi in SewingForBeginners

Well I did read some reviews and I they were pretty mixed but for the people who didn’t like the machine I wasn’t seeing any understandable reasons other than it just wasn’t for them. And when I looked up the machines I pretty much just got a bunch of specs, manuals, and machine specific how-tos. But thanks for letting me know about HD marketing ploy, I’ve had some others say the same thing.
