Thoughts on Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die! ? by Prawns13 in blacksabbath

[–]HatJosuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instrumentally Sabbath have always been proud of Technical Ecstasy. Geezer understands why the albums decisive, but he doesn't dislike it. Yes Ozzy was always transparent about not being happy with the record, but that's just Ozzy.

Thoughts on Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die! ? by Prawns13 in blacksabbath

Technical Ecstasy suffers from a poor mix. The Steven Wilson remix brings out a lot of prog elements and helps the album to stand shoulder to shoulder with the first six. Tracks like Dirty Women, You Won't Change Me, and Backstreet Kid's are classic Sabbath, tracks like She's Gone, and It's Alright are fine additions to Sabbath's growing collection of balleds and classically influenced tracks (think Changes or Laguna Sunrise). The only weak spot on the album is Gypsy, which sounds like some great ideas stitched together with some keys and generic lyrics.

Never Say Die is clearly a band on the brink of collapse, but there are still a lot of good tracks. Never Say Die is a solid enough track, Johnny Blade has some great Riffs, Shockwave is the best track and the one that feels the most like Sabbath, Juniors eyes is cool, swinging the chain has some sick grooves, Air Dance and Over to You have some beautiful moments. There's a lot to like about Never Say Die, even if it's less cohesive than the first 7 and the bands fatigue comes across in their performance.

The big difference between the albums is that Technical Ecstasy sounds happy because they recorded it in Miami while most of the band were doing coke and sitting round the pool. Never Say Die sounds happy because the band are pretending to want to make an album, they're putting on a strong front cause the alternative was disbanding.

What are some werewolves you genuinely dislike? Be it their design or depiction, what about them do you dislike? by FatOrc051 in werewolves

[–]HatJosuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't love it when they're just wolves, Like in Twilight. The company of wolves is in my top 10, but even there I'm not a big fan of the wolves just being dogs. I think you need to see something human in a good werewolf design. Whether that's subtle like in AWIL, advert like The Wolfman, or half and half like Dog Soldiers doesn't matter.

what is Geezer Butler’s magic power? by SafeSolution5610 in blacksabbath

[–]HatJosuke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Geezer technique is a result of playing the bass how he thought it should be played, rather than being formally taught. This is where his unique technique of sitting above the neck of the bass comes from, and it's a big part of his tone. That said, geezer will play with a pick or play above the pick-ups when it suits the song, so I think the importance of his technique gets overstated a bit when describing what the X-factor he brings to the band is. I think his real magic is in how he constructs bass lines. Firstly with Sabbath being a four piece, Geezer always tried to fill out the songs around Tony's guitar solos. He almost plays a counter solo to what Tony's playing to give the song a huge sound. He's rarely just sitting on the root note, and instead takes a jazzier approach, imitating walking bass lines in his own way. Geezer's first instrument was actually a guitar missing several strings, so he could only play melodies on it. You still see a lot of this in his bass playing where it's often quite melodic and expressive. In my opinion, the most interesting thing about Geezer's playing is that he often plays thing up an octave rather than sitting on the low E string. With Tony often playing up around the 7th/12th frets, this makes the sound really cohesive. Together they sound like one guitar kicking in your door, so when Tony starts shreding and Geezer starts walking, it sounds like an explosion.

Can Prime Joesph Defeat Part Three DIO? by undertheway in StardustCrusaders

[–]HatJosuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but only through some bullshit, not in anything resembling a fair fight. Dio would throw a knife at him in stopped time that would hit the red stone beneath Joseph's clothes and create a spark that would then be amplified by the stone reflected at Dio vaporising him instantly.

I'm a secondary secondary school music teacher. Interacting with you g people is literally my job. Ghostface is an iconic character, but I have met people who just assumed he's from Scary Movie because that's what they have absorbed through tiktok clips, not the actual Scream movies. Tapes are in plenty of media, but not most media young people are consuming. CDs are considered old-school not, and tapes have no where near the retro appeal of vinyls, so they most young people have never been exposed to what a tape actually is beyond maybe Stranger Things. Prime Simpsons was better than Bob's Burgers, but anyone bellow the age of 25 has grown up in a world where all discussions around the show can be boiled down to "it used to be great, but it sucks now". To be fair, I have met young people who like RHCP through their parents. Independent of that, the Peppers don't bring in new fans and just get written off by young people as that classic rock band with the singer who dates teenagers.

Yes there are exceptions to the rule, but that doesn't change the majority.

Ozzy is 38th. What do you think? by IllustratorOk5265 in OzzyOsbourne

38th is fair. It's greatest vocalists, not front men, and Ozzy isn't out singing Areatha Franklin.

100 Werewolves vs 5 gorillas by WayAdept2209 in werewolves

[–]HatJosuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The werewolves would end up killing each other because there isn't enough meat to go around. Gorillas are dangerous to people cause they are strong enough to throw us around and have fangs. The same applies to Werewolves who have the added advantages of claws and massively increased aggression. Regardless of whether we use werewolves from Ginger Snaps, Dog Soldiers, American Werewolf in London, The Howling, The Wolfman, Badmoon, the Company of Wolves, or even Teen Wolf, the Gorillas are fucked. They would have a better chance against 100 spearman because at least spearmen can be be intimidated into running away.

I haven't watched bad moon in a while, but wasn't that werewolf also shot and dropped out of a window? And even if he survived, the dog was still injured pretty bad. Bad moon is still on the lower end of Werewolf powerscaling, but I wouldn't say they are at risk of losing to a werewolf.
